Stissing House Pine Plains Reviews from The Last Year
This old inn has been turned into the warmest dining room
This old inn has been turned into the warmest dining room imaginable. With candles burning and a palpable 19th century ambiance, you're almost a little surprised to see the chef's imaginative takes on some classics - the roasted chicken, the stew, the salmon, the asparagus with hollandaise. They sparkled with the magic touch of a deeply intentional chef. Really, this place is a category buster. Worth a long drive!

I love everything about the space -- a very beautiful, comforting dining experience. Unfortunately, food was average and even understanding the focus on seasonal menus and minimalism, it's surprising how so many of the dishes really didn't take advantage of the simplicity of ingredients to amplify individual flavors (and more than a few were over-salted). I gave three stars because would like to try again, and wonder if some of the changing menu makes certain dishes hit or miss just because a lack of depth in cooking with the ingredients.
Great experience.
Wonderful ambiance, food and service. Highly attentive and not obtrusive. In a spectacular old building. Cannot wait to go back. Be sure to get a Negroni with their house-made vermouth!
A Very Good Regional Restaurant
Interested to read the very divergent opinions of this restaurant. My wife and I ate at Stissing House last night. As (some) others point out - and as we've experienced on prior visits - the food, service and ambiance are all good. The dining room was full and buzzy, but the overlay of relatively loud music being piped-in made it annoyingly loud. My only other comment is that the Coconut Cake - a constant feature on the menu and which I hadn't tried before - was totally underwhelming. It was dry and not very flavorful (as such, my wife and I both said that it tastes like something we'd baked ourselves). As to price, its moderately expensive, but in line with other good restaurants in the region. For the area Stissing House is one of the better restaurant choices available. It is clearly well-run, has professional staff and the standard of the cooking is consistently good. Whether it lives up to the NYT's rating as one of the top restaurants in the country is debatable.
I don’t understand the hype
Please tell me why this restaurant gets so much hype when the food and atmosphere are mediocre… no not mediocre… bad just bad The “children” I had which was a small Cornish hen, was like eating a block of salt The server was inattentive and forgetful Overpriced Terrible food Left disappointed and hungry Please listen to me and save your money. I’m sure there is a diner close by that serves better food
Wonderful vibes in the restaurant.
Service was great. Food was really great, from appetizers to entrees to dessert. Drinks were on point too.
Some of the best food I’ve ever had!
The Stissing House is one of the best restaurants I’ve eaten at. Firstly, the interior is quite nice. It is candlelit, and has a very homey feel with a living room and fire. The restaurant is unique, in that all the food is cooked with wood fired ovens. The food is excellent. So flavorful and tasty. They had a wood roasted pheasant special that was amazing. We also had the Snowdance chicken with rosemary potatoes that was delicious as well. This restaurant is a great experience, but is very expensive. A dinner for four people with drinks costs around $400. So if you’re willing to spend money on this restaurant, I’d highly recommend trying it.
Amazing vibes, great food, very helpful and friendly staff.
Stissing house is a must-visit.
Had dinner at Stissing House last night with 2 friends.
Overall, it was wonderful - the atmosphere is warm and comfortable, the staff was pleasant and attentive. The halibut was excellent, according to 2 at our table and the coconut cake was amazing. The green salad is more than enough for 4 people. But there was one significant disappointment. My friend and I shared the ribeye - for $95 it should have melted in our mouths. But instead it was tough - tough to cut and tough to chew, with a fair amount of gristle. I don't know if that is typical for their ribeye - could be it was just a bad night. We should have sent it back - not sure why we didn't. Maybe because we were having a really nice evening and didn't want to spoil it. I would definitely recommend Stissing house, but I would say either avoid the ribeye or if it's tough, send it back. We regret that we didn't both because it would have provided feedback to the chef and because we might have gotten a (much) better steak.
The space was beautiful and so so cozy.
The food was good, not extremely memorable as I'm writing this 2 months after visiting, but I remember generally having a nice time. Despite not really remembering what we ate I would go back.
Historic Hudson Valley building with warm colonial
Historic Hudson Valley building with warm colonial architecture but yet chic style ambiance. Service was excellent and welcoming. I had the halibut in a light clam sauce that was delicious. Best restaurant in the area and close to Rhinebeck.
We've had two excellent meals at Stissing House this year.
Everything about the place is great - unique setting, great cocktails, menu where you can choose anything and it'll be good, good service. Looking forward to going back again soon.
