The best sushi I have experienced prior to this was
The best sushi I have experienced prior to this was Sugarfish by Nozawa. It was delicious but it was Burger King compared to the sushi we had last night. Here's the rundown- As everyone has stated, get there 20 minutes early and enjoy the welcome cocktail in their lounge. It is worth it and gets you nice and primed for your dinner. The receptionist will get your name and it'll be written on your place setting since there is assigned seating. If you are planning on doing a sake pairing DO NOT DRINK PRIOR. I say this because we went to Intero for some drinks and... I did not need the extra alcohol. The pours are generous, every sake was delicious and unfortunately you will want to drink all of it so you will definitely be toasty toasty by the time you leave. The sparkling sake was the surprise hit for me and I was so impressed I had it twice. I just feel bad for the couple next to us because we were on a cloud 9 buzz and I don't think they were quite there yet. Every person from the Sushi Bar ATX staff was so kind and welcoming from the moment we arrived till the moment we left. Service was AMAZING. Because there is limited seating for 10 people your experience will be special and your every need is catered to. You have the option for 3 luxurious add ons of truffle, caviar, and foie gras. I went for the truffle and caviar and it did not disappoint. Towards the end of your meal you will also get another option to add on and taste a unique creation from each sushi chef, just get it! You're already spending a ton of money, might as well get the full experience. I don't know how they pack so much flavor into each bite, my mind was blown and I felt like I was stumbling trying to describe what I was tasting because there were so many layers of flavor every single time. Truly exceptional. The price for both of us was $720 tax and 22% tip included, keep in mind we had already paid $50 per person for our reservation so technically it's $820. We were surprised by the bill but... Was it worth it? Well, the most expensive meal I had prior to this was $400 at Chi Spacca. This was a lot more but I have never experienced this level of food or service before. If you have the means to do it I say go for it, you will not be disappointed. Will I be doing this again? For an occasion that is special enough to justify the cost... yes, I would love to. Thank you to the Sushi Bar ATX team, you made my birthday special and one I'll never forget.
Be the first to ReplySushi Bar is an absolute delight.
We popped in for a quick dinner and were very impressed with both the quality of the food and the speed of service. The wasabi they use with the sushi - it's fresh, fibrous and so flavorsome. Prices are also very reasonable. We'll be back for sure. Authentic Japanese.
Be the first to ReplyHonestly a little hard to articulate how amazing this place
Honestly a little hard to articulate how amazing this place is. If you're looking for a unique intimate sushi experience, this is well worth the cost. The team does such a great job at guiding you through the menu, every single bit is so unique and layered with mouth watering flavor. We went with the menu, no add on's during our first visit but we will be sure to try them on the next. Shout out to all of the staff for serving what I consider the best meal I've ever had, hands down. Can't wait to be back!
Be the first to ReplyOur visit to Omakase at Sushi Bar ATX for a birthday
Our visit to Omakase at Sushi Bar ATX for a birthday celebration was nothing short of amazing. The sushi bites were not only delightful but also creative and incredibly tasty. The trio of chefs who prepared our bites were not only informative but also added a lot of fun to the experience. The room was lively and interactive, which added to the overall enjoyment. Some pro tips: - There is a small parking lot in the back, so keep an eye out for it. - Arriving 20 minutes early allows you to enjoy their welcome cocktail, which is a nice touch. - They also offer delicious unlimited sunomono, which they combine with their pickled ginger. - Make sure to save room for dessert, as they serve a delicious one along with tea at the end of the meal. The only downside to our experience was the host who was on the phone when we arrived and seemed annoyed by the interruption of us checking in, not welcoming when we arrived nor when we left. However, this did not detract from the overall enjoyment of the evening. The unagi served with the flaming bone marrow was the showstopper of the night, but watching the three chefs with their well-choreographed sushi-making moves was also incredibly entertaining. Overall, a fantastic experience that I would highly recommend.

