Stopped in for early dinner after riding the West Ashley Greenway. The crispy brussel sprouts and shrimp and grits were the bomb. Definitely a 5 of 5 on the star system

Every time my parents visit from out of town, the want to come here. My dad loves the shrimp & grits but I'm obsessed with the fried green tomato po boy. You can't go wrong here!!

From the moment you step foot into Glass Onion in West Ashley, you're enveloped in a warm, inviting atmosphere that feels like a comforting hug from a beloved friend. The country diner ambiance, coupled with the quirky charm of the waitstaff, immediately sets the stage for a dining experience that's both familiar and exciting. Now, let's talk about the star of the show: the fried chicken sandwich. If there's one dish that's a must-try at Glass Onion, it's this culinary masterpiece. Just the thought of it makes my mouth water. The chicken is hot and crispy, with a golden exterior that hints at its recent journey through the fryer. Yet, miraculously, there's no greasy residue in sight--just pure perfection on a bun. Speaking of the bun, it's soft and chewy, providing the ideal vessel to hold together the succulent chicken and all its accompanying flavors. The buttermilk sauce adds a creamy richness, while the crisp lettuce provides a refreshing contrast. And let's not forget about those house-made pickles--tangy, crunchy, and downright addictive. Whether you choose to adorn your sandwich with them or savor them on their own, they're an absolute must-try. And to round out the perfect meal, don't overlook the house-made chips. A recent addition to the menu, these chips strike the perfect balance between crisp and chewy, offering a satisfying crunch with every bite. All jokes aside, my culinary adventures at Glass Onion have led me to explore over half of their menu offerings, and I can confidently say that I've been 100% satisfied every time. While the fried chicken sandwich remains a standout, there are other gems that deserve recognition. For instance, their shrimp and grits dish is a true Southern classic done to perfection, with plump, succulent shrimp nestled atop creamy, flavorful grits. And don't even get me started on the fried Brussels sprouts--crispy, caramelized, and downright addictive. However, as much as I adore their current offerings, I do have a humble request for my beloved Glass Onion heroes: Please consider adding more vegetable options to the side dishes. As a Southerner who's not particularly fond of collard greens, I often find myself yearning for a bit of green on my plate. Whether it's green beans, broccoli, or any other veggie variety, just a little extra greenery would go a long way in helping me walk out of the restaurant with a tad less guilt. Overall, Glass Onion continues to impress with its comforting, flavorful fare and welcoming atmosphere. It's a place where locals feel right at home and visitors are treated like cherished guests--a true gem in the heart of West Ashley.

We had read good reviews, but never took the opportunity to visit The Glass Onion until tonight. We will return soon! A casual atmosphere, the service was quite good. My wife enjoyed grilled trout, collard greens and arugula. I opted for cornmeal fried trout, Charleston red rice, and cole slaw. Everything was excellent. After sampling my wife's collards, I regretted not having ordered them. We look forward to a return visit as soon as possible.

Be the first to ReplyWe were on our way to Charleston and getting hungry.
We are so glad yelp pointed us to the glass onion. The corn bread is divine - it's like a dessert actually. Mashed potatoes are super creamy. Fried Catfish and shrimp are excellent - well seasoned, not greasy/oily. The star of the show that no one expected was the Brussels sprouts - unlikely that they're still a vegetable but holy cow, when you fry them and toss them in cheese and garlic aioli, they become a flavor bomb!
Be the first to ReplyIt's predictable and locally sourced .
The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The menu varies dependent on the availability of food

Be the first to ReplyI highly recommend The Glass Onion because my experience
I highly recommend The Glass Onion because my experience here was perfect! Although there was a small crowd waiting to be seated at noon on a Saturday, we were quickly added to the list, had a comfortable seat in the "lobby", and then led to our table within 10 minutes. The place stayed very busy the whole time we were there. Our service was excellent. Javonna took care of us. I recommend the Brussels Sprouts appetizer. You'll be glad you did! We had a healthy portion that we devoured right in time for our lunches. I recommend the Fried Green Tomato Pimento Cheese Po Boy. So good! I was alarmed at first by how big the sandwich was but the bread was so light yet crisp and I had no trouble polishing off the entire sandwich. We had no room for desert but will be back to check out other menu items. Glad I chose The Glass Onion to have lunch at.
Be the first to ReplyWe have wanted to try this place for a long time.
It was great! We went with a group of six. We highly recommend the shrimp and grits, catfish, onion soup, and fried chicken sandwich, and brussell sprouts appetizer. And the desserts! Oh My! Red velvet cake, bread pudding with whiskey sauce and chocolate peanut butter pie! We will return!

The Glass Onion, reviewed by the infamous Guy Fieri, is a unique spot that I would recommend for anyone wanting fresh farm to table southern food. That's what it is. It's a simple restaurant who knows it's audience. It just personally wasn't for me. Their menu changes daily, so all you anxious people out there who like to look at the menu beforehand, just an fyi. We had an AMAZING waitress, and everyone was beyond friendly. The food itself was warm and timely.
Be the first to ReplyThis was our second time trying the restaurant.
The first time was ok, this time was excellent. We started out with the fried Brussels sprouts appetizer . My wife had the green tomatoes po boy sandwich and thoroughly enjoyed it. I had the pork belly, smashed potatoes and field peas was excellent. We shared a bread pudding for dessert. I am so glad we gave it another try, we will definitely be back.
Be the first to ReplyWe stopped in for lunch in the middle of the afternoon
We stopped in for lunch in the middle of the afternoon after our earlier plans didn't work out. This is a small restaurant with a few tables and booths. But, don't let that fool you. The food was amazing! I had the fried green tomatoes and pimento cheese. This pimento cheese was far superior to any in the area. It complimented the tomatoes. This cheese tasted like it came straight out of your grandmom"s kitchen. I also had a side of butter beans which was an excellent addition to my tomatoes. My daughter had the chicken fingers and fries. Excellent food and very nice people. We also asked the owner/manager, Pete, for a recommendation for live music. He suggested DIG in The Park. His friend was playing. Wow!! What a great night we had. Hans Wenzel was an amazing musician. Thank you!
Be the first to ReplyI ordered shrimp and grits.
If you like wet soupy grits this is the place for you! If you like dry cheesy grits DONT come here as of 8:8:22.

I have someone visiting from California and this was a must go! Fried shrimp was the goal.... Their Shrimp Po Boy is the best! I also had to share the cornbread experience of course, I'll drive 30 minutes just to purchase 2 pieces of cornbread. Miss not being able to get the deviled eggs tho.

I have driven past this place for years and finally stopped in. So glad I did. The service was very fast and friendly. I ordered the beet salad and shrimp and grits. Both were delicious. Beets were perfect as they still had some body and the goat cheese with candied pecans made it a perfect match. The shrimp was also cooked perfectly with a little touch of spice from the sausage. I also order the Cocktail for a Cause which was a watermelon lemonade. I was worried it would be too sweet but it was very refreshing. I will be stopping more often!
