Ever since I was young I remember people telling me that one of the best restaurants in Toronto was Sotto Sotto. I have now come to realize that those people know nothing about food. Sotto Sotto is a pedestrian Italian restaurant that survives on reputation but not quality. Thoughts that this place should get a Michelin star are downright laughable. First the service. Which is required to get to 2 or 3 stars. There really wasn't much. When asked for recommendations our waiter gave passing answers that were variations of "I'm not you so I dont know what to tell you." Our waiter was much more preoccupied with tending to the larger party table next door than either of his other two tables which included ours. This included the standard birthday dessert and song for that larger table (more on that later). For the food, which is the minimum to get 1 star. It was all very average. Nothing was bad. But nothing was good. Best was the calamari because when you fry something it's hard to screw up. The carpaccio was basic and presentation kind of bad with the dollops of sauce on the meat. The meatballs were average. No big deal. The ones I get from the airport restaurant in Toronto are better. For mains we had the bolognese (average), mushroom risotto (ok but over priced and too chewy) and the veal Limone (small portion). We ordered a lot for two people and had two of their more expensive wines by the glass as well. You'd think the service would reflect that. The waiter was MIA for most of the dinner and both our table and the table next door were sitting for very long periods of time to get our dishes cleared and bill brought to us. The kicker for me? I had informed the restaurant that it was my birthday through Amex concierge and when I called to change my time. They knew it was my birthday. They did nothing for me. Recall I mentioned they sang and gave a free dessert to the larger table I referenced earlier. This place is supremely overrated. I won't be back. It's an average Italian restaurant masquerading as a good one because some celebrities that don't have taste like to go there. If you want a good meal go somewhere else. I won't be back. There are much better options in the city than this souped up East Side Mario's.