What a GEM! My husband took me on a surprise date so I had no idea where we were going. We are both sushi lovers and I have to say WOW! First off, the ambiance was so amazing. You walk into an unassuming but very charming entry kindly greeted by the host. We waited on the other side of the curtain which lead to the chef's table and it felt mysterious and exciting like we were about to enter a room at the Magic Castle in Hollywood (if you've ever been). The Food: Every bite melted in your mouth. The presentation, the flavors and quality were all outstanding. We had 17 courses and it was more than enough. Although, because of the unique experience, I could've stayed for the next seating just because it was such a pleasant experience and the sushi chefs were so lovely. This was the best sushi omakase experience in Austin hands down :) I'll be back, OFTEN Oh and, you are welcomed with a welcome cocktail 20 minutes before your reservation and served in their lovely lounge. My husband and I missed it because of Austin traffic unfortunately. So be sure to plan ahead and get there 20 mins early!
Be the first to ReplyMy boyfriend made us this reservation months ago to
My boyfriend made us this reservation months ago to celebrate me running the Austin half marathon (my first ever!) and let me tell you - this was the perfect way to culminate such a memorable weekend. Bento Picnic used to be in this space and I didn't realize it closed. It was also my first omakase experience and it was simply wonderful. From the moment we walked in and were welcomed to the lounge area with a grapefruit based cocktail! We met another couple from Florida that also ran the full and half marathon (Hi RJ and Amanda!), we sat next to each other and hit it off. Everyone in the room was so friendly, chatty and it felt so intimate yet relaxed atmosphere. Full house on a Monday. The food was glorious - such unique flavors and every bite was a new wave of taste. My boyfriend got the sake pairing and the pours were GENEROUS, with a detailed description of each. The service was superb - the chefs, our drink specialist, they were so happy to have us all. It was great energy. Perfect amount of interaction. There was one more group after us and our omakase ended a bit early so the chefs asked if we wanted to try out two of their own creations - everyone said YES. This was right before dessert. I thought this was such a special touch. The entire experience was paced beautifully. What a way to recover from the half marathon...
Be the first to ReplyThe food, service and ambiance are top notch.
This is the best omakase I've ever had in USA, actually, even the omakase where I spent $300 on in Tokyo was not as good. It is rare to go to an omakase where I enjoyed every single dishes, and this is one of them. They're so good, I would even consider brining my kids to let them experience truly good omakase.
Be the first to ReplyI'd say overall this was a very fun and memorable omakase
I'd say overall this was a very fun and memorable omakase experience. The sushi really was wonderful, and while I'm usually into very basic nigiri, I enjoyed the chefs creative take and the interesting flavor profiles they created. I lived on the west coast for many years, and my usual sushi spot is the amazing hole in the wall that doesn't look like much but delivers. This place is pretty much the opposite of that: as soon as we walked in we could tell it would be fancy and bespoke and expensive, and it was all these things, but regardless, the sushi was wonderful. Now sushi is never cheap, and I've had a handful of other omakase experiences that were comparable in price and maybe not quite as good. I've had sushi that was this good for a fraction of the price, although not in Austin, but I've been away for awhile and there are probably some new gems waiting to be discovered. I definitely muttered an expletive when I saw the bill, but for a very special occasion (like an anniversary, engagement, etc) it's worth it. My husband and I enjoyed not making any decisions and having food handed to us like we were babies since there were not any chopsticks. The service was really great and we had fun chatting with all the chefs and servers. Our reservation was the last sitting and we didn't feel at all rushed, which others have mentioned. We had the basic omakase and we both got the basic sake pairing. Just a warning - the sake pours were HUGE! I was expecting the pairings to be in tiny little cups, but these pours were 3x that. The sparkling sake was soooo good, I've never had anything like it. Needless to say, we were both a little toasted when we left. I've seen others say the opposite, so was it because of our late night reservation? Or do Texans just expect huge sake pours? We may never know, and because of the price point, I'm not sure we'll ever return. But no regrets here - it was the closest dining experience I've ever had to that movie The Restaurant, except the only ones that died were the fish.
