Dinner was absolutely perfect
Hands down one of the best experiences ever. The manager Greg assured our service was impeccable and all the food he recommended was just right. This is the perfect place to go with your friends or a date night. Nothing skipped a beat. I 100% will be back here with friends sooner rather than later and I’m so excited to try the other dishes. Bone marrow pasta is to DIE for.
Be the first to ReplyBad and Uncomfortable
I went with my partner on Valentine's Day for a date. From the moment we arrived the lady at the front desk was talking to my partner, trying to converse with him in Greek. Very flirty and giggly but most importantly completely ignoring me. I thought it was strange. But it got even worse. We would go out for a cigarette and she would again ignore me walking past the front desk but shout his name, (his first name) like she was his friend, and shout, "where are you going (insert name)?? Are you leaving?" He said no I'm going for a cigarette...Later on in the evening when we were on our way out I actually looked right at her to see if she would give me this same "service" but no she's ignored me. 1 second later as he's following me out she shouts his name AGAIN. She says "Where are you going? Are you leaving" and then began to speak to him in Greek again. I did not get a single word. I think it's was blatant flirting from start to end. I think it was disrespectful because I wasn't getting any sort of attention from her. It made me feel uncomfortable. I go fine dining all the time in Mayfair, but this place I won't be going to again.
Be the first to ReplyLovely, fresh food. Poor service though.
Live near this restaurant and it always looks full and the menu looked great so thought we’d try. Focaccia is a must - really really tasty. The food itself was great - everything tasted very fresh. Both of us thoroughly enjoyed the food, and the drinks were also lovely. Service let the experience down though. Very slow on orders and the staff seemed to forget we’d even ordered to start with, coming back to our table 15 minutes after ordering asking if they could help us with anything. For context, we went for lunch on a Sunday and the restaurant wasn’t full. Would still recommend visiting if you are nearby. See pics of the burrata and the squid ink & octopus risotto.

Outstanding! Couldn’t ask for more, highly recommend. The food was exceptional and the service was warm and friendly. I went with my mum and we loved it.
Be the first to ReplyThe Flavours and sheer quality speaks for themselves.
Saturday night for four, my friends live just up the road in Blackheath and have eaten here before. I'm vegetarian ( or Pescatarian ) to be correct, some of the most wonderful flavors and fresh locally sourced ingredients I have ever had at a restaurant, many claim to cater for veggies, but few deliver, Sparrow most certainly does, including two portions of the tastiest and most authentic Foccasia bread we had eight other plates of food between us, everything was a sensation, dont't expect huge portions, do expect a culinary journey, we spent just over £50.00 a head, that included two bottles of very fine Reisling and Sauvignon Blanc, plus we all left feeling sated hunger wise, we loved it. Some may say it's a little expensive, others that the portions were a little small for them, but you won't find anyone doubting the quality or flavours put before them ...... Top Quality, and it shows.
Be the first to ReplyNovel oasis amongst Lewisham eaterys
It may sound somewhat superfluous but yes, I do say 'novel oasis' because Sparrow certainly provides - for me at least - a new and alternative eating out experience to the more standard array of dining spots in Lewisham. The sharing of plates arrangement means there is more diversity in tasting and there is a good variety of choice in the mains menu. I really enjoyed the dark cuttle fish risotto which had good 'bite' and plenty of flavour. We supplemented it with ox cheek and pigs head and a fig-based salad. Our waitress Emma was pleasant and attentive but unintrusive as were other staff. I asked for a hot chili based sauce and was presented with a very flavorsome smooth house prepared chili 'jam' - and was later offered more of same. I would like if the mains portions were a little more substantial if meant for sharing - as my companion and I had 4 mains sharing plates and could easily have eaten more. Good reasonably priced wine list - it would be nice if wines were available in single 250ml glasses; neither of us initially felt that we would want a second 175ml glass but as we were sharing 4 dishes we instead opted for a bottle. Unless I am wrong there is just 1 toilet cubicle serving the entire restaurant which must prove in demand in when the house is full!! Overall, this was a very satisfactory and interesting first experience. Thank you, Emma.
Be the first to ReplyGem in the heart of Lewisham
Not the sort of restaurant you expect to find plonked next to the swarming A20 and massive housing development, but this is a foodie oasis. ‘People come for the curry’ they said - and it was good - but for us the cauliflower starter and the cinnamon ‘oysters’ for dessert were something else. London seems full of decent, sometimes quite expensive restaurants where the food is over refined. Here things were fresh, simple and delicious. And reasonably priced. Service was warm and friendly, cocktails were great too. Deserves to do well.

