Per The Cavalier's description they are a "upscale British influenced restaurant". Why did I ever think that this would be a plus and not a minus, British food is notoriously mediocre to the point that Indian food is probably the most popular food in Britain. This place is fancy and has a nice ambiance and good service, but otherwise the food is quite "mid" and pricey for what you get. Totally unremarkable food in a place that looks nice. You can do so much better for so much less in the area that there's really no point in going here unless for some god forsaken reason you're craving $29 fish and chips.
Be the first to ReplyFine dining with some of my favorite cohorts.
Everything was delicious, and service was beyond exceptional.. From host to bartender.. We feasted on everything. I was full, so for dessert, I went with the smoky peanut butter cocktail! Kris was always attentive, and making drinks a little too easy to drink, keeping us longer than expected.. Management also gave us a complimentary tour of their speakeasy at Marianne's and the playroom in Hotel Zetta. Such a beautiful venue for so many different occasions.

The Cavalier is an excellent restaurant with an awesome atmosphere to host your private events.

I ate a very delicious burger with a salad. Waiters were very supportive and provide a good service. Price is fair enough
Be the first to ReplyFriendly bartenders and a cute decor.
They have a pup menu so definitely already 5 stars as a base. It's great for groups and centralized in downtown. Highly recommended.
Be the first to ReplyReally unimpressed by their menu.
I attended a private function and the menu was just weird. There were 3 entree options offered, one was fried mushrooms, the other two were fish meals. There in lies the problem I don't eat mushrooms or seafood. I suppose I could have asked for another option but didn't want to be "that guy". Not sure who picked the menu, maybe it was the restaurant, maybe it was the event organizer, either way, don't know how there wasn't at least one beef or chicken option to choose from. They did have an outstanding Brussels sprouts appetizers, so there's that The waitstaff was great.

Waitress didn't seem to care. Had to get up from table and complain to manager twice before we got our food. Almost left to just find a pizza place. Food was good once it arrived, but by that time we were in a bad mood. Over all, a very poor experience, cannot recommend.

I never forget to write about how good Cavalier was, their humble staff members and hostess, the holiday decor, and of course, the presentation and quality of the food prepared for me. Everyone loves Cavalier because the people I saw were here to dine on holiday occasions. This fine dining area looked like it was chosen the most when it comes to better tastier quality eats. Aside from the minty N/A drink, salads are a must-have for my appetizer. I liked how the Cavalier Salad was tossed perfectly; every greens and dressing in harmony. No need for a miso glaze as a more flavorful alternative. Cold greens complete; on to the warm greens! If I remember correctly: green beans, micro greens, cauliflower, squash, and the Tempura Shiitake Mushroom sitting on a big plate of coconut curry. I was surprised how any chef had made the coconut curry mild. It's a pleasant taste to have that even a non adventurous will have this veggie dish. The amount of breading of the Tempura was absolutely filling and I hardly have enough room for any dessert. Best place to dine for the holidays; however, the menu option had changed since I first came here. Maybe one day, I'll be lucky enough to come across the Skuna Bay Salmon dish followed by kombucha. The gaming room upstairs is for the private party. Perhaps I'll ask my supervisor to choose Cavalier as another Golden Gate Taproom to celebrate next time.

If you are on a diet this is the place to come as my friend's food never arrived. After countless times of being told it was on its way they said they couldn't make it happen - it was fish and chips not an artistic masterpiece ... My friend left hungry ...
Be the first to ReplyA nice warm ambiance place especially during the holidays.
Staff was friendly and attentive. Cocktails were slightly above average but the dessert was a disappointment. The bread pudding was a tad dry and small in portion. However, the brussel sprout chips were delicious. The devil eggs were ordinary but pricey. The salmon was done perfectly and the burger was alright (bland in flavors). The seating was not very comfortable when you had to cram into a small table with a handful of guests in your party. For a $$$ restaurant, I expect everything to be on point.