Be the first to ReplyI rarely give 5 stars as it's reserved for only the best of
I rarely give 5 stars as it's reserved for only the best of the best in book. This is not only the best Sushi restaurant, it's the best meal I've had in Austin. The care and flavor profiles the chefs bring to each bite can only be experienced in person. Word won't do it justice. The quality of the food, the intimate environment and the overall wow factor make this a must try if you love food and love sushi.
Be the first to ReplyFood and service were excellent.
Yes, its VERY expensive, but an unbelievable omakase experience. The space is very cool, and the banter with the chef's very enjoyable.

Sushi bar is by far where I had the best meal in 2023! If you are a sushi lover like myself then this is the place for you. The whole experience from beginning to end was so well thought out. They start you off with a welcome drink that you take into the waiting area. After which you are guided to a small room with only 10 seats in a chef's table vibe. We got to see how each nigiri was made and I loved how they explained what we were eating and how we should eat it. I especially loved how they were able to accommodate my shellfish allergy by substituting so they get 5 stars in my book. Definitely a special occasion type of experience but so very worth it!

Amazing restaurant with a very unique and personal experience. High quality sushi and service. A great experience all around.
Be the first to ReplyEastside omakase spot with more modern, fusion twists on
Eastside omakase spot with more modern, fusion twists on sushi.Omakase reservations in Austin are always a hot commodity, and when my friend and her partner couldn't make their reservation, I gladly accepted their spots and brought my coworker. As a bit of a preamble, I've been to many similar concepts (both in and out of Austin), and my rating reflects how this group stacks up relative to others in the area after considering many different factors. For the record: it's hard to go wrong with omakase, and I have not been to an omakase restaurant in Austin that isn't a great experience. This spot is located in Bento Picnic--a Japanese spot located on E Cesar Chavez. Upon entering and checking in with the host, we were escorted to the bar area of Bento Picnic and were offered signature cocktails to enjoy while we waited to be seated for dinner. Eventually we were seated in preassigned seats along the sushi bar and the experience was underway. I opted for the optional courses and the additional special toppings for several of the servings, which were an added cost.Throughout the evening, the offerings here used traditional nigiri as a template and then used different less-traditional ingredients to add a modern/fusion take. As with most fusion omakase, some of these inventions were better than others--however, each course was at least "very tasty," with a few being truly outstanding. As is the case with omakase, the group you are seated with can determine your experience--as well as your interactions with the chef(s)--and this was a really fun night with some really nice folks. Overall, this was a really great experience. So with that, why I am giving this place only 4 stars? As I mentioned previously, I couldn't help but benchmark this place to other top omakase spots in the city and I would say that overall it stacks up above average against the stiff competition. Couple that with a bill that was notably higher than the other options (including a few I personally prefer) and you get 4 stars. If the ending bill were a bit more in line with other spots around town, I'd give it 5 stars easily.
Be the first to ReplyOur first time here and agree with the hype.
