I've come to Exchange numerous times over the past several years. Even on an off day, it's still solid.I have to give it only 4 stars because the menu isn't quite as funky/daring as it was pre-COVID. I miss the lamb kebabs and the red snapper with Thai-style curry. The current menu is good, but it feels very safe and undifferentiated. I'm sure several factors prompted this menu pivot, but I just miss the risk-taking style of the old menu. Bring back the lamb kebabs and red snapper, please. :prayerhandsemoji:And take it from me (a drinks snob), the drinks are exceptional. Not sure who the bar director is, but they put great care into those recipes and have inspired me to experiment at home.

Incredibly high quality food here for a great price right in DTLA. The service is impeccable - highly attentive staff and very friendly. The menu is expansive and suitable for vegetarians with plenty of options. We ordered many appetizers to share amongst 4 people and the portions were great, and the flavors were exceptionally on point. Two of us (non-vegetarians) were looking for a main entree to share that was similar to a poultry dish on the menu, but wanted a fish option. The waitress recommended to us a whole fish dish that was not on the menu, which came with a variety of grilled vegetables and tahini noodles. The dish was enormous and enough to feed 4. It was so delicious that we want to come back and order just that dish for a dinner meal. The restaurant itself was not busy on a Friday night - walk in is totally ok. I actually would recommend coming here in DTLA if you're looking for a casual to high-end spot (with acceptable prices) and you don't have a reservation anywhere else. Amazing experience here and will definitely be back!

Food was awesome, which I wasn't optimistic about, given the the restaurant was nearly empty on a Friday night. Went with a group of friends, shared all the plates and everyone was happy with everything from the food to the drinks. The only mixed review was dessert, not everyone loved it, but everything else was unanimously approved by the table.

The vibes are sensational, the food flavors are out this world. My server Christian was phenomenal. 100/10
Be the first to ReplyHad a great experience here.
The decor, very residential with a lot to take in. Super comfortable and appropriately lit for an intimate dinner with friends. Love the overscaled light fixtures. Ordered several dishes:Salatim Platter. An appetizer sampler platter full of good stuff. Olives, cabbage, super creamy hummus and pita, etc. Definitely recommend to get things started. Falafel salad, Market salad and Kale salad. Market was by far the best. Love the lemon-thyme dressing. Kale salad has a kick which I loved. Falafel salad was good, nothing to write home about. Grilled Lamb Ribs. Hands down the best item on the menu. Fall of the bone tender, very meaty with great depth of flavor. Not too sweet which made them so delicious. Pan Seared Coho Salmon. Great crisp on the skin here. Salmon was very mild. Worked well with the tomato curry. Koji Japanese Sweet Potato. Yum! Would order again in a second. Charred Cabbage. Best part was the labneh. Very creamy with a robust, tangy aftertaste. Desert. Had the special which tasted like a chocolate corn fritter. Very good texture served with cream. Christian served us and was very dialed in to us having a great time. Cocktails were well made as well. Will definitely be back.

Had lunch here with a friend during a quiet hour and enjoyed the beautiful ambiance. Staff was incredibly friendly and gave great recommendations for our first time. I tried the Bahn mi and it was so soft and delicious. Not the traditional flavors of your typical Bahn mi, yet nonetheless still amazing. Their brussel sprouts and hummus for starters were also so flavorful. I would definitely come back again for dinner.

*** DineLA Experience Review! ***Located in the Freehand Hotel, it was a bit hidden. I visited on a Saturday evening and there is valet service outside. The double doors that lead into venue is the entrance for The Exchange as well as another lounge/restaurant. My friend and I were politely greeted by the hostess who offered us a normal menu as well as the DineLA menu. We were then immediately seated. It was not very busy - there were maybe 4 other parties seated in the restaurant. The DineLA menu consisted of three courses and wine pairings. My friend and I chose different items so we could try more offerings.Starters*Grilled Lamb Ribs: these literally melted in our mouths after they fell off the bone. They were kind of slowly grilled in honey glaze that is not overwhelmingly sweet or super messy. I'm not a huge fan of lamb generally, but the texture of these made me a fan for the night. The paired red wine really brought out the flavor the honey glaze*Pickled Cucumbers: Sliced Persian cucumbers with pine nuts and honey dates mixed in a chili vinaigrette. The dressing is not spicy - it's a bit tangy but it is so refreshing. The honey dates are also crunchy. I do not remember which wine was paired with this starterMain Entree:*Pan Seared Salmon: I had mixed feelings about this dish. The salmon had amazing texture and firmness, but lacked flavor. Some areas tasted simply like salmon. It is seated on a bed of tomato curry and served with broccoli and frisee. I didn't really understand how to eat the frisee. *Hanger Steak: the quality of the steak was better than what we expected. It was cooked medium per our request and very juicy. It was served with brussels sprouts and broccolini. A champagne was paired with the fish, which made an interesting and bubbly experience.Dessert:*Blue Corn Almond Fritters: fresh from the oven!! These were moist and nutty and served with a light whipped cream. Definitely a hit between the two of us. I did not enjoy the wine pair for this one... it was very smokey and heavy.*Ube Cake: A cute slice of ube cake with toasted pistachio! I felt the two flavors don't mesh well, but the cake was moist. Ube flavor was there, but overpowered by the pistachio. A sweet dessert wine was paired with this and it was much more pleasant than the other wine. The restaurant decor and ambiance were intimate. It was dimly lit and decently quiet. Our server was super sweet and energetic (it was actually her second day on the job), and she did amazing!

