Loved Everything!
Super comfortable and beautiful interior. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. We met the chief. Everything thing we tried made the palette happy! We shared the French Onion soup and Thick Cut Truffle Fries โฆ. I had the Duck Confit and my husband had the Dry Aged French Dip โฆ.we ate slow and savored every bite. We will be back next time we are in DC.

Shilling Canning Company on Water Street in DC is a great place to go for a quality and unique meal. I really like their menu and how well everything is prepared. I have been impressed with everything that they have available here.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Anniversary Celebration at the Chefโs Counter
We had the opportunity to celebrate our 25th Anniversary at the Chefโs Counter with the tasting menu and itโs definitely a do again! It was an amazing, exhilarating, and foodie-licious experience! If you get the opportunity, DO IT!!! The food, service, and drinks were all phenomenal and we will be back as they change their menu frequently! Watching the chefs work so closely was such a fabulous experience!
Be the first to ReplyDonโt get brunch here
The wait staff was very nice. The brunch was just so overpriced that it didnโt make sense. It wasnโt even good. I was extremely disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyGood - Not Great - And Overpriced
This restaurant is good -- not superb -- and way overpriced for what it is. A friend and I went recently for dinner, and we both ordered the 3-course tasting meal and accompanying wine pairings. I had the pork ragu and pappardelle pasta, the rockfish, and the carrot cake. The first two dishes were good, though not especially memorable, but I found the dessert to be overly sweet and rich, with much of the carrot flavor being overpowered. I will say the food portions were generous. The wines were very good, particularly the Domaine Huet (from Vouvray), which is one of the best wineries in the Loire Valley. The quantity of wine served for each pairing, however, was the smallest I've ever seen in a restaurant (and I'm accounting for the fact that this was a tasting menu, where typically you wouldn't be served a full glass.)
The decor was OK. It seemed overly dark in some areas, overly bright in others. Also, a bit of a weird mix of textures and materials -- lots of stainless steel, the copper oven, white tiles, industrial concrete, the dark wood tables and chairs. Didn't quite seem to jive or be coherent.
Service was uneven. Waitstaff were friendly and attentive but at times amateurish. At one point they cleared my dining partner's finished plate before I had finished that course. During another course the waiter said something to the effect of "are we almost ready for the next course?" while I was still working on my food, making me feel rushed. For the first wine pairing they brought a Rioja, not the Pinot Noir, as specified on the menu. At another point, the waiter came by to ask how a course was when we were both actively chewing, awkwardly forcing us to hurry up with our mastication just to reassure him how delicious it was! Etc., etc.
I realize that some of the above may sound like petty complaints, but the bill (for my meal alone) was around 133 dollars (including tax and tip). I have had more satisfying meals in DC in the last few months for half that total. When you spend that much at a restaurant you are expecting a certain level of excellence, and I have to say I did not experience that at Shilling Canning Company.
Saturday night in the Navy Yard
On a beautiful Saturday night in the navy yard District dinner was excellent. From the fried chicken and cornbread to the steak, frites, trout and vegan sweet potatoes this was a fun and delicious meal. Our waitress Conner was the best. Only complaint is it is a bit pricey
Be the first to ReplyFabulous Evening at the Chef's Table
We were celebrating our wedding anniversary and wanted to try something different. So on the recommendation of a colleague we booked the Chef's Table at Shilling Canning Company. So glad we did. What a fantastic experience.
7 courses of amazing food with excellent pairings. Food was fresh with a major emphasis on local sourcing. Started with Karma Beet Salad then on to Fried Orchard Point Oysters. Followed up with Handmade Ricotta Gnudi and Pan Seared Pennsylvania Trout. On to the Amish Chicken Ballotine and finishing with Cornmeal Financier and Dark Chocolate Pot de Creme. Everything was super with intriguing flavor combinations and tastes. Each dish was solid on its own. We had explanations from the chef at each turn of course and he was open to questions.
The service was friendly, efficient, attentive but unintrusive. It felt like we were eating with friends. It was a magical evening and made out celebration even more special.
Cannot recommend it highly enough.
Be careful!
Very good overall but sneaky. We ordered 2, 4 piece fried chicken. Got 2 thighs each no breasts! Managment said it was random and we could get 4 legs. Kinda shakey, just a warning!
Be the first to ReplyOur return to inside dining -- rewarded
For most of the pandemic, we ate outside everywhere We'd been to Shilling several times on that basis, but this time we ate inside. And our meals were just great. Everytime we eat here, we find (at least) one thing that is just totally outstanding. Today, it was the dark chocolate mousse. Just unbelievably good. The soft shelled crab was excellent too. And a salad with pigs ears -- not something I've eaten before (and you know I'm not talking about salad) was great. The pigs ears were small fried bits in the salad, and they tasted just like other small fried bits. Tasty and unobjectionable. Service was excellent. One of our favorite restaurants.
Be the first to ReplyVery Annoyed to Be Rushed
We joined two other couples for a Saturday night dinner at the restaurant. We were all there by about 20 minutes after the time of our 7 pm reservation, and were soon informed by the waitress that we needed to be finished in time free up the table for others who had 9 pm reservation. We were seated in the corner under a very loud music speaker โ so loud we had to shout to be heard -- but the waitress said there was no way to turn the music down because that speaker served the entire dining room. Later we talked to the manager and he was able to turn down the music slightly. But he again informed us of the need to be done by 9 pm. As we got our drinks, appetizers and finally the meal, the manager told us a couple more times about the 9 pm deadline. The food was excellent, the service was prompt, but being rushed was annoying, especially when the group is spending over $700 on food and drinks. Ironically, just as we were paying the bill, the manager came by and said the other group had arrived, but there were only four of them and they had been seated elsewhere. He told us we could linger as long was we wanted. No thanks.
Be the first to ReplyMy Second Visit. This time with the Family
Had to bring the family to my favorite WDC Restaurant. The Experience and Food Quality was outstanding. The Grits were wonderful, followed by the Chicken and Dumplings were to die for. (Not your ordinary Grits or Chicken and Dumplings for sure) others had the Flounder and raved with the flavor. The Baked Alaska for Desert was a big hit as Reid (Chef Owner) added the flames to our table. Special touch. We got to visit with some friends while dining, so it made it that much extra special. Reid and his wonderful wife Sarah have an awesome restaurant that you should all try. You will not be disappointed. Canโt wait to come back again. Hopefully sooner than later.
Thanks again to the very attentive wait staff for making our visit special. The Woopie Pie on Saturday night was Pumpkin Spice. Ooo la la.....
Delicious food, great covid set-up
Not only were the food and service superb but the set-up for outside tables was superb. The tables are far apart and the staff took great care with all of the needed covid precautions. We felt completely comfortable as well as delighted with our meal. They also have a large table that was able to accommodate our group of 5, which not all places were able to do. Their menu changes weekly and we canโt wait to return!
Be the first to ReplyFood is excellent each time I go!
Iโve eaten here many times. I love the ambience and the friendly staff. The menu changes frequently and I love the culinary adventures! My faves are their deviled eggs, oysters and cocktails. I plan to come eat as often as I can!