Great food served with nice selection of alcoholic and non alcoholic cocktails. Warm welcome and attentive service Highly recommended Small but perfectly formed wine selection
Be the first to ReplyA Little Gem, definitely worth a journey to Lewisham
I love going to restaurants where the owner is always present; better still if he/she is in the kitchen doing the cooking. This ensures pride in the food produced, a consistency of quality and the maintenance of fine service. So it is with Sparrow where the owner Terry is in the kitchen cooking. The menu is not large and changes from time to time. My wife and I shared the pig's head and hock terrine starter (don't worry, there isn't a pig head to be seen). The taste and gelatinous quality was excellent, full of flavour. As a main course, she had a chicken schnitzel, crispy on the outside but tender and juicy inside. I had the mussels with coco beans; a very clever combinations which I haven't come across before. We finished off with a ginger brulee. A two course meal costs £20 and £25 for three courses. This is an absolute steal for the quality. For those precious types who never venture beyond zone 1, I would strongly recommend that you take a trip to Lewisham. The restaurant is small so booking is essential.
Be the first to ReplyTasty but Tiny portions
4 of us visited Sparrow for dinner and whilst the food was tasty, the portion sizes were tiny. It is not cheap either - for what you pay you’d expect a lot more - didn’t represent value for money, and we all left hungry!

Fantastic food and wonderful service. Highly recommended. Very creative dishes and very exiting wine selection. It is the place to be to have a lovely dinner
Be the first to ReplyBest restaurant in South East London!
In between Lewisham station and the Lewisham mall I found this extraordinary restaurant. The food is amazing, it is fairly small but a lovely atmosphere and this is the best food I have had in London since I was in Italy in March. If you want amazing food with a laid back atmosphere come here. I will recommend it to everyone.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent find
Would highly recommend - an excellent, reasonably placed find in the unexpected neighbourhood of Lewisham (Sparrow would not be out of place in Chelsea or Islington). Visited for lunch at the food was 10/10, all the way from the “cocktail of the day” through three courses to dessert.
Lunch is £20 p/p for two or £25 p/p for three, and honestly some of the dishes could have had a £25 price tag each! In particular the char siu pork belly and the duck liver parfait stood out, and the home made doughnuts were amazing.
Will definitely return for future meals, great to have somewhere so good locally.
Tasty food, bird-like portions
Sharing is subjective; if you are being polite, a plate can go a long way. At Sparrow your table would have to be...non existent. Exactly why would you share a £15 plate of pasta that arrived with only 4 pieces the size of half a spring roll? The food was tasty but this is a pretentious place.

What a wonderful experience. Sharing plates all full of flavour that exploded in your mouth. Everything was delicious: olives - so yummy; pumpkin and chickpea salad laced with tahini, squid ink pappardelle and succulent roast partridge. All accompanied by wine that was available by the glass. We tried four! Oh and the jam roly poly and creme brûlée were lovely.

