Sumiao Hunan Kitchen Boston Reviews from The Last Year
Not bad, but not worth a return visit
I hoped for better. The food was at times spicy, yet simultaneously lacking in flavor. I will give them credit. I had never had Impossible Chicken nuggets--an interesting experiment. Just tasted exactly like the real thing. But frankly, I was hoping for something better than chicken nuggets, and there was not much that was. The fried rice was as bland as could be with almost no flavor--and it seemed to be based on frozen mixed vegetables. Most other dishes were not much better. Nothing was awful. And the service was good. But I hoped for better. On the plus side, it was near Toscanini's, so the evening was saved.
The food here is amazing .
. I had the okra ( it was my first time trying okra and it was super tasty ). I had the beef and broccoli, rice noodles, spicy green beans, hot and sour soup. I didn't like the hot and sour soup it was more on the sour side than anything.. I took 1 spoonful and I just couldn't continue.. everything else was delicious. The ambiance is very nice definitely a great place for a night out or with a group too.

Favorite Chinese food ever! Far more to offer than our Americanized standards. Favorite dishes: mala duck, yellow river beef, lava fish, popcorn chicken.
Absolutely delicious.
One of my favorite restaurants in Boston. We definitely recommend the cold noodles and fried tofu. Will definitely come back to try more. Ambience and service were also great. Cocktails are fine but not a highlight. Next time, we will try their house tea.
Amazing variety of salads, vegetarian , seafood and chicken.
The service was really top notch in terms of speed, variety and quality of food. And spiciness quotient was definitely top notch. Definitely coming in again.
All stars for the amazing service provided by Bernadette.
She's funny, kind, caring and provides the best service! The food is of good quality and above average in taste. Location and ambiance is great!

We got several items for takeout, and the cons dominate the pros. The Changso Flavored Chicken was made by chopping up the carcass of the bird, rather than first removing the meat from the bone. The result was that about 30% of the morsels had bone shards or ribs or parts of the spinal column in them. The main eating experience was using fingers and tongue to remove the pieces of bone Also, the food is much more expensive than at two other good Chinese restaurants in the area. And the restaurant added thirty cents for the takeout bag! That is nickel and dime irritation. On the pro side, the egg and vegetable noodle dish was tasty. And the restaurant uses pressed paper boxes, rather than plastic, as containers. The food can be reheated in the microwave without transfer, and is better for one's health and for the environment.

Wow! How did I miss this spot? I chase great Asian food all over the boston area. Been to many spots in Quincy, Malden, Cambridge, Allston, Chinatown and lots more. I visited Sumiao for my first time today for lunch. Ordered way too much with a friend. Could not find a weak-link. Dumps, eggplant, wood ear, garlic calamari, beef on fire. Each dish was distinct and truly Hunan. The service we received from Bernadette was the same as the food: outstanding. I can't wait to go back for dinner with friends so we can order more!

We came here as walk-ins on a Saturday night and they were able to seat us immediately at the bar or communal table. We chose to sit at the bar, but the communal table looked well spaced out enough that it would have also been cute and enjoyable. Flavors and cooking style were tasty and authentic, but there was a big discrepancy in portion sizes between dishes. We got a decent size for our appetizers (mala duck and cold bean curd), but our vegetable dish of eggplant and string beans was much smaller than we are used to the dish being at Chinese food restaurants. Overall, the prices are on the higher end as well ($12-16 for appetizers and $20-40 for main dishes), but that's pretty inline with other nearby restaurants in Kendall Square. Our favorite dishes of the night were the mala duck and eggplant and string bean. Both were flavorful and delicious so would definitely get again. The cold shredded bean curd wasn't as flavorful as we would have liked. (Maybe our fault for requesting mild, but this dish could have used some soy sauce). Would skip. The lava fish and sweet tofu pudding were both tender and light and enjoyable, but not a must have again. Overall, the service was good and attentive, the decor was new and modern, and the food was yummy but a bit pricey. I would come here again to try some more dishes, hopefully ones on the better side of the price to portion size ratio.
We saw this restaurant featured on the New York Times list
We saw this restaurant featured on the New York Times list of 25 Best Restaurants in Boston Right Now and I had to try it out! We got the "Chef Zhang's fried rice noodles" which comes with egg, chive, sliced cabbage, garlic, chili powder, pickled bean & "shrimp fried rice" which comes with shrimp, egg, pea, carrot. They created a welcoming atmosphere for us and the ambiance at the bar was really pleasant!

