The Herbfarm is a fantastic restaurant and experience.
This is the best place to go for any special occasion, the food and service is spectacular. Then the interior is stunning and elegant, but you also feel very comfortable. Although Seattle is casual, you will in here better if you dress up a bit. If you do go, I recommend staying at the Willows Inn. It is a long meal and you want to drink all of the great paired beverages and nice to be able to have a small stroll to your room. I have been here a few times and it was fabulous each time. They continually rotate the menu to go with the seasons and availability of fresh food, but each visit was just perfect. I did a detailed review of food in past review, but it must have disappeared. I was just going to post a few photos and share some updates, but have waited too long and forgot details. I do know we both had the best time and strongly recommend people to visit here if they have never done it.
Be the first to ReplyUnderwhelming.
Kind of a big let down. The portion sizes were too small and the food just didn't hit the mark. Overall, the dishes were bland and unremarkable. 3 stars because the service was fantastic but, for $900, we expected to be wowed and leave satisfied. Canlis, Eden Hill or Cafe Juanita are far better and much less expensive.
Be the first to ReplyI wanted to love this place.
I was so excited to get a reservation here and have the whole experience for my birthday. Unfortunately, it did not excite me the way I had anticipated. The service was amazing. The ambiance was warm and inviting. The wine pairings we had were awesome. I truly enjoyed the wine. The pinot blanc was new for me and I thought was wonderful. However, when I say I came for the food, I wish that were true. The food was meh...we left after the fifth course. The initial snack of salmon roe and crackers was too fishy for my liking. The first course of dungeness crab bao and soup was kind of boring. I don't particularly think this crab has much flavor anyways, but the bao filled with crab tasted like bread. The soup's texture was strange with the addition of the quinoa to give it some heft, but I thought the flavor was good-not great. Second course was the bread and it was probably the best thing I ate all evening. Third course was sturgeon with a horseradish cream. I liked the cream, but I was not a fan of the sturgeon's rather tough, dry texture. Fourth course was a foie gras and truffle dish that had a slimy texture offset with some foam. It tasted rich as expected for foie gras and truffles, but I couldn't get over the mouth feel of the entire dish. The fifth and final course we stayed for was a purely vegetable dish that didn't scream anything amazing. It was frankly pretty lackluster. My husband looked so uncomfortable. A man with a zest for good food couldn't get out of there fast enough. I wanted to give the next course a chance, but when I saw the presentation at the table over, it was time to go. I truly appreciate the talents of those working at the HerbFarm. It was apparent their knowledge and appreciation for food and wine was top notch, but the food just didn't hit the right notes for me. I don't know if I am going to have to "eat" the price of this dinner after skipping out early, but it was really a disappointment for me. My husband and I still had an amazing birthday celebration despite the culinary letdown, but The HerbFarm didn't live up to the hype for us.

Spend the money, get the wine pairing. Talk to everyone, the service is impressive and perfect! The Food is a journey to another land. Let them feed you. Don't fight it. Just do it. It's beautiful inside and this place transports you to another world. So like I said, just do it. Don't bring picky people who will Complain and are picky eaters. Leave them at home. You will thank me later!

It rivaled out night out at Alinea in Chicago. The food with the wine pairings was incredible and the service sublime.

Unforgettable---and I don't say that lightly. Yes it's expensive and I was worried it would be more hype than substance but we were both bowled over by the entire experience. Astounding nine courses over four and a half hours with smart wine paring. Warm, cozy and unpretentious. Perfect service. Some of the best food we've ever had. The entire night exceeded our expectations. Kudos to the Herbfarm and their remarkable team.

Came for a Saturday night dinner in the winter and it's almost like a show. You need a reservation to dine here so go to the website and make the reservation. You have an option of sitting at a communal table where you meet other people or a private table. Both are great option, it just depends on what you are in the mood for. The chef and sommelier start the evening off by going over the menu and the wine pairings and there was a guitarist playing in the dining room. The ambiance is awesome and is the service. The menu changes seasonally. Our meal was a winter menu and the food was great. The lamb and sturgeon were my two favorites with the bao and broth a close third. The palate cleanser and desserts were all very good. Overall it was an enjoyable meal in a pleasant setting and worth the splurge.

