My family and I have an annual Christmas Eve tradition of eating at one of Chicago's great steakhouses. This year we picked Smith and Wollensky. It wasn't our first time there, but it was probably 15 years since our first visit. We were disappointed in our return sadly. For many reasons. Our server, Marlon, was very professional and initially extremely attentive. Drink menu very diverse and our soups were great (split pea and French onion). My son ordered a salad and specifically asked for no blue cheese (feta instead). It came with blue cheese; Marlon very apologetic, and took care of it quickly. My wife's tomato and onion salad disappointed as the tomatoes were mushy. Entrees were just okay; filets ordinary and my NY strip looked more like a ribeye. Nothing special. Sea bass probably best entree (ironic for a steak place) and sides (truffle Mac, whipped potatoes, brussel sprouts) also good, but again not special. Toward the end of our dinner we noticed our service really drop off. Not just our server, but the tables around us too. It's as if they all were working another part of the restaurant by design. By this point we simply wanted to box up a couple of the proteins, and maybe order one dessert. But the time delay was just too long and energy in the entire upper floor dining room seemed to drop. We passed on dessert. We got our bill, and talked amongst ourselves. Post COVID inflation was on display big time. We estimate same meal a few years ago was probably 20% less. When paying $600 plus for 4 people, plus tax and tip, we didn't think our expectations were out of line. Thus, the 3 star rating. Not sure we will be back any time soon.
