😒 3/5 - Below expectations and poor value for money

Me and my fiancée visited Monzu for our engagement dinner. We had high hopes due to the Michelin star and the occasion. We appreciate good food and have been to many restaurants with Guide Michelin stars in different cities such as Paris, Tokyo, San Sebastian etc. Capri is expensive and this restaurant even more. We don’t mind paying for excellent experiences but this visit didn’t impress us unfortunately. We ordered the 4 course tasting menu (€140) and wine pairing (€60)
Good things:
- Quick (but almost forced) service
- Excellent Chef’s Welcome
- Desert and pre-desert was excellent and tasty
Below expectations:
- The starter (cuttlefish) was well prepared (marinated in thin slices) but quite tasteless. Most of the plate was cuttlefish and nothing really to contrast it with. I expected more different tastes on the palette
- the primi was blue mussels with pasta. Well presented and the sauce was good. Mussels were…mussels.
- Secondi was monkfish (high expectations) bbq style but was overcooked
- Service asked “Everything ok?” when they rushed to get our plates, not really taking the time to get feedback.
- Wine pairing was poor value. €60 for wine pairing, then we expected good and reasonable amounts of wine. We had 4 glasses, all very small (less than 10 cl, more around 6-8 cl). Wine was ok but after spending €120 on wine we expected more. In Capri a decent bottle of wine is €30-60. We should have invested those €120 in a good bottle instead
Conclusion: poor value for money if you expect a 1 star Michelin experience…Proofpoint: bottle of still water was €18… Prices charged were high enough not to overcharge on water.
