A Superb Hotel
Absolutely superb food; Excellent accommodation; totally professional staff. It would be hard to improve on anything...(possibly the music over dinner). Classy and up-market, without being overly posh/stuffy
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing return to an old favourite.
We have happy memories of the Idle Rocks, which has long been one of our favourite hotels and on our last visit we enjoyed the most delicious and exciting food, so we chose it for my birthday weekend. We had a package deal, which included 3 nights accommodation , an a la carte dinner at the St Mawe's Hotel, an a la carte dinner at the Idle Rocks and a tasting menu at the Idle Rocks. Our double room was excellent, with a spacious and well-equipped bathroom, fully up to the standards of the "Relais and Chateau" chain to which this hotel belongs. The staff, who were mostly young, were uniformly helpful and pleasant; any request was met with alacrity and charm. Sadly, the food, which had been one of our main reasons for choosing this hotel, failed to live up to expectations. At the St Mawe's Hotel, we had one good meal (Korean Cauliflower with nicely-cooked Cauliflower and a zingy sauce and a good Pork dish) and one bad (Fried Chicken which had been cooked in Oil at too low a temperature and was consequently soggy (and barely lukewarm) and a distinctly pedestrian Fish Pie). We were hoping that the Idle Rocks would restore our faith in the cuisine, but it was not to be. On Saturday night, when we had our 3-course meal, the dining room was absolutely full, which meant upwards of 50 covers. There were 6 waiting staff, and a wine waiter, who should have been able to cope with this number and it was not their fault that they did not. They were as charming and helpful as ever but uncoordinated. A dining room of this size requires a Maître d' or someone to direct and control the service and maintain a watching brief and this was lacking. As a result, our 3-course meal was served by four different waiters (not including the wine waiter, who made a single brief appearance) and we had an hour-long gap between the main course and the dessert. The tasting menu on our last evening was frankly disappointing. An amuse-bouche was nondescript; there is no point in having an amuse-bouche unless it sets the taste buds dancing. Tagliatelle could have done with a couple more passes through the machine. Consequently, it was thick and almost chewy. It had also been over-enthusiastically dressed with Truffle Oil. This was doubly unfortunate as the previous dish in the menu had also featured Truffle Oil to an unsubtle extent. To have two consecutive dishes on a tasting menu dominated by the same ingredient is not good planning. A Duck disk was superb, but by this time it was too late to save the day. The food here is not cheap (you wouldn't expect it to be) and at these prices one tends to be unforgiving. Will I go back? Sadly, I doubt it.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful Stay!
We were celebrating my wife’s birthday and stayed for 2-nights and dined-in. Clearly a great deal of thought, attention and money has been spent at the Idle Rocks. Staff were all terrific from the initial welcome (thank you Yvonne) through to departure. The room was immaculate and suited the environment perfectly. The food was exceptional and the menu is clearly crafted to obtain a Michelin Star in the near future - the tasting menu certainly wasn’t cheap, but the quality of the produce and skill of the kitchen fully justified the price. We have family who live locally and we’re sure that we’ll be returning.
Be the first to ReplySplendid surprise occasion
We wanted to celebrate my wife’s sixtieth birthday with a surprise family get together.. We chose one of our favourite Cornish hotels - the Idle Rocks in beautiful St Mawes, with one of the best hotel outlooks in Cornwall. It overlooks St Mawes harbour. The rooms are comfortable, spacious and modern with a roomy en suite and a juliette balcony giving you those splendid sea views. At all times the staff are very friendly, courteous and helpful and create a relaxed atmosphere which is what you want in a break like this. The restaurant (as is the whole hotel) is very tastefully decorated with again wonderful views as you enjoy your meal. And the dinner was a foodie delight! Having heard that the Head Chef, Dorian Janmaat, was formerly one of the main head chefs at Raymond Blanc’s iconic Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons (which we visited earlier- to celebrate the end of Lockdown1!) we had high hopes. We were not disappointed - It was certainly a fine dining experience with tremendous flavour, texture and superb presentation. It would not surprise me if at some stage Idle Rocks gain a Michelin star - it certainly deserves to become a renowned foodie destination if it carries on like this. The breakfasts are also extremely good. A very enjoyable experience.