It was our first time visiting Sumiao and we'll definitely be back! Our server, Gin, was so friendly and gave great recommendations. The entire staff was attentive as our water glasses never went dry. For food, we had the purple yam bao, spicy cauliflower, fried tofu with chive, and the crispy duck - all dishes we would gladly order again. Thanks for the recs, Gin!!
Great Family Visit with Authentic Hunan Cuisine
My nephew who lives in the Boston area suggested this place for a family dinner. It did not disappoint. I always measure the authenticity of a Chinese restaurant by the demographics of the clientele. In a large dining room only two table had non-East Asian diners! The menu is extensive, the service prompt, and friendly and the restaurant spotless. The dumplings were great as were the steamed buns. The buns were unusual as they were stuffed with a meatball. The General Tso's chcken was perfect as was the beef and vegetables. The winter melon and squid plus lamb were new to me and clearly authentic.
Should try this Chinese Restaurant when you visit Boston.
The place looks very nicely decorated and clean. Foods were delicious, too bad they did not have my all time fav “salt & pepper squid”. Service was good too.
The people running this restaurant and the servers were delightful. The food is delicious and we really liked every dish
It all began with an incredible professional young lady from Vietnam who was very patient, knowledgeable and caring. There were six of us, four adults and two children, 6 and 9 years old. She helped us select terrific options. We shared all our dishes except our 9 year old who is a strict vegetarian. He did share some of our vegetable dishes. The first selection was the okra dish. Actually the best okra that I ever had, and Love okra. We enjoyed the sweet sticky rice cake. It had osmanthus rice cake. Vegetarian had the pickled bean and impossible burger, garlic and fresno pepper. Next the Yellow river beef. Thinly sliced and marbled beef, white beech mushroom, pickled cabbage, duo jiao banana pepper. Followed by ginger and scallion chicken, consisting of ginger, garlic, green pepper, scallion and soy sauce. Chinese broccoli with sliced green bell pepper, scallion, ginger and seasoned soy sauce. Sizzling whole Tilapia fish on foil. Onion red pepper, ginger, oyster sauce and soy sauce. It was cooked perfectly moist and the accompaniments worked wonderfully with it. Umami shrimp egg tofu. It was Japanese egg tofu. The shrimp could have larger but the flavor was delicious. The desserts were Amazing. Probably the best desserts in a Chinese restaurant that I have ever had. The whole meal though it was Hunan spicy was easy to eat and not to dry spicy. The environment was really nice to enjoy the meal and the family. We had a round table for the six of us. We had a really beautiful sake, enjoyed the drinkers amongst us. I can’t wait to come back to Boston ton eat here again. I hope that Ha will still be working there. I did post pictures of the dishes that we had. Next time I want to order the special 48 hour in advance lobster and crab dishes. I forgot to do that this time.
Decadence
This is the message I sent to management. Polite reply was received. Baiscally defending their pricing. Fair for me "I was an evangelist of Sumiao since they opened: led there firstly by our Chinese-born friend JinJing. I considered it one of the top 3 Chinese places in town Food constantly good and great, friendly service. During last visit I found: 1) Food remains good to great 2) service is superb (give XXX a raise) 3) price became obscene. While the lunch special is fairly priced, paying $20 for fried rice with minuscule shrimps, $16 for a (good) tea which I usually get for free (less good tho) in any Chinese restaurant in the world, and finally $ .30 for the takeout bag is simply offensive. Any business has the right to set the prices at the level they prefer: I have the right to bring my business away"
Delicious and authentic
Fantastic and authentic food with great service. I could come back over and over and never have the same thing twice. A fantastic meal!
REAL Chinese cuisine
Excellent food AND excellent (attentive) service (Jeffrey did a great job). We had a variety of items (including lotus root, which I’ve never had!) and all was so delicious with an excellent presentation. Nice atmosphere as well.

Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.

Can come from a lot of places, people who don't want to get charged their cancellation fee or people who just have them and cant go.

almost all restaurants aren't affiliated with AT and I'm guessing it's mostly people wanting to not pay cancellation fees.
