Izakaya Tasty
Pros:
Izakaya food!!
Hostess and bartender were very nice
Amaaaaazing ambiance
Good concept
Cons:
Food was subpar - like doughy tempura and overcooked squid.
Service was variable. The waitress literally stopped by once and ignored us for the remainder of the time.
Bottom line, not great, but good place in a fun neighborhood but not really worth the price point and the service was somewhat disappointing.
There are better Japanese restaurants in Oakland, but this one has a cool factor and izakaya!
Run, donโt walk to this place. But donโt run passed it!
This is a hopping new Japanese place located in an unmarked two story green building. There is no restaurant street sign outside and no windows in this part of the building so look hard for the small plain street number above the door or the green color that I mentioned.
I have gone several times and on one occasion brought a Japanese friend who remarked that the ramen was โsophisticatedโ. The decor is modern and has a bit of an underground vibe, even though it is on the ground floor. It is accessible and good if you have anyone in your party who canโt manage steps. The kitchen is open and visible behind glass.
Parking in this part of town is very difficult because of the Fox Theater, the Oakland Ice Rink, the Oakland School for the Arts, the live music New Parrish venue and all of the amazing restaurants that have opened in this part of town but it is close to the 19th Street BART station. If you can take public transport, do it.
The food is amazing. If you are plant based, there are lots of options. Their salads are so delicious and perfectly dressed. On my most recent visit, we had the fried burdock, the warm mushroom salad, the Brussel sprouts, and mizuna greens. Not one leaf or piece of bacon was left. Then everyone slurped their respective ramen bowls in their entirety - the broth has layers to its taste.
It is tough to get in without reservations. Once more people figure out what this is, it will be impossible. I brought four very different sets of friends, and they have all LOVED it. Itโs a winner. They just started opening for lunch too.
Excellent!!
Who would have known there was this amazing spot right in the heart of Oakland!! I have to say it should be no secret yet when you reach the front door, there are no signs. The staff told me, "When your food is this good, no one has a problem finding us!". I'm a big lover of Japanese food so I could recommend the ramen. Absolutly Excellent!! Bravo Shinmai!! I am happy to visit again soon!

This strip of San Pablo behind the Oakland Fox Theater is starting to hop. There is live music at the New Parish and the Fox. New restaurants with a distinct ethnic vibe are starting to make an impression - Hopscotch, Plenty, Curry Up Now, Belly and now Shin Mai. They are all within 2 blocks of each other so you can roll through if you are really hungry/hangry.
Shin Mai can be difficult to locate because the landlord does not allow them to have a large sign, but it is very much worth finding. Once you get inside, the vibe is very nice but relaxed. Definitely, not a hole in the wall but it somehow refrains from being too hipster. The vegetable ramen was delicious and we ordered an extra egg because we shared. There are several competing establishments in this neighborhood, but his one holds it's spot at the top of the list --- for now.
What surprised us was the number of dishes with just plants that were delicious. Japanese restaurants often just have a seaweed salad, a green salad and edamame as the lone options, but not Shin Mai. We wolfed down the Mushroom Salad (arugula, black garlic vinaigrette), the Brussel Sprouts (pear, soy vinaigrette but HOLD the bacon) and the Mizuna Greens (soy vinaigrette, parsnip, pear, pistachio).
We tried their dessert - Coconut Panna Cotta with mango relish & sesame-shisho oil. That was the bomb! Each bite was divine and we savored each small spoonful. Portions are Japanese size, not standard obese American.
what a pity
I really wanted to like this place, the broth is so good
1st star knocked off for slow order taking, dude's clueless that we've been sitting there waving at him until we stopped a bus girl to get him over
2nd star knocked off for the noodle, it wasn't cooked long enough
Trendy
Cool and trendy but surprisingly family friendly. Loved the ramen. Great service. A bit pricey but not exorbitant. Food quality and presentation is good.

We came here for their pre-opening night. Delicious dinners and drinks. My favorite drink was the chu mai. So sweet yet dangerous ๐. The decor is a stylish industrious-trendy look yet down to earthy. We will be back for more delicious drinks and dinner.
