Skates On The Bay Berkeley Reviews from The Last Year

Appetizers get the W here! Our group first ordered their famous crab artichoke dip and calamari appetizers, for the main portion we ordered different sides and an entree that was recommended by our waiter (phenomenal BTW! I regret not knowing his name. David? Joseph? He has a star tattoo and it was his birthday! Great attitude and vibes!) What better combo than great conversation, food and libations in a lovely setting overlooking the Bay Bridge?!
I have been coming to Skates on the Bay in the Berkeley
I have been coming to Skates on the Bay in the Berkeley Marina since it opened. I was disappointed today when I invited two of my colleague's to meet me for "happy hour" 4-6 pm and that discontinued Friday happy hour. It is now only Monday-Thursday so it cost us twice as much as we expected to pay, exceeding our budget, HOWEVER our sweet sincere waitress TARA saved the day! She is only 21 and new so we taught her a few things about cocktails, types of wine etc. I would recommend coming Monday-Thursday 4-6 pm and ask for TARA!
I had never been to skates before and I was in Berkeley on
I had never been to skates before and I was in Berkeley on my way back from San Francisco and it was such a beautiful afternoon I decided to take a road less traveled ha ha... After running my errand in Berkeley I went over the bridge to the other side of where the bay is off of telegraph and I followed this road down and ran into skates this restaurant sits right on the ocean and has windows all the way around it it's pretty much like sitting on a dock only it has windows. It was a Sunday it was busy I got a seat at the bar right away the bartender was helpful and I ordered a beer and then I ordered clam chowder and lobster chowder to go... The service is pretty fast a lot of people were eating brunch and everything looked great all the people looked happy it is a little loud but what are you expect it's Sunday brunch... I would go back probably for lunch to sit and enjoy the view All in all my experience was good even though it was just takeout the chowders were both fine the portions are a little small but I think a lot of places when they give to go orders now they downsize. Atmosphere is a four stars for sure... A great view of San Francisco passing through or as a destination I think it is a spot that everyone would be happy at .
When I entered the restaurant there was a smell.
I think it may have been coming from the fish tank, which looked dirty. Also the women's bathroom was out of toilet paper (in my stall). Not a good experience. The food was good and the server was especially nice. The last time I ate at Skates it was a very pleasant experience. That was ten years ago. Management please get rid of the smell and check on the bathroom supplies. Your prices are in the mid to high range. I expect better...

It had been several years since I was here last, and was really disappointed by the mediocre service and food. Staff at the front desk were not welcoming or friendly. We were on time for our reservation, but were told 'they were behind', but no estimate on when we would be seated. When we were finally called after 20 min or so, the same woman at the desk then told us to be seated across from the raw bar. 5 minutes later someone came and 'beckoned' us. My husband had to ask her if we were to follow her! It didn't get much better...the wait staff acted as if she didn't care whether we were there or not. During the meal she may have come by once after the meal was served, and only again to bring us the dessert menu. When our food arrived, it looked like it was thrown on the plate, was lukewarm, and very little flavor. This experience was so different than what I remembered from before...Definitely will NOT be coming here again.
As we walked to the place the view was breathtaking.
We had made a reservation 3 weeks in advance, the whole point was to enjoy the sunset. We were rushed at every point as soon as we got seated. It was not even a busy night. We started with the oysters which were fresh and tbh really great. The main course was decent too, we got the Moroccan mahi mahi, hamburger and salmon. However, as the view was getting prettier while there was plenty of food left at our plate we were rushed for a dessert menu. This definitely did not uplift our mood as if the gestures from the server was not more obvious enough for us to rush and not soak in the pretty view. Finally we ordered a molten lava cake, we had asked for an ice cream on top of it as a special request. The menu did say ask for a flavor which we did, only to be told sarcastically that "vanilla is the only flavor we have". The cake finally arrived nothing was molten, ice cream was bland with a half of scoop of ice cream. We finally showed modest sign of detest of the whole situation as the experience turned sour from the very start. In conclusion, the food is great, the view is even better but the service is horrendous. You can forget about enjoying the view without the server hustling you at every moment.

We had an event here and despite lots of calls, they were completely unprepared. The service was less than mediocre, mixing up multiple people's drinks. When we had them correct it they charged for the new drinks. They said they would refund the other drinks but never did even after multiple emails asking. The view is beautiful but after spending several thousands of dollars here over two years- we do not plan on returning.