Be the first to ReplyNew Years Eve. Fab Food Fab staff Fab guests!!!
New years Eve for 4. What a fantastic place to be. It is my favourite and I'm lucky enough to go a few times a year. The food is superb, Really really well organised. Thankyou so much to Dane and the rest of the excellent team. Hope to come back soon
Be the first to ReplyTasty but pricey
We went for dinner over Christmas. Simple but good menu. Interesting wine list with some left field picks. Very friendly and accommodating staff. Everyone gave the food top marks. Overall an enjoyable experience. Only caveat is it is definitely London prices. £90 each set 3 course menu, wine and drinks on top.
Be the first to ReplyProbably the best hotel we have stayed in. The complete package
We've stayed in some pretty special places, and OK we were desperate to get away, but this is the most amazing hotel. Nothing is too much bother. It's not over flunkied or over glamorous. It'd just simply lovely. As usual it's the staff that makes a stay special and they were all special. And the food is amazing. Sea views and log fires. Incredibly comfy beds. A view of the harbour. We spent hours watching the little ferry to Falmouth arrive and leave. Gorgeous. Thank you

Myself and my husband returned to the Idle Rocks for our 5th stay and as always it was perfect. a friendly and warm welcome on arrival, our bags taken to our room so we could relax with a drink. Dane welcomed us and remembered us from our stay in February. he took our order and then Dan brought our drinks out, i learnt soon he's an excellent bar tender, creating some superb cocktails!! on our first evening we had dinner at the Victory Inn, local pub only a few moments walk from the hotel. we then went to the cinema at the St Mawes Hotel to enjoy a movie. Each morning at the Idle Rocks we enjoyed an excellent breakfast. Hot food aswell as the buffet table. The waiting staff always friendly, chatty, yet professional. 2nd night we had dinner at the hotel and enjoyed the Signature Menu. stunning plates of food and very tasty. Also enjoyed some pre dinner cocktails thanks to Dan! We checked out on the Monday morning always sad to leave. We love the Idle Rocks and it's truly one of our happy places, where we feel so well looked after and we can truly relax. We want to say a MASSIVE thank you to all the team. Alexandra and Yvonne on reception, Dane and Dan in the restaurant and bar, Bethany (who we got to see the day we arrived). All the kitchen staff and housekeeping. Everyone who was part of our stay basically! We look forward to our 6th stay in 2023 and will be in touch soon to book! The Idle Rocks is truly one of the best hotels we've ever stayed in and we always look forward to returning.
Be the first to ReplyUnexpected fabulous find for a cream tea in St Mawes.
Excellent service and delicious cream tea. We popped in to this very welcoming hotel when there was very little else open. We were shown through the lovely dining room, past a superbly decorated modern lounge which looked very comfortable with a log fire burning in the hearth, to the terrace overlooking St Mawes harbour. Service was exceptional. Nothing was too much trouble. The barman even came out to offer us a blanket as it was a bit windy. Thoroughly recommend a visit- the Michelin star menu looked exquisite too. We will be back, hopefully for a stay next time.
Be the first to ReplyBlissful stay
My husband, daughter and I have just returned from a wonderful stay at The Idle Rocks. A spectacular setting even in the stormy depths of November. Impeccable interiors, the aesthetic is flawless. We soent a lot of time parked in front of the roaring fire and looking out of the water - bliss! We initially booked for 2 nights but extended for an additional 2 as we were enjoying ourselves so much. Travelling with a one year old is always tricky but Yvonne and the rest of the team were superb. They have an excellent kids room set up - with toys, dvds, books etc - everything you could need to occupy a little one. We stayed in room 20 with beautiful views over the harbour. A cot was placed in the room with lovely individual mini pillow and duvet for the little one - a very nice touch. Breakfasts were first class and we enjoyed a number of different light bites and cream tea in the hotel over our stay - all delicious and the service was flawless. St Mawes itself is a beautiful village and well located for seeing the sights of Cornwall. Can’t recommend highly enough.
