Having eagerly anticipated dining at Sushi Tama ever since spotting it on Eater LA's prestigious list of top sushi spots, I finally had the chance to visit last night with a friend. From the moment we stepped inside, I could understand why it earned such accolades. The interior exuded an air of decadence, immediately signaling that this was a place where sushi was taken seriously. Upon being seated, we were presented with the option of either the $100 per person omakase at a table or the $180 per person experience at the sushi bar. Our server, Matt, kindly explained that the higher price at the sushi bar was due to some exclusive offerings crafted specifically for that setting. We opted to select our own pieces from the menu, finding the prices for nigiri to be quite reasonable. We indulged in an array of familiar favorites such as salmon, chu-toro, o-toro, yellowtail, amberjack, golden eye snapper, striped jack, aji, ikura, and uni. While tempted by the A5, we abstained due to it being a Friday during Lent. The portion sizes were satisfying, and each piece was expertly prepared. For drinks, we chose a bottle of Heiwa Kid Junmai Sake, 720ml, which we nearly polished off between the two of us. Our reservation was for 6 pm, and by 8 pm, we had completed our meal. However, our otherwise excellent dining experience was marred by an interaction with the host. She hurriedly approached our table, essentially shooing us away under the pretext of another reservation, despite the sushi bar appearing relatively empty. Spending approximately $400 for dinner, it was disappointing to feel rushed out the door. The hostess on duty that evening could certainly benefit from a lesson in customer service, and I hope the management takes note. In terms of parking, we utilized the garage downstairs. Arriving before 6 pm, we paid $20 for parking, but I was informed that parking after 6 pm incurred a flat fee of $15 for the entire weekend. While I would love to return to Sushi Tama for another culinary experience, I would prefer not to contend with the same treatment from the hostess. Matt, our server, was exceptional, but receiving a subtle nudge to vacate our table only after we had paid our bill was less than ideal. Clear communication regarding reservation constraints upon seating would be greatly appreciated in the future.