Had the Marlowe Burger - asked for medium rare, came perfectly cooked. Fries were good, standard pour on house wine. A little pricey when compared to other similar menus at other restaurant. Has a Very nice warm ambiance . The fish and chips are really good, and the Brussel sprout chips are also interestingly different.

Came here last night to celebrate my husband's birthday along with a few friends. It was our first time here and we were surprised by the interior. The Cavalier felt very sophisticated and kind of 'fancy' inside--which I loved. There weren't very many people on a Saturday night, many tables were empty. This was great because it didn't feel too loud or congested. We shared the follow appetizers:Onion rings 4/5Deviled Eggs 3/5Grilled Octopus 3.5/5Brussels Sprout Chips 3.5/5For my entree I had the fish and chips which was delicious. It came with 3 good-sized golden pieces of fish fried in a light and crispy batter. The fries were amazing because it was the right size and had a good crispy crunch. I had to stop myself from devouring them all. I also enjoyed the little salad that the dish came with. However I wish it came with tartar sauce though, but our waitress kindly brought me a side of aioli sauce. My husband had his favorite Marlowe Burger and liked it. (He wished he had gotten the double though.) Service was great and attentive. There was a small hiccup with having to wait for our cocktails--some came quickly while others took awhile, but our waitress kindly came by to let us know they were short staffed tonight and gave us 2 cocktails on the house. Overall we all had a good experience. Note: They have a cake cutting fee and it's about $3.50/pp.

When we walked in it was a bit empty and I thought it was strange. But then I realized it was only 4:30pm so a bit strange on (on our part) - too late for lunch and too early for dinner! By the time we left, the place was packed. The ribeye was absolutely delish! I was delighted! The fish and chips were also yummers. We had raspberry trifle for desert - not a crumb we left! This was another try based on Yelp, and I was happy with the recommendation- glad we tried it!
Be the first to ReplyReally great place walking distance from the San Francisco
Really great place walking distance from the San Francisco Marriott Marquis. Very cool British inspired menu and ambiance. We all got the deviled eggs and Brussel sprouts and they were both divine. Deviled eggs might have been the best I've ever had. Lobster bisque was first rate too. For the main, I got the Skuna Bay salmon and prawns. Was absolutely delish. Coworkers got the fish and chips and burger. Burger was also good but the fish and chips were a tad bland. Desert was the buggers disappointment with the Raspberry Trifle. It wasn't. Lose to a trifle, had no actual full sized fruit in it and just tasted off. Otherwise I was super happy with the food. Service was first rate as well. Recommend for sure. Just stay away from that particular desert and be more adventurous on the menu then the fish and chips.
Be the first to ReplyWe made a 4:30 PM reservation via Open Table.
When we entered, most tables were empty. The person that received us told us that we can sit at one of the tables but will have to move elsewhere once the happy hour period ended at 5PM. We asked where would we be moved to, he said well you do not have a reservation. When I showed him the reservation on email, he gave me a blank look. Then, looks like his manager came over and asked how I made the reservation and that he will take up the matter with Open Table. We felt unwelcome. We had a drink and some food quickly and left at 5:15PM. They were mediocre compared to what we experienced 2 years ago. All the tables were still empty. Not sure what the big deal was. Will not go there again.
Be the first to ReplyI was hoping for a little more.
Marianne's was closed. The bad part is that you weren't informed that it's closed. Foods were ok. We had the pork chop and salmon. Pork chop was fine, it was over cooked so that was good. Salmon and the farro were a little salty. Deviled eggs were good. Fried sunchokes were novel. Chocolate delice were a disappointment. It was like a thick chocolate fudge. It was heavy but wasn't wow. Service was underwhelming. I almost have to twist her arms to tell me about the dishes. She was not into her job. But the good thing is the decor. It was warm and cozy. If only you can eat the decor! I can't honestly recommend this place for foods.

