If you're looking for an affordable, high value omakase
If you're looking for an affordable, high value omakase option in East Village and you don't mind an efficient, timed (55minute) dinner, then Shinn East is perfect for you! They have two separate areas, with seating for about 10-12 guests in each with two chefs in each room. For $69 we had 13 courses - all sushi including a hand roll to finish. We also had the option to buy extra servings at the end (double up on pieces from the menu or extra special options including Hokkaido uni or special combos). Dishes include hamachi, madai, botan uni, ikura, chu toro, otoro with caviar, scallop, sewara, shima aji, salmon and unagi. My favorite was the botan uni and the otoro with caviar. Serving slices of the fish were generous given the price so each bite felt indulgent and tasty. They offer bottles of sake, and I found the menu very helpful with color coding for taste profile (sweet, dry, rich, etc), and also offer beers.
Be the first to ReplyGreat place for a budget omakase.
The storefront is split into two sides and the host will let you know which side to go to when you arrive. The space is really small but still cute, clean, and modern. For $69 you get 12 pieces and 1 hand roll. As many people also commented, the service is a little rushed, but nothing to complain about since they give you text message warnings before your resy. I felt the wasabi was a little too much on my first few pieces so I told the chef and he accommodated my preference. went for my sister's birthday and got a free "birthday cake" which we very much appreciated!! Some of my favorite pieces; -Ebi uni; so sweet & creamy -Chu toro & otoro with caviar; the fatty tuna pieces. always so good -salmon with foie gras; love the extra umami that the foie gras added -scallop; so sweet and fresh -ikura; tbh ikura is a hit or miss for me depending on the marinade that the restaurant uses, but Shinn East had an exceptional marinade. Not too salty, and a touch of sweetness. the hidden star of the night
Be the first to ReplyWent here a second time for a friend's birthday.
The fish was MUCH better quality this time since we went on a Saturday instead of a Thursday (pro-tip, never go to omakase in NYC on Thursdays... I've noticed the fish is always less fresh across all price ranges, lol). Definitely a decent omakase for the price, as long as you go after a fresh shipment gets in, and still a good starter omakase.

It's a small unassuming place, there are actually two split into two storefronts. The signage is very very small and it's quite easy to miss. The fish itself was fresh, minimally dressed up except for a few pieces which was a nice highlight to the meal. All the nigiri pieces were pretty lean with the exception of a couple pieces. The highlights for me were: - Botan Uni - sweet shrimp with a creamy uni on top - O toro with caviar - Nice and fatty - Salmon with foie gra and truffle - so rich and decadent, I kind of wish they ended on this note as this was the most memorable for me. This is a more affordable omakase spot so it did feel a tad bit rushed which is expected as they need to seat the reservation directly after.
Be the first to ReplyIf you're seeking a budget-friendly, fun and satisfying
If you're seeking a budget-friendly, fun and satisfying omakase experience in NYC, I wholeheartedly recommend Shinn East. For a fixed price of $69, you get 12 pieces of nigiri plus 1 handroll, which is a bargain compared to other omakase spots in NYC. Every fish served was fresh and high-quality. My favorite was the O Toro with Caviar (high fatty tuna) with caviar and edible gold flakes -- a beautiful presentation and melt-in-your-mouth flavor!
Be the first to Replygot food poisoning from here!!! would not recommend.
have been sick for days.. the price point is seemingly low but they rush out after an hour as that is when their next seating is, there was no communication about the fast turnaround time. it was hard to enjoy the meal because of how fast everything was coming.

