Unique Sushi for St Pete.
Excellent sushi and service. A cool experience for sushi unlike anywhere else locally. A series of excellent, hard to get fish presented and prepared in 8-10 different servings. Good sparkling champagne and

I finally tried Sushi Rexley in downtown St. Petersburg last night, had their signature omakase. It’s a small venue, only 10 or 12 seats at the sushi bar, they only do omakase. The restaurant is fairly casual with a young and very knowledgeable and interactive staff, but don’t let that fool you. The food and the overall experience were superlative. They had a wonderful variety of unusual, seasonal and exotic fish, sourced from around the world and of impeccable quality. Preparation was mostly traditional with some interesting twists that worked well (a whiskey-shoyu brushing for some fish, for example). They showed tremendous attention to detail and clearly strived for perfection in everything. Last night’s omakase included: simmered firefly squid; branzino, madai, hirame belly and marinated halibut sashimi; cubed albacore with caper oil; akami, ora king salmon and o-toro nigirizushi; ora king salmon cured with koji (wow!), hiramasa belly and shima-aji nigirizushi; buri carpaccio; uni with house-made tofu and yamaimo; shirako; fried cod roe; salmon roe and skin temaki; abalone with abalone liver rice; seared A5 Wagyu beef with uni cream; scallop and anago nigirizush; tamago. This was such a pleasant surprise, I’ve finally found a serious place for sushi here in Pinellas Co.

I have never had such a disconnect between my dining experience and the experiences of the vast majority of diners on here, yelp, and google. I'm not sure what to make of it. First, my problem is not with the food itself. We(wife and I) got the Omakase signature for each of us. The dishes they served, and the sake pairings, were very good. I also had an idea that we may not leave "stuffed" at a restaurant like this. However, it was a shockingly small amount of food. After reading many of the reviews, I'm wondering if they somehow screwed up and didn't give us all the courses...?? After about an hour and a half maybe, they simply stopped serving us. No one said anything. We were just waiting for more dishes to come out...Eventually my wife asked one of the chefs and he said that was it. We confirmed with him we had ordered the "signature" Omakase and he said it was done. We really were in disbelief. Also, the majority of our dishes were not made by the main chef, but by an assistant, a kid in his 20's about as Japanese as I am. Nothing wrong with that except for 150 dollars each I thought we may get a little more attention from the head guy, as there were only 2 other people dining there the entire time. Each dish he presented to us was then explained by the kid - of course he was wearing a mask but he was just mumbling and we had to keep asking him to repeat it. I've just never had an experience so "opposite" of the many excellent reviews I had read. Basically, we got a VERY small amount of excellent sushi. The customer service was certainly not indicative of such a large price tag. It's disappointing, because I really expected it to be a great meal. Really confused by all the amazing reviews. Do I really eat that much more than everyone else??! Maybe they actually screwed up and skipped a couple of courses. I don't know but based on my experience, there's no way I would recommend this place.

From the appetizer to the last course the sushi chef served an extraordinary array of perfectly prepared fish for almost 4 hours of a nonstop tasting extravaganza. The service was a great combination of professionalism and affability. There was also a bonus course of wagyu beef. There were many highlights but I can still taste the uni with caviar and quail egg in broth. I have been eating sushi for 40 years and this topped many previous much more expensive dinners including Nabu and other highly touted other New York sushi restaurants. For a fish lover this was a memorable evening.
Be the first to ReplyWOW, WOW, WOW! Truly the Best Sushi I've Found in Florida.
Although this restaurant claims to have been around for 2 years, my wife and I just recently discovered it. Situated right across the street from the Sundial Mall, it's amazing we missed it. But seeing as its' small in size (seating available for maybe 20 people at a time), I guess it's easy to overlook this gem. The sushi, by far, is the most tasteful I've ever had outside of Asia. Each piece melted in my mouth and was exquisite in flavor. Most surprising was the mackerel. If you've ever had mackerel sushi, chances are high it was whitish and dryer than most other fish and strong in taste. Not here! OMG, it was wonderful. My wife and I (especially me!) couldn't stop sampling as many different fish as our stomachs allowed. And kudos to the staff that was there that night... they added to the wonderful experience by taking the time to talk with us about each piece we sampled. We simply loved this place. The ONLY negative was the final bill. I hadn't realized that 2 pieces of uni cost $30, and I ordered it 3 times, setting us back $90 for just 6 pieces of sushi. Ouch! But it was sooooo good! Wrapping up, I highly, highly recommend Sushi Sho Rexley if you want a truly fantastic sushi experience... but be prepared in advance that premium experiences usually bring premium price tags.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Sushi.
The quality of the sushi was quite good! The restaurant is small and there are not a lot of sets but I was there on a Wednesday night so no problem. This is the real deal and not the cali-american comprise that passes as sushi.
Be the first to ReplyMight be good compared to local competitors, but not up to the hype
The food was fresh, but it just did not live up to the hype. We have had Omakase at other places, and this this just did not compare to those.
Be the first to ReplySome of the best sushi I have had since Tokyo
The Omakase menu was excellent . I have not had toro this good since I was in Tokyo and the uni was the best I have ever had. All of it was wonderful. Plus, I really enjoyed the way it was served. I can't wait to return.
Be the first to ReplyEXCELLENT OMAKASE EXPERIENCE- A MUST TRY
Hands down this will be one of the best meals you have all year or the best if you don't splurge again. I was searching for an authentic sushi restaurant when I came across this place. I have never had an Omakase dining experience, but my husband has seeing as though he has been to Japan. You make the reservation online and shortly after, an employee will text you for the details. I did inform her that I had Celiacs and asked would they be able to accommodate that. She informed me that the Omakase sushi- everything prepared gluten free for 90$ was the better option to prepared gluten free. And that is 90.00$ per person. So the way they do their reservations is very precise, the restaurant only seats 10 to 14 people at a time and you have to be on time for your reservation. Its a very small intimate setting where the chef is right in front of you preparing each course and handing it ti you or placing it on the plate on the bar. Don't let the price discourage you! Its a LOT of food, more than I could even finish. The sushi was the BEST I HAVE EVER HAD. My husband said it was exactly like his experiences in Japan. It was a phenomenal dinner and the chef(s) and other staff were very friendly and talkative. I could also see the difference in some of my courses that had been made gluten free vrs. My husbands (he is not gluten free). Everything was pretty straight forward and the dinner takes about 2 hours which is why you need to be on time. This is something you don't want to miss out on- you wont look at sushi the same way again after eating here! They serve sake, beer, and sparkling sake. Its cheaper to just buy a bottle of sake and share it. Lastly, you can park valet right across the street at the sundial or self park in the garage.
Be the first to ReplyThe will ruin you on sushi anywhere else
This place is amazing. First, it’s small, so make a reservation. It can only seat 10. The fish is like nothing I’ve had. Fish flow in from japan it’s got the most amazing flavors. We did the package that was $90 a person and it was a lot of food! Thee was so much attention to detail. And the chefs and waiter were all so attentive. They brought you each course of sushi with such care. This is great for a date night. And you won’t find commercial sushi here - no rolls with mayonnaise sauces etc. this is all about enjoying the flavor of the fish with minimal extras. I even ate and like sea urchin! Make sure to add this to your bucket list of sushi restaurants.
