VALENTINE'S DAY DINNERI'll start off with the main quip about why I'm giving San Lorenzo just 2 stars: I booked a Valentine's Day dinner here for me and my girlfriend 3 weeks in advance. Two nights before (the night of the SuperBowl, so I didn't see until the following morning), San Lorenzo called me to let me know that they would not be doing a la carte and would ONLY be doing a $125 prix-fixe menu for Valentine's Day. My girlfriend and I were both shocked, but because we didn't learn about this until the day before Valentine's Day, we struggled to find any alternatives. If San Lorenzo had just posted this with sufficient advanced notice OR provided the option for an a la carte menu, I think this review would have been bumped to 3- or 4-stars.The total bill for everything, including tip, tax, and transportation fee(?), was ~$330. That's a pretty hefty price tag in my book, especially when comparing San Lorenzo to other D.C. restaurants I've been to with similar tabs.THE FOODThe food was solid overall. Four courses, not including bread. Unfortunately, the menu was a "surprise" since it was prix-fixe and we were instructed to just give the waiter our dietary restrictions. - 1st Course: We have no idea what the first course was since the waiter tried to explain the first course, but we couldn't understand him. - 1.5th Course: Bread and garlic olive oil for dipping. Pretty average overall.- 2nd Course: The second course was heart-shaped ravioli, which was the best course by far and nicely themed. - 3rd Course: The third course seemed to be a steak with sauce dish and a fish steak dish, but the waiter never came over to explain the third course, so we don't actually know what it was we ate. My girlfriend hated the fish steak because it didn't seem to have any seasoning or sauce associated with it (barring the lemon that was next to it). She mostly just ate the side of spinach. FWIW, I also heard the table next to us complaining a lot about their main dish, but I'm not sure exactly what they ordered.- 4th Course: The fourth course was tiramisu and a heart-shaped chocolate cake. My girlfriend loved the tiramisu and I thought the chocolate cake, albeit light in flavor, won points for being on brand.THE DRINKSThe waiter gave us complimentary glasses of wine as part of the prix-fixe. One rose and one prosecco. The rose was surprisingly bitter, so we barely finished it. The prosecco was good. We were offered more wine, but it was unclear if all the wine was complimentary in the price, or just the first glass, so we declined.THE SERVICEThe service was solid overall. The waiter and staff were nice and kudos to them for working a holiday like Valentine's Day. Our waiter dragged his feet a bit towards the end (after the 2nd course), so the dinner ended up being a little over 2.5 hours. But the restaurant did provide my girlfriend with a complimentary rose which was a really nice touch. At the end of the day, our frustration and it seemed like other patrons' frustrations stemmed from the limited choice, limited notice, and limited menu. That, coupled with a hefty price tag, are easy enough fixes in my mind, so hopefully we can visit again in the future under different circumstances.
