Sepia is truly a gem
An amazing restaurant, with well deserved recognition by Michelin. Since there were three of us, we tried everything we could. Each of us picked the four-course menu with the choice of one dish per course and we added the wine pairings also available. For the first course we had the fluke crudo, asparagus, rye, brown butter, caper, plus the caramelized onion consommé, delice de Bourgogne, sourdough and the steak tartare, crispy potato, mimolette, horseradish. Then the second course one of us had a sablefish pastor, grilled pineapple, infladita and morita chile and the venison shabu-shabu, hon-shimeji mushroom, chestnut, date, chili crisp. Following that we moved to the third course grilled short rib, black trumpet mushroom, parsnip, yorkshire pudding, the monkfish, pickled clams, white asparagus, horseradish, dill and last but not least the rohan duck breast, baby carrot, marcona almond, harissa-duck doughnut, chermoula. For dessert we loved the cannelé de bordeaux, buttered rum diplomat cream, roasted pineapple sherbet, tarragon and the cinnamon babka, golden raisin, crème fraiche ice cream, bay leaf. A very strong wine list, ask for Alex and you will great excellent service.

Fantastic experience at Sepia we had the tasting menu with the wines and it was fantastic. The service was excellent and the atmosphere romantic, we loved it
Be the first to ReplyA deserved star
Accustomed to Michelin ratings, we found in this restaurant the qualities highlighted by this star: - A very pleasant setting, of discreet elegance, with sufficiently spaced tables. - Attentive, friendly and very professional service - Subtle and refined cuisine, with very good products. The menu offered, in four courses with options, is very balanced. Presentation, successful marriage of flavors and textures for portions meeting European standards delight the eyes and the palate. - The wine list is international and very extensive. The cocktails are original and delicious. We drank a good Californian red wine. An excellent evening, therefore, fully confirming the Michelin opinion, for a justified price.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent creative cuisine with an impressive wine list
Sepia provided a delightful dining experience with comfortable ambiance, friendly, attentive service, and great food. The format is interesting with a four course tasting menu but with several options to select for each course as well as an option for two supplements (caviar appetizer and tete de moine cheese for a cheese course). The wine list is impressive with a range of well selected wines from major growing areas worldwide with costs ranging from fairly reasonable to very expensive. The quality of the dishes was outstanding with creative flavors and combinations of Asian and Western cuisine. Reservations are strongly advised. This is well worth a visit!
Be the first to ReplySpecial mother daughter dinner
Girls trip with my daughter. We wanted a special night out and sepia delivered. We did the 4 course tasting menu with wine pairings. We added the optional cheese course before dessert. Each bite was amazing! Staff was friendly and very knowledgeable. Highly recommend!!
Be the first to ReplyGood, not special enough for its reputation
We had booked for an anniversary, mostly from the online review. However after arriving, realized that we had been there before, just could not recall the food last time :-) The experience this time unfortunately was similar. The food was good, but not special, especially considering the reviews and the reputation. Not sure will be there again ...
Be the first to ReplyGood food, still hungry
The food was mostly good, though it seemed as if every dish was heavy on salt. Furthermore after spending over 200 on a single meal for myself, I left hungry. I enjoyed the restaurant but I do not see any reason to return and I would advise dining elsewhere if you are hungry.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful food and service. Michelin star well deserved!
What a delightful experience. Everything was perfect. Highly attentive service and excellent 4 course dinner menu. Highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyWe had a lovely dinner with friends at Sepia
We had a lovely dinner with friends at Sepia. The food was delicious but too expensive. They insisted on a 4 course meal including desert for $85. My wife and I don't normally eat deserts so we thought this was a waste of money and calories. The hostesses and servers were charming. The decor was lovely and the restaurant is not high energy. The other big problem was parking. We had to park in the parking lot of the Homewood Suites opposite Sepia. They charged us $33. Sepia needs to have valet parking or give a discount for parking at the Homewood suites so that the cost is no more than $20.

My wife and I met an old friend here for dinner. The food and service more than exceeded our expectations. I had the duck, which was perfect. My wife had the wine pairings and enjoyed them.
Be the first to ReplyElegant Foody restaurant with tremendous food but without the white cloths .. refreshingly cool
Truly a foody restaurant with an outstanding creative menu that will not disappoint. It's also surprisingly affordable for the quality of the overall experience. Service was excellent and so was the ambience. The restaurant was elegant without the white table cloths. I was surprised that there were few high end wines but the cocktails were really excellent.
Be the first to ReplyClassy restaurant with a unique culinary experience
Celebrated the holidays with a fun dinner with friends here in December. This is a 4 course dining experience. With the 5 of us we ordered almost all of the options for each course. I started with the beef tartare. It was displayed in a round do it shape with carmelized onions on a beef fat toast. Very good. We decided the winner of this course was the roasted butternut squash soup. Great flavors! Course #2 I enjoyed the country fried truffle chicken. It was such a unique presentation: pressed into a block with truffle oil weaved into it. The celery root- soft boiled egg porridge was the hit of this course although I enjoyed the chicken dish. Course #3 I had the veggie ratatouille lasagna- not my favorite. A little mushy & bland. The beef was the favorite in this course. The dessert course had three good options but the winner was the sage French toast honey crisp apple with ice cream.
The decor is very romantic- fun large chandeliers and dim lighting. Fun night!