An experience you can't get many places, love the speakeasy vibe and "behind the door" action! The chefs are wonderful and knowledgeable, all rolls presented are briefly introduced with their ingredients and what part of the world the ingredients come from. We opted for the Reserve Sake Pairing, 5 full glasses! Arrive 20 min before your scheduled seating and enjoy a welcome cocktail
Be the first to ReplyWe have been anticipating this dining experience since we
We have been anticipating this dining experience since we made our reservations several weeks ago and it didn't disappoint! It's almost like a little speakeasy just to find the place. It's located behind a bento box café. There is really on signage and you just have to know where to enter. If you didn't know already, reservations are a must. But don't be dismayed if you have to wait several weeks as we did; it will be worth the wait.Arrive on time is what they say, however, many in the group we ate with arrived quite late for the seating time. They served us a "special drink" which we never found out what exactly it was. It's not something I would ever intentionally order and I'm guessing it was something possibly to prepare your palate? Before you enter the dining room, you are given a brief introduction as to how the evening is expected to go. When you enter, it's a sushi bar for ten and each seat has the name of the guest dining that evening. It's quite intimate. It's not too dark inside and the music playing was just at the right level. One of the chef's starts off by introducing the team; three chef's and a server to handle drink orders. Once the drinks have been delivered and you freshen up with the hot towel, the gastronomic event commences. The sushi you will be eating is displayed on the wall behind the chef's in the order you will receive it. Every receives the same piece of sushi at the same time and then the chef will explain everything from the region the seafood came from to all the different toppings they added anything from shaved truffles to caviar. The first piece of sushi they literally place in your hand and the rest is set upon a small place for you to pick up by hand. Each piece is just the right size to eat in one bite (the way it is intended to be eaten). It's an understatement to say this was some of the freshest sushi I have ever experienced but they were more like pieces of art in both the presentation and little extra flavorings that were added to each piece. Some pieces of sushi were so incredibly fresh and delicious, they literally just melt away in your mouth. This dining experience is like an orchestra it runs so perfectly. They chef's are constantly preparing each different serving of sushi. Although there are three of them and we had a full table, everyone seemed to get their sushi at the exact same moment like it was synchronized. We never felt rushed to prepare for the next serving. There was plenty of time to savor what you had just eaten and then have a little ginger or cucumber to cleanse your palate for the next serving. I never felt rushed, nor did I feel like I was waiting on the next course. The timing was exquisite! And the chef's are great people who are quite conversationalists. A truly enjoyable evening.I have only had omakase when in Japan but this was one of my top five dining experiences of my life! It is a bit of a wait to get a reservation, but once you have been here, you will realize that wait was well worth it. The food, the ambiance and the service, were all some of the best I have ever experienced and there is no question we will be back. Regarding the price... it's on par for what you would expect for a dining experience such as this. You might find omakase "cheaper" but not at this quality. And for those who complained about the size of the portions, this is a fine dining experience and when you are sampling sixteen different servings, these are the correct size. Anything larger and you would become too full and miss out on the experience. We cannot wait to reserve our next dinner here!
Be the first to ReplySushi Bar ATX is more than just a place to have dinner -it
Sushi Bar ATX is more than just a place to have dinner -it is a total dining experience that is best shared with 9 of your best friends. From the moment you figure out you're in the right place and the host hands you a melon spritz cocktail to the final piece of sushi placed lovingly in front of you, this is a singular dining experience. There is nothing like it in Austin and if you are lucky enough to get a reservation then consider yourself blessed by the sushi gods and enjoy this two hour ride.
Be the first to ReplyIf you're lucky enough to get a reservation here, then
If you're lucky enough to get a reservation here, then you're in for one of the best sushi experiences in Austin and possibly all of Texas. This place is tucked away with no sign. It's located in the back of Bento Picnic. Once you enter, you'll check in at the back of the restaurant and you'll get a complimentary beverage. The staff and service is top notch and you immediately feel like a VIP. Before you arrive, you will have the opportunity to let the staff know any dietary preferences you have. Once it's time to be seated, you'll be ushered into an intimate room in the back that seats 10 people. The intimate setting also allows you to get to strike up conversation with your neighbors and adds to the overall experience as well. Just don't be one of those people that talk while the chefs are trying to introduce their next piece!I won't go into too many specifics of the food as it changes night to night and part of the experience is being surprised by the meal. To sum it up though, you'll get 16 bites of nigiri and then at the end they may offer some extra pieces for a price if there's time. It is obvious that the chefs put in an incredible amount of thought and care into each piece of fish offered. The pieces are not large so if you have an appetite, don't expect to leave stuffed. The joy in Sushi Bar really comes from experiencing the creative ways that the chefs prepare your meal. I found myself constantly surprised at the variety of different flavor profiles in each bite that should not work but simply do. Also, If you're offered any additions with your meal, take them! This is not a cheap experience. Even without the alcohol pairing, you can expect likely over $300 per person. If you're prepared to pay for it though, then you're definitely in for a memorable night that you won't regret.
