Beautiful setting, decent food, spotty service.
This was our second visit to the renovated tea room. Same experiences both times. Very nice overall but the service really needs tweaking. The hosts are just not very welcoming or even friendly. We arrived at our reserved time on the dot but waited over 15 minutes to be seated even though there were plenty of tables. When we inquired the host sort of shrugged as though we were annoying her. Same experience last time. They really need to retrain or replace the host staff. The server, on the other hand, was very friendly and kind. We did feel rushed, and the check was plopped on the table before we finished eating. Overall, you go for the decent food and beautiful setting and try to ignore the service blips.
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced, mediocre tea; terrible management
I went to tea at the Huntington Gardens' new tea house with 28 friends on Friday, December 15. The tea and snacks were fine overall: the Huntington signature tea is good, the rose tea is delicious, the earl grey creme is excellent, and the greedy tea with blueberry is very good. We had two varieties of scones: a weirdly sweet butterscotch scone that was not pleasant at all and a decent orange cranberry scone. The scones were served with fig jam, a too-sweet lemon curd, and chantilly cream (instead of the more traditional clotted cream). The sandwiches were fine. They were largely dry and mostly bread. The folks at the Huntington would be well-served visiting the Getty or other similar teas to see what the competition offers. (Spoiler alert: the Getty is far superior, at a similar price point.) The sweets were also just okay. And when I asked for honey for my tea (instead of sugar), I was brought out packets of Heinz. HEINZ HONEY. AT THE HUNTINGTON. For shame. The entire thing just kind of fell flat. We also ordered a cheese platter for $15, for which they used really basic cheeses and some dry toast. It was fairly disappointing. To accompany the tea, 4 of the 6 of us at our table ordered soup. The soup was on the thicker side and it was not particularly flavorful or well-seasoned. It just kind of fell flat. It was also not as velvety as soup often is. It looked and tasted like it was blended but not taken through a sieve. All of that said, we were there largely for the company of our friends and for the lovely scenery, so we wouldn't have docked the Huntington for any of the above were it not for what happened at the end. Even though we told the receptionist at check-in that two members of our party would not be able to attend (one was in the hospital and the other was with a friend who was dying of cancer), WE WERE CHARGED FOR THE TWO PEOPLE WHO WERE NOT THERE. Better still, we were charged without notice, after they presented us with a bill that was correct for our table and did not include the two missing friends. So they made it seem like they were charging the right amounts, but when they brought our credit cards back, the charges were greatly in excess of what was on the bill they had brought to our table. This is because they had unilaterally decided to add not only the charges for our two friends who couldn't make it, but also for another table entirely. WHAT?! When we brought this to their attention, they became belligerent. The manager on duty, Gina, told us that we were "lucky" that they served us at all, adding that they did us a favor by accommodating our group. Nevermind that we reserved months in advance, and nevermind that they're in the business of ... serving tea in the tea room, and we weren't any different than the other guests at the tea room at that time. This clearly demonstrated to us what she thought of her job and the tea room at the Huntington. So much for customer service, and for decency. I don't recommend the Huntington, I don't recommend the overpriced, mediocre tea service, I don't recommend the Tea Room, and I absolutely do not recommend Gina. I do recommend baking classes for the Tea Room, and I recommend classes on customer service for Gina and anyone of her ilk. No thank you.
Be the first to ReplyGood and bad
It was a pleasant experience, the food was good and the tea (Huntington blend) delicious. But it is very expensive and one of the main problems is that "Open Table", the website for reserving a table, DOES NOT WORK. We came and had a table just by chance. We wanted to reserve and come back with our grandson. It was impossible to reserve a table, even in one or two months!
Be the first to ReplyThere's room for improvement
If the Huntington's tea room weren't at the Huntington, I'd give it three stars. I'm adding the extra star because being able to walk around the gardens and galleries before and after tea adds immensely to the experience. I had tea at the Huntington yesterday with two of my sisters-in-law. We were seated in the Herb Room very close to our reservation time. Our server, Yasmine, was attentive and enthusiastic, as were others who added hot water to our tea pots and cleared dishes. Our tea was excellent. Unfortunately, these pluses were balanced by some big minuses. The Herb Room was very cold, loud and plainly decorated. The food was ok but not great, and the experience wasn't worth the price. (We got the cheaper alternative, with no Prosecco, and with tip it cost about $80 per person.) I wish that the Huntington would release more tables to reservations. Reservations are nearly impossible to get. (We had gotten lucky that one had opened up a few weeks ago.) There were lots of people who'd walked up to the tea room entrance asking if there was space for them, and then they milled around the echoing lobby as they waited. Many were dressed in t-shirts and shorts, which made the tea room experience seem a bit less special. I've had tea at the Huntington many times over the last 30 years, so it's sad to see that the newly-remodeled tea room isn't all I'd hoped it would be. But I think that these points are fixable, and I hope the Huntington is paying attention.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Place to take a Break.
This is a great place to take a break from exploring the Huntington Gardens. Excellent variety of food, drink and snacks.
Be the first to ReplyNice place to have lunch at
Most of the traditional lunch locations are closed currently. This is a wonderful place to have any kind of lunch that suits your pallet.
Be the first to ReplyGreat service, yummy food!
I was wary of going here, due to all the bad reviews. But I was so pleasantly surprised! The service was excellent! I ordered traditional tea, and loved it! The food on the trays were great. Now, there was a couple of items that I wasn't fond of, but that wasn't there fault...just not my "cup of tea" - ha, ha. And when they brought the tray, I thought I'd leave hungry, but I was full! I wouldn't hesitate to come back. Yes, the $37 for traditional tea, along with the $29 entrance fee to the gardens is very steep! So, I'd only return as a special occasion, but I enjoyed it immensely!

Much improved since our last visit over 3 years ago, so bad I didn't want to go back. The service was impeccable, food very good. We did not have a reservation, but were there early. It rapidly filled, but we were not rushed. Not up to the standard of the Balmoral Edinburgh or London places, but not too bad. We would go again. Make a reservation, especially for more than 2 people.
Be the first to ReplyThe tea and snacks were very good
The tea was good and the snack tray was very good and filling. We had the traditional tea service with rose black tea amd jasmine blueberry also. The snack tray had scones, chocolate, finger sandwiches, and filo dough treats. The jasmine blueberry tea was better than expected since fruit flavored teas usually disappoint A lot to spend for tea and snacks but for a special occasion, its worth it.
Be the first to ReplyGreat English tea time with pastries
Great English tea time with lovely acorns and small sandwiches and sweets. This is definitely a good place to go after church. Our church, Vintage Pasadena at Hamilton Element School is only about 4 minutes from this place. We decided to pay a visit to the library and have afternoon tea at the tea room. There are two tea set options, one with only the sandwiches and pastries for $35 and the other with caveat and champagne for $60. We chose the cheaper option. But we were so full after the devouring the teaser tower. My favorite were the Brie cheese cracker and the smoke salmons sandwiches. My wife loves their acorns. In fact she looks forward to the scorns very time we go to this tea house. This tea room also offers varieties of teas from all time favorite English teas to ORIENTAL green tea with fruits. I chose the Jasmine Blueberry tea. This tea is absolutely fabulous and smell so good with jasmine fragrance. This place is very hectic on weekends. Even though we had a reservation, we still have to wait for half and hour. So go early with your reservation to secure your seats. It's lovely roam around the library afterward to enjoy the beauty of the flowers and the different theme gardens
