Sushi is great, we come here often.
But they now sneak an automatic 20% service charge onto the bill, and then ask you to choose an extra tip on top of it after paying. You can choose "no tip" but still they make you do that in front of the waiter. The waiter also didn't say anything about the 20% service charge. I can assume many people pay the service charge, and then tip another 15-20% on top unknowingly. Very bad business practice and feels scammy!!

As someone who grew up in Hawaii and frequented Japan, this is some of the best sushi I've tasted in SF

Food was good, but felt cheated because 20% gratuity included in subtotal. Shouldn't gratuity be added in after subtotal and not be part of tax calculation!! :(
Be the first to ReplyThe food was good and the place was small and cozy.
The service was horrible though. We just sat and the waitress kept staring constantly waiting for us to order within 2 minutes into the restaurant,we felt really rushed. This was when we ordered over $200 worth of food. It was really uncomfortable to eat while them staring and interrupting that if we wanted to order something else so we just took our food and sake to go.

Having omakase at saru is really worth it! I started with 12pcs nigiri and added on more. Luckily i came when they were not busy so i got sat right away! Siting at the bar is the real deal for having omakase because you got it hand-to-hand from chef. Travor is really great chef. Every bites are really tasty. My favorites so far are sawara, shima aji, chu toro, kinmedai, masaba, and engawa. Nama hotate is the BEST which really blown me out! I like how fish are really fresh and traditional. Not fancy, but tasty itself. Service is good too. I like how small the restaurant is, but they dont take reservation that would be the cons side if they get really busy. I'll be back for sure. Really good sushi in town!

Food: 5/5 Salmon Tasting: 5/5 Great selection of fatty and lean salmon. Our favorites were the king salmon and the soy sauce salmon. Sashimi Tasting: 5/5 Fish was fresh and delicious! Hamachi Truffle: 5/5 Service: 3/5 I'm not sure if it was an off night but my party of 4 felt rushed by the server. They also came back to our table several times to ask if we wanted to order more food. I think this is totally fine if you see that we're just about done with our meal, but it feels pushy if we haven't even started eating and if you come back to ask the same thing multiple times even though we politely decline each time. Ambiance: 4/5 I've never eaten inside the restaurant but the outdoor seating has overhead patio heaters that kept us warm on a chilly Noe Valley winter evening. I did feel like the table and chairs were a bit cramped though.
Be the first to ReplyThe space is cute but the food was somewhat disappointing.
The hand rolls were nothing special. Some of the rolls were good but somewhat small, just as the nigiris.

Getting a table can be difficult as they're open for such limited hours and their space is quite small but it's my favorite sushi spot when I'm looking for an elevated experience

Gorgeous little spot - felt just like a spot in Tokyo, sat at counter to watch the masters at work, every dish produced a work of art. Sashimi melt in the mouth. Didn't have to wait too long cute plant store across from the place pleasant way to spend the wait time at - definitely will be back!

I won't usually give something 5 stars, but this place is about as good as you can get for a cheaper omakase. The fish is super fresh and flavorful and the price is reasonable. The shari is also well-cooked, with each grain of rice being separated without it clumping.
Be the first to ReplyThe meal was delicious.
I sat at the counter and watched the chef meticulously focus on preparing each dish with care. He knew table orders and tables they belonged to better than the servers who put the orders in. However, the service needs some work. We felt rushed to place our order and were rushed through the entire process of eating. At the very end a waitress told us to hurry because another party is waiting, forgetting my party had just stood in line too and spent several hundred dollars to dine at the restaurant. To me this kind of service warrants a 2 star rating. Just left a bad taste in my mouth.

Sad to say my visit back to Saru after a couple years was more than disappointing for many reasons. Tldr: for how absolutely expensive this place is and what you get in terms of food, atmosphere and service, you might as well just go somewhere nice like Kusakabe for almost the same price and actually be full and satisfied.Pros: each nigiri was perfectly seasoned and did not need any soy sauce Cons: - no reservations: we got there just before opening and waited for about 40 min to be seated. The smell on the corner is horrific.- nigiri as so tiny and small. You will need at least 12-15 pieces plus appetizers and sides to be somewhat satisfied - freezing cold outside. Asked the staff if they can move the heater a bit closer and was told no and that we need to share the heater.- insanely expensive: bill for 2 people was over $300 after mandate, taxes and tip, and I wasn't even full. (note: we only had 1 small sake so it's not alcohol)

Can't believe we have been living here for 2 years and haven't gotten the chance to sit down at Saru until tonight. This was such an unbelievable experience I had to post a review the same evening. My fiancรฉ and I did the 12-piece Omakase and it was absolutely delicious. Our host/server was so sweet and knowledgeable. She recommended a great appetizer and a great sake to enjoy with our Omakase. We finished with an order of Santa Barbara Uni - it's a must! Our chef at the counter was excellent!
Be the first to ReplyI went here with family and was beyond impressed.
We got the omakase and our server recommended an amazing sake. They were very attentive and accommodating, the sushi was excellent and very fresh, and the the presentation was perfect. It's also a very neighborhood-y spot so again, they're very friendly and it's low-key. They don't take reservations so I recommend going in off days and/or early but in the case where it's a long wait, you can pop over to Billingsgate across the street for a glass of wine and some seafood apps.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best tasting sushi I've had.
The fish are so fresh and the temperature and texture of the rice is perfect. I always have a great time when I go here. However, I would not sit outside though. Not the environment I would pay, to eat sushi on the sidewalk.