If the Herbfarm was a person taking me out on a date I would have left the date thinking "omg you are one of a kind and I hope you ask me out again!!! " I've lived here long enough to know the lore of the Herbfarm. I'm not shy about shelling out for a special occasion meal but for some reason kept hesitating at the Herbfarm. I wish I'd been here years ago!!! The whole experience from start to finish was perfection. You are going to receive a level of dining that you can't experience at many other restaurants in western Washington (maybe 1-2 others??). The Herbfarm was heads and tails above anything else ever had in the area. The attention to detail and personalization was outstanding. I really felt like I was on a date and the whole staff was woo-ing me Especially after watching The Bear, I have a whole new level of appreciation for chefs. Not the obsessive fan girl/celebrity chef experience but a true admiration for their dedication to the craft. You see that through and through here. I won't play by play the whole meal but I'll say it was so incredibly enjoyable that we can't wait to do it again. A must. Absolute must.

This is my fourth time over the years eating here, the first three were wonderful but I was very disappointed this time. Because the menu stays fairly similar through the week (I'd checked the posted menus in the days before we went) I expected them to have things down seamlessly. Wine servings seemed smaller. Three times my dates and I were slightly pleasantly tipsy by the time the madeira was served at the end (which it no longer is). The hotel was full so we ubered up there with the expectation that we would not want to drive, but you can rest assured that driving ourselves home would have been fine. On my other visits I liked every single item. Two of the dishes were under-seasoned and bland, and one was over-seasoned to the point of being unpleasant. The first dish was delicious and interesting, the bread was amazing. My biggest complaint was the black cod, which is my favorite fish in the world. The previous dish, an onion potato salad had been wood roasted and it had a delicious rich smoky oiliness, so I was excited that the black cod was also wood roasted in the same oven but there was no flavor of smoke at all, no hint of salt, it was just a bland white fish with no flavor or texture, and the sauce wasn't plentiful or flavorful enough to mask that. It's the only time in my life I haven't had a great experience with this fish at a restaurant or when cooking it at home. The roast lamb was really nice, but the wild rice side was served arancini style, and it was greasy, and didn't make any sense texture wise to serve with the dish, it didn't add anything to it. Desert included huckleberry pie with candy cap mushrooms to sweeten it. Those mushrooms were so overpowering with maple flavor that it brought back my childhood memory of drinking ipecac syrup - I couldn't taste huckleberries at all. I tried a couple of bites both my date and I found it disgusting, which was a really bad way to end the meal. I find it hard to believe that the dishes are being tasted and the chef and crew expected some of the items to turn out like they did. Service wise it had a few downsides - a server said they would bring a second glass of a wine that was really liked and they never came back. They have the teas and coffee, and I love the dandelion tea more than anything, but they poured me a small cup and didn't leave us the presses that still had quite a bit of tea in them (and I can't seem to buy it from them online anymore). After dinner we had gotten our coats, gone to the restroom, and were walking out the door when they came to find us to give us a parting gift of apple butter. That was just really odd as they knew people were leaving and presumably could have caught people as they exited the dining room. For the price I am going to be nit-picky, and I'm really disappointed since this was my one big splurge of the year, and didn't expect such a big let down after my other experiences there..
Be the first to ReplyNever heard from the owners or management.
I figure, they got my money, and thus all is settled. Again, I think that the Herb Farm should be avoided.

This was the most amazing meal I've ever had!!! The evening starts with a complimentary cocktail and a tour of the garden and wine cellar. Next the chef and sommelier explain each dish and wine pairing. The presentation of the table setting with personalized framed place settings and the presentation of each dish is superb. The service is impeccable! The food is exquisite! At the end of the evening they presented us with a farewell gift of salad dressing mix with herbs from their garden. I highly recommend the Herbfarm for any special occasion!
Be the first to ReplySuch a fantastic experience.
Everything they serve you is fresh from their garden and made with such detail and love. The fact that you have name tags at a table and they seat you with people you have never met really gives the place even more value in my eyes. The sense of community by bringing people together over a savory 9 course meal added so much more to the experience for me. Thank you Mac and Herbfarm for this unforgettable meal.

