Sushi by M New York Reviews from The Last Year
Everyone was so sweet here and the fish was great quality!
Everyone was so sweet here and the fish was great quality! We were running late and the when we texted the owner he was so nice and understanding. Definitely support them!
This restaurant was recommended by a friend and I did see
This restaurant was recommended by a friend and I did see it appear on many omakase lists on tiktok and online. My boyfriend and I decided to go for a lunch reservation because they offer the same menu throughout the day and we had prior arrangements for later on in the day. Upon entering the restaurant, we were greeted by a very friendly hostess who showed us to our seats at the counter and introduced us to the menu. We had already decided to go for the $100 17-course omakase since we did want to feel full. We had Chef Hiro, who was extremely friendly and made conversation with us throughout the lunch. He explained each piece to us and told us his favorite cuts of fish. Our favorite courses would have to be chutoro with truffle, striped jack with monkfish liver, toro sturgeon caviar, and A5 wagyu with uni and foie gras. Our hostess came over and gave us a thorough powerpoint presentation with pictures of their specials along with details of what is in each piece. It would be great if they had this printed out with detail of the ingredients because it was very overwhelming to remember what each piece has (there are over 10 specials). All of them looked great, but we decided to each get a big mac which had two layers of uni with two layers of A5 wagyu ($25 each). The restaurant looked clean and welcoming, I like the use of Clase Azul bottles as decor, since it is my favorite tequila. I would definitely visit the restaurant again, maybe during dinner time. Everyone was friendly and welcoming, the manager and hostess came over to check up on us multiple times. Overall, it was a memorable omakase experience that I would recommend.
The food was to die for.
The service was incredible. They are so kind and welcome! This is my new favorite restaurant ever! 10/10
Sushi by M leans towards the experimental side for Omakase.
While the Omakase menu (we got the $100 set for 2 apps, 15 pieces, and 1 hand roll) features traditional pieces (just the nigiri with wasabi), there were also some very flavor packed items with a mix of stand out ingredients, like toro with caviar or wagyu beef with uni. What I like most about this place is just the right amount of wasabi they put on each piece. It adds a flavor component distinguishable from the key ingredients and hits your nose right. As for the sushi quality, I thought the omakase selection was good overall but not mind blowing. Small and explosive flavors rather than clean and refreshing attributed to traditional omakase. I came here to celebrate my birthday and they gave a free sashimi platter that was just as delicious as the menu and a very great gesture. This is overall good quality for a lot of items given the price point. My only complaint is that the sushi bar seating was very bundled together, not much personal space and arm room. Solid omakase otherwise with friendly service and generosity.
Ok! Let's go with 17 different kinds plus a surprise
Ok! Let's go with 17 different kinds plus a surprise birthday treat (more sashimi topped with a little candle) and cheeseburger sushi. Total cost was about $100 each plus al carte (cheeseburger, drinks, etc) Kumamoto Oyster + Ikura - very flavorful as ikura burst to bring extra flavor out after oyster taste. Hamachi (YELLOWTAIL) - great warm up to many tasting coming up! Good taste as hamachi tasted very fresh! Kanpachi - a tease of fish type with a hint of spiciness but it wasn't so spicy. It did elevate the taste of fish itself! Akamizuke (tuna) - it bought me back to Hawaii where ahi tastes amazing and fresh. I was impressed as it is doable in NYC! bai (red snapper) - white meat fish and it was impressive than I expected. Hard to say what sauce the sushi chef used but it blends so well with this! Chu Toro w/ Truffle - very rich and flavorful in a bite! This chu toro just melts in your mouth like butter! Truffle is a great addition! Botan Ebi (spotted prawn) - typical but tastes great with their touch of soy sauce on it. Shiro Ebi w/ Sturgeon Caviar - can't say more than this... great use of shrimp topped with caviar to elevate the palate! Japanese Seasonal Fish - forgot what was it but it was great as the chef delivered it on the plate. It depends on season for what type of fish. Hotate (Scallop) - beautifully presented and cut for more flavor to be steeped in and topped with a little of some kind of black salt. Shima Aji - seared and smoky monkfish liver topped on either yellow fish or hamachi sashimi which was amazing!!! King Salmon (New Zealand salmon) - good ol' salmon, tasted fresh topped with a refreshing taste of some light sauce (lemony?). Hokkaido Uni - it just melts in your mouth like butter, which was very good! It means uni was very fresh! It wasn't chewy or fishy. Toro Caviar - amazing like butter melting in your mouth then topped with caviar swirling in as you taste all. Surely a firework in mouth! Of course toro was seared a bit which makes it very delicious! Albacore Tuna - seared tuna topped with a little of spicy sauce. Delicious as well! Wagyu Beef with Uni & Foie Gras - interesting combination but yet good tasting after many great tastes! Bbq Eel Avocado - smokiness and tasteful! Cheeseburger - great combination of sashimi variety (variety of fish, caviar, uni) and a piece of Japanese cheesecake! I kid you not, it may come off weird but it was amazing as you taste all in one bite! Ambiance was so nice. The staff all were very hospitality and accommodating to our foodie adventure. I'd come back to stretch my buck for more sushi courses!
this place is such a disappointment.
I came here on a whim for a dinner meeting. I ordered the 2nd omakase option on the menu... the fish was flavorless, dried out and the rice was definitely old. The pieces also smaller than they should've been. The service was good, the people were nice but bad food. Unfortunately I will not be giving this place a second chance, theres no coming back from how bad it was. Can't forget to mention it turned into party at the end of our dinner. Full bar vibes. I don't know how they got it so wrong. I'd rather wait inline for sugarfish.