After trying a few different times to visit, we finally made it last week and had a great nigiri night. Fish was super fresh, flavors were on point! On par with some of my fav meals in Tokyo. Staff was attentive and helpful. Glad to have this local gem back in action!
Be the first to ReplyThis place is absolutely amazing.
The salmon skin salad was to die for. They have Hokkaido uni that's not on the menu so make sure you're aware of that! The spider roll was INCREDIBLE and a huge standout. Will be back.
Be the first to ReplySaru is a wonderful little spot for sushi in Noe Valley.
I opted for the 8 piece omakase and 5 piece salmon special. I left quite full! Some of the highlights were...- King salmon belly, which is lightly torched- Ocean trout, likely my favorite piece- Madai with cured seaweedOverall, the food is great, the service is wonderful, and the price is "OK" for what you get. I paid $120 including tip for 1 person. If I had the option, I'd skip the Ikura (too salty), and seared fatty tuna.

I'm very picky with sushi but this place definitely made the cut! Great appetizers, great rolls, great fish! Worth every bit of the the 45 minute wait!

Years later, still perhaps my favorite sushi place in the city. It may be controversial to say it's "the best" it's certainly my favorite. The quality of the fish is consistently high and I love the intimate atmosphere without it being pretentious. That being said, it is small so there may be a long wait during peak times

Been wanting to try this place out for ages--but they're really popular and don't take reservations so there's always a wait. That said, it was worth it! Our wait was ~1.5 hours, but this was fine as we expected it and planned accordingly [we happen to live nearby, but there's plenty of good wandering to be had in the neighborhood if you don't--they'll text you when it's time].Such a good experience. The omakase is to die for! They put so much care into it, and it shows--even the tamago takes hours to make [theirs has no layers and is more like a single sponge], and the little cucumber salad amuse bouche was amazing.Had a lot of fun chatting with the servers and chefs since we tend to barrage people with questions when we're excited about a meal [esp. sushi, as my partner is a former sushi chef]. Good selection of alcohol that pairs well with the fish.My suggestion to future visitors: prioritize the omakase! That's where this place shines. We got three appetizers and while they were all tasty, they weren't as good nor did they feel like as good of a value. Of the ones we tried, the hamachi truffle was our favorite--but we're suckers for truffles. :DWe will be back!

I think we found our favorite sushi spot in the Bay Area in terms of quality and price point! A party of 4 of us came here around 5:45pm when they opened at 5:30pm and there was already a long line. We didn't make the first seating so we put our name and number down and was seated around 7pm. There are no reservations and it's first come first serve cause the restaurant is pretty small. The outdoor patio area definitely doubled their seating capacity. For those that are afraid of the SF cold like me, there are pretty strong heat lamps outdoors! During the wait period you can always head over to a nearby bar or check out all the little stores on the street which were pretty cute! We also saw another party ahead of us do their grocery shopping at Whole Foods nearby. We were lucky enough to get seated indoors and service was great! We got the 12 piece omakase nigiri for about $70. So prices were pretty reasonable for SF! We also got a hot sake to warm us up. My coworkers really hyped up the yellowtail but our favorite was definitely the red snapper. It was so good that our friends got another order of it. Overall the fish quality was really good and we wanted to go back the next day to take our out-of-town visitor but they were closed on Mondays. I can't wait to go back!

I love this place!! It's our go to place!! This is real Japanese food. Love that they put love and care into their food.
Be the first to ReplySimple and delicious.
The place's vibe is rustic, with a menu that is just the right size and quality impeccable. The fish was fresh, carefully cut and delicious. Price is fair. The nigiris were super high quality but very traditional. The rolls are a little more Americanized for their customer base in Noe but still delicious.Would come back for sure.
Be the first to ReplyCalled and they said it would b a 50min wait.
When J walked over a few mins later to put ourselves officially on the waitlist , they raised it to 1 hour 50 mins. We were placed on Waitlist App but then shortly after we got a message that were no longer on the waitlist. We called the restaurant and even went back twice to see why we were taken off the waitlist app, which would have accurately and fairly given us our wait time, and we were told me to ignore the app and come back in an hour and 50 mins.Seems clear to me that they were not being fair in their ย wait times but were selectively choosing who to give tables to first . My husband is a frequent customer and we love the sushi but I was very disappointed in their unprofessional and unfair practices.