A transformative meal that brought me to heights that I can never climb down from again. At first glance, this restaurant may seem quaint, or even cute, but after you've lifted the veil you can see that this is no blushing bride. She is truly a matriarch of food divinity. Admiring the artwork, perusing the grounds, listening to the stories behind the food, drinking the wine, listening to the live music, and even eating the food; all breathtaking experiences that have left me almost disappointed in ordinary sustenance. We were gifted with endless beverages. Red and white wine, hoppy and fruity beers, fruit blends, native tea and coffee that romanced all my senses. Every conversation with the chef and the sommelier was welcomed, candid and meaningful. The eleven course meal was the dinner of a lifetime. The caviar and bread appetizer was nutty and bursting with umami. Fresh and sweet shellfish with delicate bites of root vegetables. A small box of two breads and butter were lovingly baked and presented. With just a single bite I experienced a diverse blend of textures and flavors. Tender vegetables steeped in a bold broth. A vegetable schnitzel that was atop a satisfying piece of fatty pork collar. The sturgeon was unapologetically contrasted with black pudding and creamy greens. Dark flavors of lamb and light sweet syrup climaxed the savory portion of the meal. The smooth transition to a cheese parfait and sorbet opened my palette gently and smothered me with culinary delight. Ending the night with praline and another sorbet sent my inner dessert-soul into a cerebral state. Although the mixture of truffles and truffles felt more like a pun than a finale, it was enjoyable nonetheless.
Be the first to Reply5/5 experience, 4/5 food, 5/5 wine pairings.
The grounds are absolutely gorgeous (kudos to the gardener), and the service is impeccable. The staff makes you feel incredibly welcome, and they are so attentive that it feels like they are anticipating your needs. Most of the courses were great (the bread service was one of the best I've had), but there were at least three that were underwhelming in taste or substance. For example, one of the desserts was five berries on top of crushed ice. Regardless, I would absolutely return for another opportunity to be treated like royalty by the warm, professional staff and to enjoy a decadent multi-course meal.