A good place
It is a decent place. We, a party of 6, got a corner table, which is very nice. The waitress was extremely nice. The service was good. No complains here. The 4 courses diner was mostly fine, except the desserts. Some room for improvement is the wine parings. Could use some better reds. Overall it is good.
Be the first to ReplySolid Choice for Quality & Value
Visited the weekend Chicago restaurants were allowed to operate at 100% capacity, Sepia did not feel that way and I was thankful for that. Food was delicious and priced reasonably for the tasting menu when compared to similar restaurants in DC. Host and restaurant staff were very friendly, server could have been a bit warmer and attentive (coming from city people!), but nothing that spoiled the experience. Overall, a solid choice, good value for the quality of food and service.
Be the first to ReplyFabulous tasting menu
Michelin star restaurant did not disappoint. We went for a birthday celebration and had the tasting menu along with the wine pairing and the food was absolutely precious. Service was impeccable.
Be the first to ReplyInteresting food and great wine
I was underwhelmed by the decor and ambiance. The food was interesting, most of it good and all if it interesting and unusual. We did the 4 course pre-fix as that was all they were serving due to Covid-19. We also did the wine pairing, which we enjoyed as the server was knowledgeable about why it would go with our courses. The service was kind of chaotic with many different servers helping us during the evening, but we always did have help when needed.
It was an experience, but not sure I’d do it again.
Sepia to-go
Christmas dinner from Sepia vs cook from scratch at home? A no-brainer.
We last ate in Sepia 5 years ago (we're not geniuses obviously) as it was a special office annual dinner location for us. Great food and stellar service.
Fast forward to 2020 where every day has been a Blursday and we saw them offering a Christmas Dinner to reheat at home as Covid restrictions in Chicago meant no indoor dining. Ambiance and service won't figure in this review therefore.
We had a choice of protein and chose the rack of pork over the rack of lamb.
We had a 12 noon pick-up scheduled on the 24th and drove there. A man from the Proxi restaurant next door was on the street to welcome us and fetch our order and place it on the backseat of our car within 2 minutes. He was masked as were we.
We had a sack of food, neatly labeled with a comprehensive set of reheating instructions. A thank you e mail followed up with the same instructions included, just in case. Packaging was excellent (photos attached)
Come the day we fired up the oven. The longest reheat was the rack of Berkshire pork (which along with the mashed potatoes with black truffle butter and the roasted root vegetables lasted us two days). 40 minutes heating time during which we were tucking in to our baby greens salad and rustic mini loaves of bread with herbed butter. A standout appetizer was the salmon rillettes on toasted baguette slices-a small flavor bomb if ever. Served with dill and some light mayonnaise. A KFC-size bucket of this (which I could get my head into) would be nice!
A jus for the pork was provided and heated in the microwave.
We had a filling dinner (with leftovers). So filling I left the sticky toffee pudding with smoked creme Anglais until the next day, ditto the little box of cookies that were a nice touch.
The various flavors and textures of this meal meant we didn't talk much while eating it besides the standard "yummy" and "delicious". Could we ask for more?
Wine is available to order but we already had our own stashed away. Total cost with@ $20 in tax was $185.
Thank you Sepia for an enjoyable dinner at home!
Intelligent Modern American Cooking
A West Loop resident long before Fulton Market became Chicago’s hottest hangout, Sepia’s reopening sees the Restaurant operating in a new era of social distancing and time limits while the current $65 prix fixe may just be the Windy City’s best Michelin-starred bargain.
Housed in a 19th century print shop since 2007, restaurateur Emmanuel Nony smartly recruiting Executive Chef Andrew Zimmerman in 2009 and since earning accolades from the French tire guide, JBF and Jean Banchet Awards, diners visiting Sepia in the era of Covid-19 will begin their evening with checked temperatures followed by city-mandates necessitating masks be worn any time staff approach the table with fresh serviceware or even a refill of Water.
Undeniably inconvenient, QR Code menus another anomaly amidst this temporary “new normal,” it is largely thanks to the room’s grand appearance and gracious service that an air of refinement is retained, though the greatest part of Sepia’s appeal remains attributable to Chef Zimmerman and CDC Kyle Cottle’s Food.
Best classified as “Contemporary American,” though oftentimes globally influenced and focused on seasonal Produce, dinner began with an amuse of lemony Cucamelons amidst modernist textures, a breath of freshness quickly gone and followed by the first of two “Parker Rolls” that were nothing like the Boston namesake but nonetheless buttery and delicious.
A complimentary duo in terms of influence, Zimmerman’s training at the French Culinary Institute and time at NoMI visible in finessed flavors while Cottle’s tenure with Achatz is evidenced by manipulated textures that act to enhance rather than just “show off,” Foie Gras Mousse comes curved at $15 supplement, and eaten left-to-right explores Liver’s ability to magnify everything from earthy Sunchoke Chips to dried Shiso and juicy Cherries.
Adding another $16 for a second plate from course two, Corn Agnolotti with Pickled Blueberries and popped Sorghum suspiciously similar to Marc Vetri’s dish at Osteria Fiorella just one week prior, suffice it to say that although good it in no way compared to Chawanmushi that reminisces of Quenelles de Brochet with a velvety mouthfeel and generous amounts of Lobster.
Not about to pass on Duck, the combination of Stonefruits and Midwest Onions acting as a deft foil to complex Sauce, Dessert sees newly-acquired Pastry Chef Lauren Terrill prone to whimsy, her globally-traveled palate presenting aggressively spiced Funnel Cake with Nuts, Berries, Peaches and Citrus.