Exceptional food for very reasonable prices. A surprise find in this part of town. The star was dessert - the cinnamon oysters. I definitely wish I could have eaten more.
A couple of really minor things, I’d recommend that you order sides with your main/meat dishes. Our server didn’t so it felt very meat and gravy towards the end. And we were sat at a very tight table right by the toilets which was less enjoyable. Table sizing is difficult as they obviously want to fit as many people in as possible but when the dishes are ordered to share (as recommended) there simply isn’t enough room to be comfortable. Oddly, there were lots of young families including toddlers until late in the evening (9pm-ish) so noise levels are high and it is a bit hectic. Not quite the romantic gathering.
If you are covid weary there is zero chance of socially distanced tables here.
Overall a great visit and we will be back.
Delicious. Food this good in this part of town is a treat
Came here for our 10th wedding anniversary dinner and it did not disappoint. Setting is not especially beautiful but the oooh and aaah factor of what will be on your plate will more than make up for this. `They do pack the tables in tightly so anyone worried about social distancing should probably best give this a swerve for a while longer.
Service is warm and friendly, prices are reasonable (the lunch menu is a steal to be honest....take a train out of central London and come here rather than eating a boring lunch at the Ivy) and it is literally 2 mins walk from Lewisham Station. I've known this area a long old time and I am so joyful that this place has come to raise the bar. May other local eateries of this quality follow in droves!
Food wise, my husband and I went for 4 small plates and 1 shared bigger plate (we were very hungry). The cocktails are amazing so don't miss those; I'd go cocktail then wine by the glass. Nice to see Commanderia on the dessert wine menu - a drink that doesn't get enough recognition in the UK.
More bread with the rillette, please - and why no cheeseboard option? Otherwise - FABULOUS.
Delicious food as always - service could’ve been better
We visited here for the first time since before the pandemic, having been regulars.
It was lovely to be back and also to see so many people back there. Sadly there weren’t enough staff serving which had a major impact on service - everything was slow, delayed, had to be followed up on. We felt very bad for those serving and this review would’ve been a five had the service not let things down.
The food was absolutely delicious as always, we both had the beetroot salad to start and I had the pork belly for my main which was so beautiful! My dessert was the apple and calvados trifle which was disappointing particularly as there was just far too much thick cream layered on top making it really sickly.
Even though there was some disappointing parts to our visit, I would definitely go back and recommend.
Thank you!
Reviews are correct
Always gets harder for the restaurant when people read reviews and expectations aren’t met but on this occasion they were. Food quality and service has been mentioned before so I have nothing to much to add. It’s friendly, efficient, unobtrusive, the Focaccia the best ever, the pancetta carbonara superb, the duck leg perfectly cooked. Downsides? Where to park if you’re not local ? The focaccia so good they ran out (but we were a late table), I needed more to soak up the juices of the plates. We visited from the New Forest for our daughter’s graduation in Sidcup and needed to come here to find a dinner that marked the occasion. Thank you! If only more restaurants served with a smile like this. I would recommend still phoning to book rather than rely on the online booking system.
Look forward to returning.
Great lunchtime visit
Went here for my other half's birthday lunch, having wanted to try this local restaurant for a while. The food was really lovely: sweet and savoury pear, blue cheese and walnut salad, and burrata with romesco sauce to start. £4.50 for 4 small slices of sourdough was a bit excessive but delicious went well with the starters.
Mains: my bavette steak with potato cake was heavenly, though my husband asked for it to be cooked more well done for me despite me saying I didn't mind medium rare! I wish I'd ignored him as it was slightly tough, I imagine the usual medium rate is perfect. He had chicken and chorizo risotto. He enjoyed it, I tasted it and lived the flavour but the chicken was very fatty or maybe it was squishy skin? I deposited it in my napkin, discreetly I hope!
Dessert defeated us: a massive bowl of cocoa-rich chocolate mousse, caramel cream and a sort of caramelised chocolate chip cookie on the side heaven. Good coffee too. We had to rush off and were full, otherwise would have polished it off.
The service was polite and friendly, though they seemed busy. Often at restaurants with sparse and innovative menus you expect too much explanation of the dishes, but we actually had to call the waiters over 3 times to ask what different things were on the menu. They were happy to tell us, but a simple overview would have been appreciated (colton basset, romesco, coppa, salmoriglio... just us?).
The lunch menu - £20 for 2 courses, £25 for 3 (wed-sat) - was good value. I can see how the prices creep up in the evening, where the main I had was 20. But great food, would return.
Absolutely delicious from beginning to end
First visit to Sparrow. Absolutely delicious. Honestly the best meal we’ve had in ages. Great experience and would definitely recommend. Tried to call in a week ago, but they were fully booked. Having now been can see why. Worth booking

This was a great experience, small plate approach with every dish delicious. I understand the menus changes every day but when we were there the Chicken Risotto, Pea Bruschetta and Lemon Cheese Cake were amazing. Service was quick but not to quick. Will be back.