TERRIBLE - The building is lovely and the candles and fireplaces are nice touch BUT-
The building is lovely and the candles and fireplaces are nice touch BUT- My issue is that this is kind of a place for adults and not crying babies which there seemed to be alot of, We specifically requested a quiet table for 5pm booking - the table was fine until a large party with screaming children was seated in the same small room We asked to move our table and were then unceremoniously seated in the center table in the bar area with a speaker directly overhead blasting music so loud we could not have a conversation, While I love music- sometimes in a romantic looking candlelit restaurant- it is nice not to have to scream to have a conversation, We took the food to go. So bottom line- it seemed there were more then the usual amount of small children and infants at this restaurant- I think it is encouraged by the owner which is perfectly fine- but diners paying $300 for a special meal should be advised on this in advance- so beware. I did see a pizza place across the street that looked great- the odd thing was that there we no kids there
Incredible atmosphere, but the food was not quite as good
Incredible atmosphere, but the food was not quite as good as it could have been. Yes, the beets were amazing and the spices were very good - the presentation was perfect, but there was something missing - a touch of citrus? A nicely aged vinegar. If you go, you might want to ask for something on the side. The dish, while good, could be so much better. For the main course, I ordered a wood fired halibut which was served with some small bits of roasted root vegetables and fresh herbs with a lovely dressing - here the issue was the cooking. Three people at my table ordered the halibut and said it was over cooked. Very disappointing. Finally, sticky toffee Sundae. I have had this dessert, perhaps, too many times and it requires the base to be hot - it wasn't the flavors were spot on, but...despite all of that we had a lovely time and loved having a fire place adjacent to our table. Service was great.
An inconsistent and costly experience
The flavors in a beet/peach salad and a fish entree were very nice, and the service was truly professional. Other than that, not worth the premium price tag. Stay away from the steak, especially ... the grass-fed ribeye at nearly $100 was subpar to any NYC steakhouse because 1.) too lean and tasteless and 2.) the kitchen's idea of medium rare seems to be seared on the outside and cold/rare on the inside. The drinks were fine, though one martini came with an extra, overflow portion while another did not, making the bartender seem inconsistently stingy and leaving the waiter in an awkward position. In terms of ambience, on this night there was plenty of rambunctious kid energy ... which is joyful to some but not to couples looking for a romantic evening.
What a delight.
We really enjoyed our visit. The space is beautiful, historic, cozy and decorated with special touches everywhere, from a gorgeous floral arrangements with massive dahlias to a big bowl of peanuts in a sitting room to a luscious heap of whipped butter under a glass dome ready for bread service. There was a wood fire crackling in the open kitchen and a massive coconut cake on the counter casually topped with mounds of fluffy icing. Simple beauty everywhere. We were warmly greeted by the host and brought to our table right away. Our server was professional and friendly and we were comfortable and well cared for throughout the evening. We had oysters and chips to start which were just perfect. The homemade chips were perfectly crisp with just the right amount of salt & vinegar. We shared a Summer salad with heirloom tomatoes, peaches and a scoop of soft, local goat cheese which was perfect for early September when we visited. For entrees we shared the Mahi Mahi w fennel and the heritage pork chop which was beautifully charred over the wood fire and served with Wild Hive Farm grits and greens. Both were delicious. We finished with a plum crisp for two with sour cream ice cream which was lovely. The bar looked super cozy, comfortable and welcoming. There were a few rooms that could be reserved for private parties. We'd definitely come back here again and feel like it's a place we'd like to take visiting guests as well. Very special.
Terrible service and very unprofessional.
Waitress inattentive. Was not told at booking the reservation that the table for seven had a time limit. And we were asked to leave as another party was waiting for the table. Told a couple of my quests we had to leave but we could go to the bar. Shocking and unprofessional.
Good Food and Very Popular, But
James Beard nominated as one of the 6 or 7 best restaurants in the Hudson Valley, and some of their plates to rise to that wow level. But not all, we had al la carte salad which consisted of a few slices of mushroom atop some nice lettuce leaves accompanied by a good size piece of goat cheese shaped in the form of an egg. At $22 and with the bread arriving some time later it was quite what was hoped for. Dining areas are attractive enough, but on the crowded side with noise level high enough to have to work at conversation. Service is good, but on the night we were there the place was full and just a bit short on staff to be able to keep up. As the restaurant was full, so was the unpaved parking lot which had ots of muddy pot holes that were left wet after the rain. Arrival and departure don't quite feel consistent the entree prices that run north of 40.

It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
