TAO Downtown Restaurant New York Reviews from The Last Year
Need to hire a replacement.
THIS PLACE IS AWFUL! Our waiter Kimberly was horrible, she has the driest personality I have ever seen. Not to mention she didn’t engage in conversation, when we asked for recommendations she wasn’t very helpful, almost as if she wasn’t knowledgeable about the menu. Definitely will be asking for a different server if we ever decide to return.
This place is way past its old glory days, and it is a darn
This place is way past its old glory days, and it is a darn shame; I feel compelled to write a review about my last and final visit as an opposition to my first visit review above. Had a double birthday post-wedding celebration and was excited to bring my friends and relatives from overseas to experience Tao. I could not have thought that a place like Tao could botch a simple family style dinner on a quiet Sunday night - but they did. For starters, checking in. The scantily dressed blonde hostess/Maitre d/Manager was too busy on her phone to pay attention to the only group of guests arriving. After a perfunctory hello, Miss Tatoo had as wait for our table. I get it, restaurant policy is to seat whole parties but why keep us waiting for more after the whole group has arrived at a half-empty restaurant on a Sunday night? We were sat over 40 minutes past our reservation time despite having a reservation a month in advance, in a HALF EMPTY dining room. Service at the table was spotty at best and nothing like my previous visits. Either they were short staffed or they have a hard time retaining competent experienced staff. Food was slammed altogether at once without explanation of what is what. Drink orders took 15 minutes plus to arrive. I can understand some delays on busy nights but the restaurant was half empty. Table was not getting cleared in time in-between courses and as a result food was getting cold waiting on the runner trays while the table was getting cleared. I could go on about the lack of overall hospitality, and lack of attention but I will leave it at that. The only good part was the food which was indeed delicious albeit lukewarm to cold. Tao as is appeals to casual diners in their 20s and tourists with no service or hospitality expectations. We will gladly take our business elsewhere.
Overprice and so so food, the cake $24 for my friend
Overprice and so so food, the cake $24 for my friend birthday is pretty good. Will not back.
Everything was great, music, food and vibes were all
Everything was great, music, food and vibes were all excellent. Inside was very dim and romantic. Good spot to take nice pictures