Be the first to ReplyHands down the best sushi we've had.
Each new bite was so exciting. The eel and toro were out of this world. It's such a unique experience and the chefs are great to talk to. It was about $400 pp with the optional wine pairing (which I recommend). We opted out of the add ons. I think they added truffle and caviar to certain bites. I didn't feel like we missed out. However, I highly recommend doing the 3 additional pieces at the end. The last bite was the best of the night. And the dessert - just wow. I think if you know what you are getting into price wise and are okay with paying that for 17-20 sushi bites, you absolutely will not be disappointed!

Hands down the best meal in Austin! If you were lucky enough to get a reservation here, it's the best sushi you'll have. Amazing service in every bite. You always want way more ha ha.
Be the first to ReplyThis is far more than a meal, it's an experience.
10 people sit at the sushi bar in three seatings per night. Reservations are a must as there are no walk-ins available. There are no menus only a 17 course omakase experience with menus thst apparently vary nightly depending on what ingredients are available. Two chefs prepare each bite in front of you explaining the ingredients and preparation. Each bite was near sushi perfection for me. Traditional fish was served nigiri style with creative complimentary ingredients added for non-traditional flavors. Flavors became richer and more intense as the evening went on. We shared the premium wine pairing which was perfectly matched to the fish and featured a number of very unique labels. I can't say enough good things about the meal. But buyer beware it isn't cheap. Once we added a few bites at the end and shared the wine pairing it was very expensive, but it was absolutely worth it! We reserved the final seating of the night which gave us extra time at the end of the meal to relax and chat with the sushi chefs and awesome somellier. Reservations open on the first of the previous month. I recommend making them as early as possible.
Be the first to ReplyHard restaurant to get a seat in.
Worth the trouble. The place could use a better sign and get a little more organized. Small place so if someone is talking loud (maybe drinking too much) it can disturb your experience. Besides that.....the food is incredible! Its the best sushi meal I have ever had. I like the non traditional dishes. I thought the portions of fish were a good size. One fish was topped with a dash of mole sauce. The dessert was very tasty. I would go back again for sure
Be the first to ReplyThere was a lot left to be desired here.
The shortcomings made the higher price tag unjustifiable, unfortunately. The ambiance was quite nice but the seating was tight, the chefs (admittedly) had very little sushi experience, and the bites were not as good as other places in the city. The pre-dinner cocktail was awkward as it was seemingly unexpected by them and they put us in the cafe attached to the restaurant. Everyone enters and exits the small space through the same cramped area, giving a very impersonal and factory-like experience. It felt sloppily thrown together taking advantage of Austin's more elite-like customers to slap some fish on a plate and forget about the actual experience quality. Would sooner go to Uchi happy hour any day.
Be the first to ReplyHonestly, I was pretty disappointed.
I have been to a lot of omakase spots and am a huge sushi fanatic, but for the price I paid for Sushi Bar, I expected a lot more. There are also slightly cheaper omakase options in Austin that are way better. Service is good, don't get me wrong. The chefs are also great to chat with, but the sushi itself is pretty subpar for the expectation and hype they're creating. The sushi pieces themselves are small, and this isn't a traditional omakase experience. The chefs throw in their little twists on some pieces, but for those pieces, I wish they hadn't. I liked the more traditional take, and adding things like bone marrow seemed too much. Sushi will always be sushi, which means it'll be good. However, the high price point, less traditional take on an omakase experience, and the small pieces will deter me from wanting to make another visit.

This is a very pricey meal but worth every cent. We did the add ons of caviar + truffles and it was AMAZING. Would not recommend this place enough.