Haven't been in several years and agreed to go for my husband's birthday. Started off the night politely being told that our table would be ready shortly... no problem. Went to the bar to enjoy a drink. No seats were available so I stood at an opening and ordered my drink. While I was waiting for my order a bartender approached me asked me what I was doing there and that "I shouldn't be hovering over the customers" . I found this incredibly rude and unkind. If you don't want customers I'll go somewhere else. After that service and food was great. However, I won't be back given the treatment at the start of the night.
One of the best views I've seen at a Berkeley restaurant
One of the best views I've seen at a Berkeley restaurant that's tasty and won't break the bank. Went to the restaurant on a Sunday morning with a large party. The wait staff was flooded with guests rights as the doors opened at 11:30 and with the array of reservations and walks ins, they handled it like champions. We were a large group and were sat a row away from the windows but it didn't matter because the view engulfed the experience. The garlic foccacia bread they place on the table was so dilectable. I ordered the Caramel Cafe , an espresso mocktail, which was sweet and smooth and the prime rib hash from the brunch menu. The food was a fun concept and was good minus needing more seasoning. I added salt, pepper and hot sauce to give it some pizzazz. I also tried the crabcake Benedict which was nice having the crab cake instead of the English muffin but could always use more crab. Once again the staff was amazing and even helped us place a larger bag we had in a coat check area. I would recommend this resturante for anyone seeking a beautiful, seafood/American fare with a gorgeous view.
We recently went there to celebrate my son's birthday.
For a Monday night it wasn't too empty or too busy. Since we went as a group, we had a good time. The food was decent. The salmon in seafood trio was mediocre though. The service and the ambiance was great. The view was awesome as we sat right next to the window. They also have complementary crème brûlée for the birthday boy which was awesome. The fried banana split was very enjoyable.

We found Skates on the Bay when we recently had an appointment in Berkeley and were looking for a place close by. We were wanting to miss traffic going home so we took our time. We started out with each having a cocktail - their Mai Tais are superb. We split a California roll as an appetizer with some fries. We enjoyed a view of the beautiful sunset on the Golden Gate Bridge across the bay. Then, we split the Sesame Seared Ahi. These were all delicious. All in all, a pleasant evening before we journeyed homeward. The bill was slightly over $108 (not bad for Bay Area prices). However, beware that they charge a "Living Wage surcharge" so we deducted that before computing our tip. Sorry, not up to us to pay for health care in place of the employer. Cheers!
I just had to give 3 stars because I was so embarrassed
I just had to give 3 stars because I was so embarrassed when I took my kids here for our outing .. it smelled like urine as soon as you walked in .. like as if I had just walked into the a public restroom...all customers walking in said the same thing and if they didn't the face showed.. and I was surprised because I have been here before. So maybe some type of issue going in...Now food lol .. it was good and we were pleased and happy the smell didn't follow us so glad ... nice water view
Views of the Golden Gate Bridge
The view from this restaurant cannot be beat, but the food can use a bit of work. Everything was just OK. The salad was on the small side even for a side salad.
Not good.
Not good. Oysters on the half shell were absolutely destroyed by the shucker. Pieces of shell in the oysters, and hardly recognizable as oysters. Shrimp cocktail was mushy and chewy at the same time, somehow… and the crab and shrimp linguine was flavorless. View was nice. Parking lot warnings about theft were certainly off putting. Definitely a run-down area.
Skating by on the location
The price is solely for the beauty of the setting. Our server was not well trained and the policy of asking if you want sparkling or flat water without saying that you are charged for either (tap water is not offered) is unfriendly. And we waited for a long time for both the server and the water. The food was okay. The salad was overdressed. The bleu cheese was not on the side as requested. The hot course was brought to our table before our salad and had to be sent back. And do we not have any local fish in the Bay Area? There is so much better food in Berkeley!
Fix your reservation system
Reserved a table for a birthday and, after arriving 5 min late, no table available and 4 parties ahead of us. They blamed it on the customers taking too long to eat. Really?? After 10 minutes, they tried to shunt us off to the bar area, which we did not want, so we waited another 20 minutes and finally got seated in the restaurant. The food was very good, wait staff also, though it was quite noisy. The view, of course, can't be beat.
No longer a favorite
Go for the view because lately it is the best thing about the restaurant. I'm unable to find information if it has changed ownership but it is definitely been on a downhill decline. Will you still love it but during restaurant week had such a bad experience that we wound up leaving with Apologies from the manager. We wrote it off as a bad night with the staff and restaurant being overwhelmed and just this week returned for my birthday dinner with family and we're very underwhelmed with not just the food but the service, it's disappointing to say, but I don't think it will be a special occasion destination for my family anymore
Excellent views and good food
I had been to Skates on the Bay several times years ago and was not overly impressed with their seafood at that time. I was pleasantly surprised that the food had improved considerably. The farmers market salad was not quite as described- the cauliflower seemed raw and not charred and I don’t think everything listed was in the salad.. The fish Main dish was excellent. The service was very good as was the beautiful view.
Come on you can't make eggs benedict
Been visiting this restaurant for almost 40 years. Today went for brunch lunch. Extremely dissatisfied with the traditional eggs benedict. Very poor for such a traditional item. We had a chicken BLT which was good but the other half of our meal was terrible we're not order that again. The views were spectacular as usual
View, great food and service, a bit pricey.
The view is worth the price. The food and service are excellent. We brought our toddler with us for an early dinner and we’re catered to very well. The food was incredibly good. The wine list was great also.

How do you set a timeline for getting your bid accepted? I can’t wait till the actual time I want to go. I want to know at least eight hours ahead of time. How do you do that?
