Incredibly bad air quality inside the restaurant
Food was ok, but…. The air quality inside was terrible, yo are literally getting dizzy sitting there. I sincerely hope I haven’t caught anything that evening. So definitely no go for me, what’s pity because the food was quit good, although a bit overpriced.
Be the first to ReplyPoor Sushi. Sadly
We had one night in Zurich and as a sushi fan chose this restaurant for dinner. Sadly very disappointed in the sushi offering. All the maki rolls we had were poor. I blame the rice which to my mind was badly prepared and soft mushy and lacking structure. Hence all the rolls were mushy and poor. So sadly I don’t recommend this restaurant if you are keen on your sushi.
Be the first to ReplySuper expensive – subpar service
We were looking very much forward to our visit of “Sala of Tokyo”, the expectations were high, and unfortunately not met. While the food was delicious, the service was not up to the standard. It’s easy to spend 250 Francs (35’500 JPY) per Person here with little alcohol, but the whole dinner is served like being at “Mister Wong”: obviously the staff had no formal training, pouring too much soy sauce, serving from the wrong side, unsure what’s on the plate (“some Japanese vegetable”), unfamiliar with basic Japanese terms for food, alcohol, or chopsticks. Seems like the place exploits its former glory. Pity, we shall not return.
Be the first to ReplyWOW !
Good service, nice atmosphere and EXCELLENT FOOD. We had the Edimame, Miso soup and Tempura Shrimp and Vegetables The finest Japanese food I have had in years. I am anxious to return on my next visit to Zurich
Be the first to ReplyNot recommend. Service : uncomfortable Quality of foods : not special as Japanese quisine.
Sala of Attitude
I have visited Sala of Tokyo many times over a couple of decades now. It has been an institution in Zürich if you are into Japanese food. It looks like owner and manager have changed drastically in recent days as my recent visits leave me with no option but to lave this review so that I hope this new owner / management can come to its senses and the prospective visitors should be aware of its real state as of today rather than before.
Firstly we are in Switzerland so if you have ever been to Japan or even other big cities like New York or London, then please don’t put your hopes up too much since they have different standard (and price!) as far as Japanese food and it’s ingredients are concerned. Chefs are from Japan and they all seem seasoned. Staffs seems to be all locals or expats rather than Japanese as they often didn’t understand when I spoke to them some items in original Japanese words. Overall it feels like authentic japanese restaurant run by locals, as are the cases with many japanese restaurants in Europe nowadays.
Fish is good but the portion and quality is where they really miss the beat, especially given its price. You will have a CHF25 salad which is served in an extremely small bowl that can be finished in 10 seconds. Sushi had good fish but I was surprised that they were made with rice that was not even cooked properly. Restaurant was full and very busy when I visited so services wereslow and I had to wait for an hour for some dishes to arrive. Staffs do their best but they forget things and general atmosphere is somewhat chaotic. Kitchen seems to be in full gear as they seemed to be full with orders. Chefs made my dish (sushi) but it sits there for almost an hour (as I could see in plain view) which staff finally decides to deliver upon my complaint. They neither apologize for their mistake nor listen to my complaint about it being not fresh enough as it was sitting for almost 1 hour after being prepared. You either take it or leave it - this is sort of their attitude in general. I ask the manager to make it again as it’s clearly their mistake not delivering it on time - manager reluctantly accepts my requests, chefs complain some obnoxious words in Japanese which I tragically understand.
On another visit, I visit without reservation as I see empty tables on the outside pavement of the restaurant. 5 tables are available but the manager insist that they are fully reserved. He also refuses to take any take-away order as they are very busy. We visit the nearby restaurant for dinner over two hours, with clear views of these 5 tables - these 5 tables which remain very empty throughout these two hours. Upon my inquiry as I leave the area, a staff insist that they were fully reserved for two hours though empty - from 7 to 9pm while the kitchen closes at 9:30pm. Running business, generating revenue, and maybe fulfilling guest experiences are not important to them it seems, but having reservations seems to be extremely important. Whether these guests turn up or not is another matter to them perhaps.
Sala of Tokyo, as of today, is an institution that is immature, arrogant and unwelcoming in every sense. Quality of its dishes is dismal when you compare it with comparatively priced Japanese restaurants in London or New York. Worst of all, it takes its history and status as granted rather than improvising. Above two instances that happened in the month of September as I describe above perhaps paints the picture better than anything else.
Biggest tragedy is that this restaurant is actually in full swing and people are willing to pay CHF300+ for dinner of two eating such mediocre food and receive dismal service, just because there isn’t much of alternative as far as Japanese food is concerned in the city centre of Zürich. The fact that Michelin guide is willing to recommend this institution in their list also make you wonder about their method.
If you have a deep pocket, take a flight to London and have a real quality Japanese food. If not, Yooji down the road will offer you better and cheaper maki, without any salt of attitude.
Still the best Japanese restaurant in Zurich
We used to go to this Japanese restaurant in Zurich at their old address for many years.
They moved to the Schützengasse next to the Zurich main station two years ago. We have decided to try it again end June this year.
We had dinner there. They changed their menu, and do not have set menus anymore. We asked for advice and we ordered many new dishes to try and it ended up that we liked them all. Portions are generous and the presentations always elegant.
The owner Lorenz is a young man who is passionate about his work.
The staff are all very friendly and the food is just authentic and delicious.
We highly recommend this restaurant. It definitely remains the best Japanese restaurant in Zürich!
