The Bell at Skenfrith Abergavenny Reviews from The Last Year
Poor experience
Went to the bell for a drink after a long walk. Was greated by the most miserable rude and unhelpful member of bar staff who quite clearly should not work in customer services!! Shame as the restaurant looked great!! Would think twice about going back!!
Ding, dong! The Bell at Skenfrith does it again...
As a treat, my partner and I recently invited a friend from Bristol to join us for lunch at the Bell at Skenfrith. A meal at The Bell is a very special experience in that it is a low key smart restaurant (it would sit perfectly in a smart London setting) which offers sumptuous food and discreet service. If by chance you are looking for a cheap and cheerful, run-of-the-mill pub; do not even think of going to The Bell which does not cater for the fast and furious 'churn 'em out' clientele. On our latest visit, my partner opted for the roast pork while our guest chose the roast lamb and I treated myself to a venison burger. All three dishes were succulent, cooked beautifully and served with perfect accompaniments. Two of us had desserts, and what with teas and coffees, the bill came to just under £120, which I consider to be reasonable for gorgeously prepared seasonal food served in a stylish setting. Skenfrith is a charming village where you can go for a walk after your meal at The Bell to try and work off the indulgence of such a culinary treat. It is also the site of the ruins of Skenfrith Castle which is part of the Three Castles; a former medieval lordship which comprises Grosmont, Skenfrith and the White Castle.
A room with a view!
We had been looking forward to our few days away as a couple for our wedding anniversary. The Bell at Skenfrith was unknown to us but in the right area. We had read some positive the reviews and thought that it looked like a nice place. The hotel was as expected from the reviews really clean and tidy. The housekeeping staff are outstanding, the staff friendly and efficient. The room we had was adequate to our needs. Unfortunately the pillows were really hard and uncomfortable, even though we asked for more pillows, they too were the same. We decided to make an unscheduled trip to Waitrose in Abergavenny to buy ourselves new pillows. The lighting in our room was poor especially in the bathroom. The only privacy in the bathroom from being easily seen from the back garden was by drawing the curtains, which was awkward because it made the room even gloomier! The quirky wooden 'boot straightener ' toilet roll holder was difficult to use and unhygienic. Especially when it had a half used toilet roll on it left by the previous guests! The Bell is obviously a destination for local foodies. Which we can understand as the evening meals were good. However, that cannot be said for the breakfasts. The choice of breakfasts wasn't vast, eggs with everything, but over three days of our stay not one of the poached eggs were correctly cooked. On the last morning of our stay the bacon under the Eggs Benedict was 'delightfully' stripped with the colour purple!? If you don't like cats this is certainly not the venue for you. We have pets ourselves, but when one of the two hotel cats went to the toilet in the fireplace next to where we were sitting we moved! Even though we 'told' on the poor cat, the pee still hadn't been cleaned away the following evening. We pity anyone sitting by that fire when it's lit later this winter! We did fill in a feedback form for the hotel and pointed out our observations.
Best Sunday lunch around
Beautiful food, lovely staff and stunning surroundings. Never, ever had anything less than a great experience here all round - it’s well worth the 45 minute drive to get here. Attentive but not overbearing staff. We both had the Roast Beef today followed by apple and cinnamon crumble, worth every penny.
Fabulous
Had a fabulous lunch - friendly relaxed staff who made us very welcome, delicious meal, very pretty location, all in all a brilliant stop. Will definitely go out of my way to make a return visit. Thank you
Overnight stay
A hotel may have all the necessary accolades but without the staff they mean nothing. My daughter and I arrived to be met by the most charming lady who proceeded to take our bags to our room. Explain the layout and was generally helpful. The restaurant staff were equally pleasant making sure we were content at every turn. A wonderful meal which could not be faulted. The whole experience was first class. Thank you.
Book your table now....
Number 8 for the 12/12 venus. The Bell Skenfrith, a really nice restaurant, seating area comfy, clean and spacious. Food was extremely tasty, well presented and ample. Totally smashed some of our past restaurants not to name any of course. Staff were brilliant, helpful and friendly.... one downside for this restaurant for me was the location, a little bit of a trek for us really BUT saying that, Yes I would highly recommend a visit.... 8.5 / 10 for me..... Go on people book a table.... you will enjoy it...
Midway stop over to coast
Everything about our stay was excellent, the food was outstanding as were the staff - engaging, attentive and very friendly - thank you to all the team. The saying goes ‘you get what you pay for’ and whilst there might be cheaper options, everything we got was value for money.
Perfect
This was a perfect stop for us on a trip to South Wales. Lovely location in the small village of Skenrirh next to an old bridge. Staff very friendly and helpful. Restaurant was a little gem snd though l’y recommended. Good gluten free options and our first taste of a Welsh white wine.