Budget friendly, each piece of sushi was delicious BUT our chef was probably in training as he was not very well-versed with the making and names of the fish. Two pieces of my fish was broken when served, though it does not affect the taste, I was a bit dismayed. Our plates were never wiped down, as you can see from my photos. He tried telling us what each fish was but his thick accent made it hard to hear, and when asked again he seemed clueless and had to look up his notes.. The hostess/Waitress was mediocre as well, our used "hand wash" towel was sitting on our countertop for the whole meal, which isn't very appealing. We got asked about our beverage at the beginning and she never came back again. Given the whole experience is only 55-min, I know I should not expect too much, but it just left me appreciating the superb service I had in other Omakase restaurants. Ambience is nothing noteworthy. Overall it is a no-frills, budget friendly place if you just want some fast and fresh tasting fish.

Service: 4/5 Food: 4/5 Ambiance: elevated casual, quiet enough to hear each other talk Good value for an omakase experience. Dining area is split into 2 rooms, the one on the right has better lighting (brighter) imo. What I Ordered: - Regular Set: solid, classic. Covers all your typical courses, nothing particularly creative. favs: botan uni (shrimp + sea urchin), chu toro (med fatty tuna), o toro caviar (fatty tuna), sawara (spanish mackerel) - Seasonal Special: Japanese mackerel- fine, but i think i just don't like this fish; sable fish- a little chewy, but maybe i'm unfamiliar; blue crab handroll- sweet, simple, delicious.
Be the first to ReplyDecent omakase for the price, but nothing too special.
Pro: - fish was fresh - good variety of different fish types with the omakase menu - I asked the chef for no wasabi and he was able to do so for all my nigiri piece. I've had Michelin chefs forget and add wasabi on a piece half way through so I appreciate this Cons: - There's very little service and they rush you out in 40-50 minutes - We ordered a sparking white peach drink and they gave me sparking yuzu. We were ok w drinking the yuzu but how you gonna mess up when you're only serving like 5 parties and only need to take one drink order?? - chef doesn't wipe down the plate between pieces which im not a fan of.

I'd heard great things about shinn east as far as budget omakase places and I'm glad I finally tried it because I'd say I liked it a lot more than thirteen water! It's on the cheaper end of budget places (but places like tsumo are even cheaper, but have less going on), but you really get a lot for what you pay for. Each piece of sashimi was very fresh and delicate. I also liked how they started with lighter pieces, had some heavier/fattier pieces in the middle, and finished off with lighter pieces. They all had really unique flavor combos and were beautifully presented! Highly rec!
Be the first to ReplyAnother great affordable omakase place in Manhattan! I made
Another great affordable omakase place in Manhattan! I made a reservation for a Saturday night through Resy in February 2023 and it was $69 per person for 12 pieces + handroll. The fish was great; the scallop was the highlight for me. So good that I ordered another! This was better than some of the other omakase places at this price point, and while Sushi by M is still my favorite, Shinn East is up there. Omakase prices go up by the week at a lot of places, so go ASAP!4.5 stars.

Chef was nice and i think its worth trying out if you're on a value oriented omakase journeyOmakase was a nice mix of straight up fish and unique combos. For $69, this 12 nigiri, 1 handroll sushi place was a solid option.Atmosphere isnt a strong suit, and normal waitstaff were evidently new.
Be the first to ReplyIt was mediocre imo.
I probably wouldn't come again. Fine sushi and some pieces were pretty good but nothing that impressive overall. I would rate it a little above Sushi By M. The fish won't melt in your mouth if you want that type of quality. For the price you should just go to Taikun - $20 more expensive but quality is top tier. Also the 1 hr seating feels pretty rushed so would recommend you either come on time or for a more casual meal. The service is a bit zoom zoom - I didn't like how the waitress kept checking in. Meh experience. But if you want value, this is somewhat a decent choice.
Be the first to ReplyThe omakase itself was great, and the Chef, amazing.
Very tasty. However, the space is a bit tiny and disordered. Didn't appreciate the staff leaving the door open most of the time, so when I looked to my right, there was the toilet, wide open. The service by the wait staff was meh. Maybe, a bit overpriced.