We felt like it must have been the waitresses first day without any training.Really bad! She messed up all the orders, then never saw her again. The bus boy was the only one who paid any attention to our table.we will not be returning.

Wow. Just wow. The Exchange is a hidden gem. I was super intrigued by the idea of Asian Israeli fusion and I was not disappointed. Hospitality was graceful and efficient, but the food is the real star here.
Be the first to ReplyI was not expecting much from this street level restaurant
I was not expecting much from this street level restaurant at the bottom of the Freehand hotel. After passing through a lobby of hipsters on laptops, I found my way to the Exchange where I was the only customer. As most Los Angelenos do I'm constantly on the look out for the perfect burger and I have found many. I was not expecting much when I ordered the Exchange Burger and fries especially being the only person eating. What a surprise when their burger turned out to be one of the best burgers I've had in LA. The only burger I've ever had that was so perfectly balanced every bite contained the flavors of every ingredient. It was mind boggling. A perfectedly cooked patty mixed with the butter on the bun to the unique greens, the sharp cheese, pickles and sauce. They are all there every bite. And the fries even though they look like nothing but frozen bag fries were hot and fresh out of the fryer! This burger had a flavor I can only describe as...."pungent". Probably a lot to do with the cheese. Sounds weird but that's the unique amazing taste it has.

I went here last night and the food, drinks and service were all amazing! Only thing to note is that they only use peanut oil so watch out if you are allergic.
Be the first to ReplyI am telling the world about this restaurant.
Because this restaurant encompasses the world :) we dined here on a 5-day LA trip and ended up eating here twice! First, we were absolutely blown away by the hospitality shown by our server Raphael, who made fantastic recommendations on apps, drinks, and mains. He saw we were enjoying our meal and promptly asked about our flavor preferences, and if we liked spicy -- "yes"! Thoughtfully gave us a few sauces to try with our mains. We liked the food so much, Raphael passed along our notes to him to head chef Narita. This was not only a delightful memory of a great night with delicious food, but also a warm longtime memory of meeting a talented, intentional chef. Narita's dining experience is such a hidden gem, each dish created gave us flavor profiles of Latin cuisine, Middle East, and Asian. We were not expecting a fusion restaurant, much less such a fantastic blend of global flavors in a highly sophisticated fashion, at a hotel restaurant!! Learning about her culinary experience and intentions with the food made it worthwhile, easily one of our top restaurants to visit time and again. Our second night eating here surprisingly surpassed expectations, AGAIN. The drink I got -- Lavender and Mezcal based, was as delicious as the first, and seeing Narita, Raphael, Stephanie, and the team again just made the conversations and food pair so well. We had a blast, definitely recommending this amazing experience to all friends and family near LA. Don't miss this precious spot in DTLA! And thanks Team again for making our trip so awesome!
Be the first to ReplyI was really into this restaurant originally because I
I was really into this restaurant originally because I lived in Miami and had gone to Broken Shaker and the affiliated restaurant (27 Restaurant) a million times. 27 restaurant in Miami is absolutely incredible, but The Exchange was nothing like it and didn't live up to the hype. The interior decor was cute and fun, although dark. The cod fried rice and the cauliflower were inedible salty. I was shocked. I genuinely wanted to love this restaurant but couldn't. The service was atrocious. Our waiter, Rafe, seemed to not care about us because we were young and only ordering a few appetizers. The food had potential, but oversalting is an unacceptable mistake. I hated this restaurant and wouldn't go back until Rafe is gone.
Be the first to ReplyWe thought the food was amazing.
Great flavors and fusion done right. The ambiance is trendy, and causal with some intimacy, cozy feels. Great for a date spot or group of friends. Our waiter was attentive and great. Knocked off a star for waiting so long for our main course. We sat at 8:30 and our main didn't arrive at the table until 10. They came by a few times to apologize on behalf of the kitchen staff and poured us some champagne to compensate which we appreciated but by the time our food came we were barely hungry anymore. Maybe we will give this place another try someday and update the review.

