Extremely Negative Dining Experience
This restaurant is absolutely abysmal at accommodating allergies. I have celiac disorder, and so when I went with the all you can eat menu, there was no indication of what items contained gluten and what items did not. I asked the server if they had a gluten free menu, which they provided me with. It was completely useless, as almost none of the items on the gf menu corresponded to the all you can eat menu. It was actually worse than useless, as it incorrectly listed items as gluten free, such as the spicy tofu soup. When I asked if the rolls being given to us were gluten free or not, the servers provided contradictory information. By that point, I had already ingested gluten containing rolls and subsequently experienced an allergic reaction (at home). I would appreciate the allergy information ahead of time. There are plenty of sushi restaurants in Winnipeg, and for 40$ much better overall dining experiences. Please, please update your menus and do better in the future. The sashimi was fantastic though!

Easy to park at, and on Portage. This restaurant is clean, the food is fresh and there is lots of variety! Instead of sashimi tuna, the is butterfish (my new favourite). Staff is awesome and attentive, food is fast and delicious! It’s a little pricier than an all you can eat chinese/sushi restaurants, but the variety and freshness makes it well worth it. We went Sunday, just after 6PM.
Be the first to ReplyAbundant and delicious meal
Most of Winnipeg eateries were closed this July 1st evening as I arrived in the city, hungry after driving all day W to E. Still I wasn’t going to give up and kept walking Portage Ave, and there it was: Sushi GEN Japanese Cuisine. From the rich and colourful menu I just ordered a Bento Box, on which I feasted that Canada Day evening (still can’t forget the deep fried tofu and vegetable tempura), as well as the next day, in transit again with no opportunity to buy food. Kind service. Highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplyTHE ABSOLUTE WORST
If I was able to rate this restaurant 0 stars, I would have. First of all, the the servers came to check our table with the most irritated faces every single time- keep in mind that my table only consisted of 2 people that behaved accordingly in a restaurant setting. Second thing, I have never ever experienced a service where the server would aggressively “kick out” their customer 2 minutes before the restaurant closes and stated “Well, when are you going to finish? everyone is just waiting on you”. I truly understand that people want to be home, but that is extremely inappropriate to put your personal wants over the satisfaction of your customer. Lastly, I was livid to experience the server once again come to our table and tells us that “We’re closing. So, there’s extra charge for those sushi”- goodness! I almost lost it at this point. How could a restaurant charge customers that are not even done yet just because you’re closing? We came there an hour and a half before it closes, I’m sure we had the right to at least enjoy our meal for more than 30 minutes of receiving it. The cashier even had the audacity to tell us that we should not order a lot next time- WOW! It’s an eat all you can restaurant, therefore we will order ANYTHING that we want since we’re paying money for it. Also, we would have ABSOLUTELY NO issue finishing the order if we weren’t being kicked out. This restaurant is by far the WORST service I ever experienced in my entire life. I would recommended and highly suggest to avoid this restaurant if you’re looking for a great service.
Be the first to Replynice lunch
had lunch on friday - all you can eat sushi lunch. we were surprised that the all you can eat covered the entire menu. This was not a buffet - but order from the menu. pricing was fair, quality was very good, and service was excellent. would recommend Sushi Gen to anybody that loves Japanese food.

Pretty average. Slow service, we waited for a while to be seated. Ordered mixed sets, A and B are ok, Mixed Combo C includes Volcano rolls that are terrible. Like lots of ketchup over rice and salmon skin and tempura bits inside with ketchup again! Ordered beer and then had to ask for beer glasses, the waitress brought glasses with ice. Disappointing.
Be the first to ReplyGood sushi
Went for all you can eat. Menu is limited but the rolls and appetizers were authentic tasting. Enough selection to feel satisfied Very good price per person!
Be the first to ReplyVery good sushi and tempura
I really enjoyed Sushi Gen - ordered it via SkipTheDishes and would definitely order it again. All items were fresh and very good.

So my chopsticks-down favourite in Winnipeg is Sushi Cushi on St. James, but this is the best, reasonably-priced, reliable and fresh downtown option. It is also your best bet if, like me, you occasionally like to sink a boatload of sushi at an all-you-can-eat restaurant. Very nearly the full menu is available with a lunch (smaller menu at lunch) and dinner price, including sashimi (without limits!). The service is always excellent and the fish is always fresh, which is no small feat given the distance from all oceans!
Be the first to ReplyNothing special go elsewhere
The food was nothing special all you can eat is very limited for the price they charge. I came here since it was close to the hotel but regret it. Service was also cold and felt like they were rushing me out. Go to another place skip this one.
