😒 3/5 - mixed feelings

My wife and I make a point of visiting French style bistros when we travel because there are none in our small city in the mountains. The St Jack bistro in NW Portland is really promising but we left with mixed feelings. First off, our Governor has used executive orders to limit restaurants to 50% capacity or less. St Jack is doing their best to stay legal and to still stay in business. There is a line of tables outside next to the street under a covered canopy warmed by space heaters. These were marginally effective at keeping people warm on a damp and cold March night. Be sure to good a "standard table" if you want to eat inside and hope that your reservation doesn't get bumped.
We started with an excellent pate en croute, a hearty mélange of meats, fats, and fruits baked in a crust. This paired well with our Washington State red wine but we waited a very long time for a simple baguette to spread it on. Our salad was tasty but our waitress insisted that the greens were 'oregon arugula" when clearly they were something else.
The Orielles de Crisses ( fried pig skin) was a dish that was simultaneously strange and addictive. These huge and light fries were not the pork rinds that you buy at a mini-mart. We kept commenting that "I'm not sure that I like these, but I can't put them down either" and I would order them again.
The mussels in a saffron broth was a definite miss. While the broth was nice for dipping my bread, the creamy flavor was mismatched with the ocean taste of the shellfish. We will try something else on our next visit.
Please note that parking can be hard to find in this gentrified neighborhood, so allow some extra time for hunting for an open space before you meal.