Normally I'm not a fan of wood paneling, but somehow it works in this vibrant yet cozy space. The music is set at just the right level so you're not yelling at your fellow guests. The staff were a fun and eclectic group who all seemed to work very well together. The food and cocktails were outstanding! We will definitely return.

This place is gorgeous!! The food is really good! This has been one of my favorite restaurants in LA. I know how hard it can be to find a restaurant that is cute from the inside and provides good food. I will be coming back! The waiter was very nice as well. Thank you!

This vegetable forward fusion restaurant is definitely on par with my palette. Each dish is thoughtfully curated with layering flavors, a surprise and delight with each bite. The portions are perfect, the staff incredibly attentive and kind, and the atmosphere superb. I really just wanted to hug the chef.
Be the first to ReplyWe had high hopes for this place after reading recent Yelp
We had high hopes for this place after reading recent Yelp reviews and hearing from coworkers, but we were extremely disappointed with our recent visit. I booked a lunch reservation for 7 for a quick work lunch with my team. When we got there, there was no host to seat us or confirm our reservation. We were just standing around awkwardly waiting for someone to come by. When we were finally seated, it was apparent that the table was not ready for 7 at all (i.e. missing chairs, table settings, etc.) despite having called far in advance to make a reservation. There was only one server who was acting as host, waiter, and busser for the entire place. The service was painfully slow and disorganized. There also appeared to be just one cook in the kitchen as well, which was strange to me. We only had an hour for lunch and everything that could've possibly went wrong happened: our orders took longer than expected, other parties who arrived after us somehow got their food first, our orders were wrong, the server couldn't remember who ordered what, etc. the list goes on. Halfway through the lunch rush they decided to bring out another server who was incredibly rude/condescending and didn't seem to be helping out at all. All would have been fine if the food had been amazing but it was truly lackluster and not worth the wait. I ordered the lamb pita and honestly have had better pita sandwiches at the falafel place down the street. They must have changed their chef because the food that was served was not reflective of the pictures at all. The hummus and pita appetizer was actually pretty decent, but definitely not worth the headache or hassle of dining in here. Hard pass.

This was our first visit to The Exchange, with an Israeli- inspired menu. We were created warmly upon entering and were seated in a cozy booth surrounded with lovely plants and warm wood finishes. Our waiter was Dorian, and he certainly knows his stuff! My husband can't eat spicy food after recent surgery so Dorian made sure we were able to enjoy each dish we ordered. Our favorites were the Citrus and Kohlrabi as well As the salt cod fried rice and the amazing fried cauliflower. Every was delicious, Dorian was so sweet and attentive, and the blue corn fritters for dessert were literally the best version of. Donut I've ever tasted!

I love it here!! The atmosphere is vibrant yet chill: the perfect place to get inspired and have a productive work session. the only thing better than the environment and the food is the people who work there. Edwin in particular is such a joy: very knowledgeable, friendly, and professional. ask about the owl floor tile! xo

Breakfast platter is really good and a perfectly shareable plate. The deconstructed everything bagel and micheladas is creative and a different vibe. It's a very nice place to have brunch or enjoy a pot of sencha tea. My favorite dish is the chicken schnitzel though.

From the almost historic appearing pre-covid era: Nested within a hotel, the Exchange Restaurant not only offered a unique atmosphere but also had a wonderful selection of tapas-style menu items that are a feast for vegetarians and carnivores alike. While waiting, the bar allowed for some experimental cocktail flavors, all beautifully arranged and very tasteful. ย Once ready to sit down, the table area had a warm appearance, almost home-like. The waiter was knowledgeable and helped us to a treasury trove of items. ย And to say the least, everything was just wonderful! Now: "TEMPORARILY CLOSED" - we can only hope!
Be the first to ReplyI've been here twice, once for lunch and once for dinner.
The experiences were polar opposites, with the lunch being very nice, calm, delicious. We shared the Tunisian Sandwich and Eggplant Sabich, and it was so good and we had very accommodating service. The lunch menu prices were very reasonable for DTLA, but the dinner menu prices we're significantly more expensive for extremely small portions. On the other hand, my dinner experience was the most uncomfortable dining experience I've had in a long time. I don't know if it was a fluke occasion, but the waitress that was incredibly rude and condescending to me and my friends. We went on a Thursday night without a reservation and waited about 20 minutes for a small single table for three of us. We decided to order a bunch of little appetizers to try since we weren't that hungry and we didn't order any cocktails. The waitress had a judgmental and rude expression on her face the rest of the night. My friends and I were enjoying ourselves talking, and she kept interrupting us frequently to ask if we were going to order anything else. We politely thanked her and said that we were fine for right now, and she walked away grumpily. She proceeded to do this the rest of the night and made us all feel uncomfortable because her animosity and annoyance towards us was clearly visible. This bad experience definitely tainted my view of this restaurant, and I don't think I will be back again for dinner, but I might go again for the unique Israeli lunch options.