Amazing place! Some of the best Omakase I've had in the city. Really fresh and so flavorful and for a pretty good price too. Can't wait to come back
Be the first to ReplyThe fish is fresh and yummy.
The only problem is the dining experience. They have a 50 min dine in policy for their omakase which including taxes and tip cost about 90 dollars per person. While the fish was awesome, I care a lot about not being rushed out and enjoying the dining experience per se.
Be the first to ReplyThey recently opened another seating area directly next
They recently opened another seating area directly next door and boy is it different than the original. I mean look at the picture attached to this. The right looks like a typical warm, welcoming, and intimate omakase setting, while the left looks more like a hospital. As we are standing outside awaiting to be seated for our 8 o'clock reservation, I find myself praying to every god I can think of to be seated in the nicer part. Fate had other plans. We walk in and it just feels sterile. I feel as though I have entered the Morgue in CSI Miami. Word to Horatio Cane.Anyways, once I was done being extremely overdramatic I was ready to give the food a chance to redeem the ambiance. We ordered a bottle of sake to start and they came in the most beautiful little sake glasses. Fire and Ice vibes. I loved them so much I actually ordered the same ones for the bi-annual occasions I have sake at home. Worth it.The fish was phenomenal with the highlight being the Chu Toro. It quite literally melted in your mouth. Overall, then food was on par with a few omakase places I went to when I was in Tokyo. Staff was great and welcoming as well. I will definitely be back, but hope they make the new space a bit nicer and more welcoming.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best cost friendly omakases around! I've tried
One of the best cost friendly omakases around! I've tried other places around this price range and I have to say this place is towards the top of the list. Pieces were substantial, fish was fresh, and rice had flavor. I was seated in their outdoor counter area and definitely think it would've been even better indoors.I don't get why some people give a low rating and then compare it to other omakases at a higher price range. It is well worth it for the price and I would definitely come back for a casual dinner.
Be the first to ReplyA wonderful budget-friendly omakase.
Came here for a friend's birthday and enjoyed it! It was extremely cold that night (we were the last reservation that night) but there's a heated waiting room outside. Very small and intimate place. They were very friendly and gave our friend a birthday chirashi with tuna, uni, and caviar. My favorite was the otoro with the caviar and gold flakes!Be sure to go early because it was hard to find parking around the restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyThis was my first omakase experience and I really enjoyed
This was my first omakase experience and I really enjoyed it! Every piece of sushi was delicious, and each piece was also better than the previous one. I thought at some point I would think it was just more of the same, but I was really pleasantly surprised with each piece. I don't have anything further to say about the food other than it was delicious and would definitely recommend. Separately, I think it would have been helpful to have some hooks to hang coats or bags so the chairs would be more comfortable to sit on.
Be the first to ReplyProbably one of my favourite restaurants in the US now.
Everything was incredible and the flavours were well selected to go together. If I had this restaurant back home, I would go to it all the time!I'm not a huge fan of sweet shrimp, uni and scallops but somehow this place mixed the flavours that all of those items I usually don't like tasted so good!! I even ordered more of the scallops because they were just that amazing! As we went down the omakase list we got to salmon. I thought "how can they make salmon taste better? it's already so good as it is". But I was proven wrong as they torched the fish and added a bunch of toppings to create such an incredible flavour. Love this place!!
Be the first to ReplyShinn East is known for their budget-friendly omakase,
Shinn East is known for their budget-friendly omakase, which includes 12 nigiri pieces and 1 handroll. The menu does change every so often based on availability and on the season. Our set included the otoro with caviar, kamasu, and uni. I think out of the pieces we tried, the otoro was the most preferred; the ikura wasn't particularly fresh, and some of the fish was kind of stringy, which meant that they weren't cut or prepared well.Note that if you have been to higher end omakase restaurants, expectations will need to be lowered; our group felt that the price somewhat reflected the quality, but still marked a bit high. The place is small and intimate; service was friendly.I'm glad I was able to try this place out, but wouldn't return.+budget-friendly omakase+not-so-fresh sushi; stringy fish