some pieces like the scallop and hamachi were really good, but some had fusion twists or sauces where I didn't think they belonged, which kind of made me suspect the quality. But I think it might have just been a non traditional choice. for instance, there was a yuzu sauce on the salmon, but I think salmon should be by itself because the fat goes so well with just shoyu. a yuzu sauce would be more fitting on a white fish. but I am a sushi traditionalist. sushi pieces were of the perfect size though !

I had such a great time here! Our chef was really talkative, and it was so lively. I don't like eating omakases where it's completely silent, so I really enjoyed the ambiance. As for the food itself, I LOVED it!! It was such a good deal for the freshness and quality of the food. Our chef really paid attention to what we liked and didn't liked, and gave a little extra to me since he said he enjoyed our reactions to the food. The madai was my favorite piece but the scallops were really sweet to me, too. The flavors were enhanced, not hidden by sauces. The uni was fresh and I loved it! My friends all said they wish they had gotten the higher # course set, so keep that in mind! The smaller set was good but definitely for a smaller appetite

I had the omakase (17 pieces) and the more I have it the more I realize I'm a huge tuna person and love toro! The toro, caviar on the sushi, and the wagyu with uni were my favorites (pictures below). Made a reservation beforehand for dinner and the chefs were extremely friendly and made the experience fun!
Came here without reservation and luckily got seated right
Came here without reservation and luckily got seated right away. This was my first omakase experience. The ambiance was casual, not too formal. I ordered the $100 package. Staff was super friendly and chefs were skilled. But I felt like it was missing something to deserve 5 stars. Perhaps my hype for omakase was too big
Yummy!!!
The place is cozy, nice decor, and very welcoming ambiance. The staff are so nice, very welcoming and friendly. Ling, the manager, was very friendly and helpful. Jay, the sushi chef, prepped all of our sushi and did an amazing job. A nice gentleman with friendly demeanor with such patience. Ling asked if we were celebrating anything and my husband told him my birthday was in two weeks. Upon hearing this, Jay made a delicious sushi cake with a candle for me. He made our visit very special and for him to make such effort meant a lot to me. Thank you Jay and Ling! Even a birthday rap song was played in the background. I love rap songs so it sweeten the mood. Thank you guys! The sushi were excellent! Fresh, excellent and high quality. I highly recommend the Omakase. Worth the price! Simply delicious and excellent service!
The Truth About Sushi By M
Don't walk, RUN - We had the 100 dollar 17 course Omakase. You get one piece each but by the end, you're filled. The chef was outstanding, M was there as well. The hostess Bebe was so much fun. They offered shots of tequila and sake, and who am I to turn down a free drink? The sushi was fresh, wonderfully prepared and absolutely amazing! (several photos attached) The chu toro with truffle... is an orgasm. Absolutely will be back when in NY

I have a notice stating that my bid has been accepted and is awaiting transfer. The reservation is for the 18th, but the “moderator” said he will confirm booking by the 28th. Is this an indicator that I may not have a reservation?

Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