I'm writing this review a month too late but better late than never. My husband and I decided to go to The Herbfarm to celebrate our 3rd year wedding anniversary and Wow what an experience!! From the moment we walked in someone came over to greet us and walk us to our table. We were at one of the community tables so there was going to be 4 more people at our table. They had a small frame with a message to us wishing us a happy 3rd year anniversary. Ok nice touch! As the other 2 couples arrived we began introducing ourselves and quickly realized that we are all celebrating something on the same day!!! I love that they ask enough questions when you make the reservation that they can try and put a group together that shares something in common. The service was incredible. You feel as though they can provide you with whatever you need. Once we had the first course the chef and all staff came out while the chef gave us an overview of the menu and some background info and at each course the person serving would announce the dish and would answer any questions we may have. The drink pairings for each course was spot on and fantastic which I'm not surprised with since you can tell the entire establishment prides themselves for their art as they should. By the time I had course #5 I was starting to feel full but had to power through because every dish had its own magic. The complexity of each dish was beyond what I've experience yet it all seemed so simple and effortless. Once we finished with the desert course they offered coffee or tea. I chose to have tea and picked their birthday tea which was recommended. The server informed me that the birthday tea comes with a gift so I got a cute little jar of local honey. This experience is seamless so you will not receive an actual check but they will charge your card plus 20% gratuity. Honestly with their level of service I think that's not enough. As we were leaving the restaurant they handed us a small container of Saffron as a gift. I can honestly say it was one of the best experiences we've had. From service to food it was fantastic. They are truly Artists.
Be the first to ReplyWe managed to get a reservation for our anniversary night
We managed to get a reservation for our anniversary night and loved the experience of eating at Herbfarm. This place is all about the overall experience and great wines paired with locally grown fresh ingredients. We were welcomed with a parsnip soup as we entered and waited to be seated. A chef was explaining some raw ingredients to the waiting people, we sat at the fireplace while we waited. You can ask for a drink while you wait and they will get you a wine. The environment was warm and cozy throughout. They let couples sit at a table for 4 so you can side by side while enjoying the experience. From there the next 4 hours food and wine kept on coming and we kept on eating. We felt the quantity of food was great and they did offer us extra bread in case we wanted more but we felt full enough that we did not need extra. Pro-tip eat the whole bread they give you else you might end up hungry. For the next 4 hours great service and great food and nothing to complain about.
Be the first to ReplyI am going to say no.
Just no. There were some really great parts of the meal. But not enough to ever go back. The portions were not worth lifting a fork. They were one or two bites. You had to cut them REALLY small to get more than that. There was a white fish dish that was...what's the word...undercooked. Their "wagyu" beef was lukewarm and because it wasn't served hot the sauce was way too salty. Mine was actually cold in the center. When I think wagyu, I think a piece of meat well marbled and seared hot. What we got was room temperature raw meat with a salty gravy. When I think Herbfarm...I expect phenomenally high quality and what I got was meh. I was hungry and there was almost nothing on the plate. There was no real flavor, value or care given. Overall, the service was ok. There were a couple of excellent wait staff. They made the meal better with their humor and attitude. Some should have stayed home. It would have been a better experience for both parties. The only thing outstanding were the vegetables. They were fresh and some were flavorful. The issue was that there weren't enough of them to keep a rabbit alive much less a person. And I will say the only reason they got two stars is the focaccia bread. It was outstanding. Will I ever recommend this place...no. This was my 12th anniversary dinner and I had to stop at fast food for dinner because bottom line is that I was HUNGRY! No restaurant patron should ever leave hungry at $300+ per meal. Someone has a great business model resting on the glory of the past. I came here 20 years ago and had a MEAL. It was a culinary life event. This was an afterthought that drug on too long and was just sad. I am afraid this place believes too much in its own hype. I guess they only promise an experience...just not that it will be a good one.
Be the first to ReplyThe food is good, if somewhat weird, but I'm not certain
The food is good, if somewhat weird, but I'm not certain it's worth the extravagant price. The pairings are generally good as well. The atmosphere is interesting. The space is very nicely appointed and it's a very comfortable dining experience. The overall experience is unique, where they describe the farm itself and talk a lot about the meal. A friend of mine referred to it as the "Disneyland of food", which, if that appeals to you it's great, but if not, it is kind of a ding on the overall experience. Recommended, if you can afford it. There are better restaurants for cheaper.

Being new to the area I hadn't heard of The Herbfarm until someone at work mentioned they had a reservation here that they couldn't make anymore- after doing some quick research and needing to find a last minute reservation for our anniversary dinner, I'm so glad this chance opportunity fell into our lap. All of the ingredients are fresh, as to be expected when you can see and taste the herbs firsthand before the meal. Many of the other reviews mentioned the word "experience" and I wholeheartedly agree. What stood out to me most was not only the food itself but the attention to detail and execution of the entire team during the meal service. Everyone from the head chef to wait staff is willing to do whatever it takes (from bringing out meals, pouring water, or anticipating a visit to the restroom and holding open a door) to let you just relax and enjoy the food, drinks, and your shared company. The open kitchen has a curtain to block "the show" during the pre-meal introduction, and for good reason- being able to watch the kitchen staff at work afterwards is a delight.I can't wait to go back again and experience other seasonal menus!

My fiancé surprised me for my birthday and took me to Herbfarm. It was the most amazing culinary experience I have ever had!! The farm is super cute and I loved how you could eat everything from their garden. The staff was lovely and very accommodating. The food was absolutely delicious and so fresh. The additional wine & beer pairing was also a must. I have friends who have never chosen to try herbfarm based on it being over priced in their minds. However, I would disagree say it is well worth every penny! If you get the opportunity to eat at and experience herbfarm especially for a special occasion do not hesitate!