First timer at Tao! It was beyond amazing! The spicy tuna on crispy rice, tuna pringles, and tuna poke were to die for. Our server Hope was also beyond amazing! She recommended the roasted dorado and it was delicious, she also recommended the Saketini Sutra cocktail and I couldn't get enough of them! Amazing experience thank you Hope!
While the food was quite good, the disrespectful staff was
While the food was quite good, the disrespectful staff was enough for me and my party to never return to any establishment associated with Tao Group Hospitality. When we were seated, our party of eight ordered drinks and showed the waiter our IDs. After a few minutes, we had a bouncer approach our table, stating that "One of you gave it away that you are underage, I need you to show me your iPhones and IDs." We did so without hesitation, as we are all 22. We recognized and understood that they might wish to verify the age of a group our size placing drink orders. Yet, he continued to move from person to person, mocking us and stating that he was going to "catch us." After we all passed his test, he continued to degrade us, telling us that we looked 17. We have never experienced such disrespect before, let alone from a hospitality group with the mission statement, "We strive to exceed expectations and continually reinvent the future of hospitality through our owned operations." While we told our waiter about the unprofessionalism we had been subjected to by the bouncer, we never received any sort of apology from higher staff or management. We will definitely not be returning to this establishment-- we even considered canceling our orders and leaving-- as we paid hundreds of dollars to be degraded and mocked for a mediocre meal and a pathetic experience.
The food here was worth the hype.
A little overpriced, but the ambiance was a cool experience
This place makes you feel like you're in a different
This place makes you feel like you're in a different country or world. It's loud and action packed, fun, and the food is amazing. It's definitely for a younger crowd, but we had a ball, and we just kept ordering because everything we tasted was fantastic!!
Although Tao is on the pricier side, you do get what you
Although Tao is on the pricier side, you do get what you paid for with good portion sizes. Since I sat at the bar the service was great and the waiters were very attentive. I really enjoy the sushi here and haven't experienced a bad meal , also love the atmosphere even just for drinks with friends.
We were so excited to try this spot.
We've been to the one in Vegas and the other location in NYC. The expectations were high, however service was horrible. We had such a bad experience, the waiter slammed the plates on the table, got our order wrong. When asked to place send the correct food it took over 25 minutes. Everyone was done eating by the time my plate came. I was also disappointed, because often times when a food order is taken back a manager will come and speak to the customer and address if there were any issues. In this case I had to ask for the manager. We didn't want any compensation at this point, just wanted him to be aware of the horrible service we received. Compliments to the chef for the food, it would have been more enjoyable if we had better service. I gave a 3 review simply because the food was good. The overall experience not so much The ambiance there is great, the colors, the music, the vibe.
Our food was AMAZING and the ambiance was perfect to
Our food was AMAZING and the ambiance was perfect to celebrate my friend's 23rd birthday. However, the service was subpar. Miguel our server was disengaged and unintuitive. We came in with our party missing one member. He did not give us an additional menu until 20 minutes after she arrived. He did not explain the menu to us as we are visiting the city and waited approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes to even explain the menu. After taking an hour and a half to take our orders, once our sushi appetizer came out, we were not satisfied with the consistency of the roll. When expressing this concern to Miguel, instead of offering a substitution, he proceeded to have an attitude and say "What's wrong with it" and simply took the plate of food away without offering a solution. Since it was my friend's birthday, I wanted to order her a dessert and have them sing to her. Instead of telling us they did not celebrate birthdays, he simply dropped the dessert off in front of her and walked away. When attempting to get the check paid and our food boxed up, it took an additional 45 minutes to get this done. We spent a total of 3 and a half hours of dinner, which is a considerable amount of time to spend in one place visiting a city for one day. We also had to consistently flag down other waiters to even get water refilled for the tI am extremely disappointed with the service we received and it totally ruined the vibe of my friends birthday dinner.
Fantastic experience, great food!
We had a wonderful evening with great service, fantastic food and the vibe was also great. Ok, it is a bit noisy but the restaurant was fully booked. We loved it!
Average service
The staff does not seem to care about the customers. Service is impersonal. Atmosphere is good , cool vibes with music. The food is very good, we had the chicken dumplings, white rice ( it was a bit dry) and the pepper chicken. The cocktails were very average.
Great service that can’t be found easily in 2024 in NYC
Great service, Great food and Anthony is great in recommending dishes and taking feedback about the food High recommend if you appreciate great service with good food for the price you pay then this the spot to eat at in NYC Will visit again for lunch for sure
I swear IT WAS THE WORST EXPERIENCE
The worst experience I have ever had in a restaurant, they left me waiting for a table for one of the tables at the end of the night… we finished eating and we were the last table in the restaurant to leave, because we were among the sultanas to be served, upon leaving There was a guy from security telling us to leave, he was too rude to us and they repeatedly told us to “go away” I swear IT WAS THE WORST EXPERIENCE
Horrible
I went there with my husband, we had such a horrible experience. Our reservation was for 7:30, we were ONE minute late and our table was already taken. After speaking to the manager he stated they over booked the restaurant. Nick and the other manager were not helpful. Good luck going there.
Always a Tao fan, especially in the Chelsea area
Like other Tao locations- this one certainly did not disappoint! The atmosphere, music, bar, and food were extremely on-par with their quality and brand.
The family style seating and food offerings was a great option for a large group (40)
There definitely was no lack of servers, someone was constantly bringing new food and clearing empty dishes. There was also a person who just described the dishes and answered questions
Dinner at the Bar
You definitely should have reservations, but we were able to sit at the small tables in the bar area. The bar /lounge has a full food menu. I got ruby cocktail it was perfectly balanced. We got the orange chicken and the spicy shrimp. They both were great. The vibe was great. Definitely would come back.
Above average
I feel it was good but slightly overrated

Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.

Can come from a lot of places, people who don't want to get charged their cancellation fee or people who just have them and cant go.

almost all restaurants aren't affiliated with AT and I'm guessing it's mostly people wanting to not pay cancellation fees.