Everything was top notch! Ordered appetizers & meals and was not disappointed. Our waiter was attentive and made sure all of our demands were met- even while tending bar! Love the ambiance. Will go again.
Be the first to ReplyI came here with SO for Christmas Day Prix Fixe menu.
We had an early reservation and sat down at the right side of the restaurant, near the library. We ordered:Amuse bouche - Quail egg Dijonnaise with celery salt and crispy shallots. The Dijonnaise was not too mayonnaise-y and crispy shallots added a nice crunch.Fava Bean Hummus with toasted garlic and chili vinaigrette: This had a nice kick and hummus was flavorful with the toasted garlic vinaigrette. It came with warm sliced baguette slices. Wild Mushroom and ricotta tart with peas and herb salad: I could not believe my eyes at how small this tart was. It was the size of a pack of Juciy Fruit gum (!!!). It was on flaky layers of phyllo which was nice, but this was gone in 1 bite. SO ordered salmon crudo with cucumber, lime and chili oil and capers which was much better than the pack of gum sized tart I ate. Grilled Ribeye Steak with chimichurri and smoked butter: The steak was a good size and came with two slices. I took one bite and it was rare and not medium (don't judge) like I asked. I sent it back and focused on the side dishes whilst it was being grilled some more. Potato Gratin with gruyere cheese and chives: This was really good, the thinly sliced potatoes were great with the gruyere cheese.Haricot Vert with garlic, lemon and herbs: Crunchy French green beans were nice and lemony.Roasted Brown Butter Brussels Sprouts: These were slightly crispy and I enjoyed the brown butter richness of the Brussels Sprouts. My Ribeye Steak finally appeared and I was able to cut into it and take a bite. This time around it was cooked perfectly and I enjoyed it with the chimichurri sauce. I was so hungry I forgot to take a picture! Sticky Toffee Bread Pudding with medjool dates and coffee ice cream: I liked this but I would have loved it if it wasn't so dry.The restaurant was starting to fill up and get busy, I'm glad I came early - my hot water was filled frequently which I really appreciated as I was getting chilly. The service at The Cavalier was attentive and unobtrusive which was great. I felt like the kitchen was overwhelmed at some point and some of the dishes could have been better.

I went here years ago during my first visit to San Francisco over Thanksgiving Break, and I still tell people how delicious and impressive the meal was. Staff was attentative (but not too much), informative, and fun! The atmosphere makes you feel cozy and classy at the same time. Love the balance.

Great food, fun bar, a slightly packed but comfortable dining area and a subtle vibe. Decent veggie options and flexibility on the menu. Well placed if you are out and about in that area.

Don't be fooled by the understated menu, this is my wife's current favorite restaurant. We've had Spagos and Robuchon, but what is great about The Cavalier is how each dish has flavors that complement each other. A lot of restaurant these days have chefs that want to overwhelm you with different flavors. But Chef Jennifer Puccio is able to bring out the essence of each dish. For example, the Snow Crab salad is paired with celery root and watermelon radish. The veggies in this dish accenturate the Crab and does not overwhelm it. Same thing with the fish and chips. You wouldn't think fish and chips can be extraordinary, but this one is the best! The light batter highlights the fish and complements it well. None of the over flouring batter you get with a lot of fish and chips. It's paired with the English peas and snow pea leaves with mint - which livens the dish. I'm usually not a big fan of aoli, but her malt vinegar aoli is a genius take on the usual condiments for fish and chips. We fly out from Los Angeles just to experience Chef Puccio's excelent palate!
Be the first to ReplyThis place is difficult.
I'd love to give it higher marks but the service is just terrible. The managers are so rude and dismissive, and have a fairly condescending attitude for a place that serves food that is decent but not at all extraordinary or memorable. The space is beautiful and has tons of potential but the lack of hospitality is very noticeable and negatively impacts the experience.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food.
Great drinks. The ambiance is wonderful. As soon as you walk in it feels like London. Nice staff and timely service. I wish portions were bigger.