Be the first to Replywhat a shame...spoilt by rude front of house
I booked for a birthday treat...as non residents staying close by at the Boathouse.. I called and booked the table but noticed that the number on line is the same for the St Mawes Hotel...and the confirmation came from email from St Mawes Hotel. I called again to check that a table had been reserved at the Idle rocks..all good..i was informed. We arrived on time and were told there was no booking at the idle rocks ( really frustating} but a table could be found for us....(as they definately appeared not busy. ) Not sure if from that point we were considered lesser mortals...as other reviews have suggested....but i have to say the treatment from front of house manager appalling...especially after I queried my drink... which did not taste like the Hendriks and tonic I was used too...Lets just say his manner needs some work....he came over with the bottle of Hendriks on his tray... here this is the bottle!! Actually they had added a cucumber flavoured tonic to my drink making it taste different. But his manner was passive agressive to say to least..and tainted the rest of what should have been a great evening.....What I must say is the team surrounding this guy were great and gave a high level of service....and the kitchen team were amazing well done..food was fabulous. All of those guys in the kitchen rely on front of house to make their customers happy...they are the hard working talent and in the current climate no establishment can afford to have unnecessarily unhappy customers.
Be the first to ReplyPure class
Like a home from home, the hotel is pure class.
The food is outstanding and the welcome and service from all the happy employees is genuine and heartfelt.
We have already planned our return for later this summer.
Walk on by if you’re not a resident !
In this world of fact checking ……
Fact - I LOVE this hotel and have done for decades in all its ‘guises’
Fact - it’s style & decor & location is IMPECCABLE
BUT … on a cold wet afternoon when we called in for a coffee and chill out from the appalling weather we were served 2 half full cups of luke warm black coffee - no tray - just set down on the table; then charged £9 for the ‘proviley’ !
Fact - I’d sadly advise anyone to ‘walk on by’ if they are not a resident guest
Blown Away totally
We arrived at this hotel on Thursday the 27th January, we have stayed before many years ago but not under the current ownership, the location is just stunning the hotel forms part of the harbour wall, location Location
We originally found a deal for the hotel whilst looking for a cottage on booking .com the deal was so good I double checked it with the hotels website and it was showing the same deal, so I booked there and then just before Christmas I received an email from booking . Com cancelling my holiday as the hotel had to close for two weeks for essential maintenance I contacted the Hotel direct and was offered a new date but honouring the original deal price and we agreed new dates
On arrival at the hotel I parked at the front and two members of reception staff came out took all our luggage in and to our room, we checked in and were allocated a sea view room with a Juliet balcony
The quality of the room is second to none, huge bed wonderful pillows and with the doors open on the balcony a sea view to die for, we were treated as VIP’s from the moment we arrived the staff are incredible, helpful, friendly and just so welcoming, they are a credit to the hotel I can’t do all the names but Dane, Lucy, Emma, Graham and Yvonne so sorry I can’t do all the names the other girls on reception all the staff in the Restaurant in fact all the staff in the hotel, this is the happiest team I have met anywhere
The people we don’t see the Kitchen team, the food at this hotel is just superb every night we felt like we were the most special people in the building, the food is original and fantastic we were staying for 7 nights and the menu has 5 selections, two nights the chef created special dishes just for us, wonderful
Every breakfast just incredible
, variety, Quality just blown away and as always wonderful service
To conclude, this hotel is top of the tree, never have I stayed anywhere where I and my wife have been made to feel so special, we had the most wonderful week, the food is stupendous, the rooms are incredible with Marshmallow pillows massive beds
This Hotel is second to none, of course it’s not cheap but it is just simply the best
Immaculate food, service and ambience
We stayed here for three nights at the beginning of Jan/end of Feb and it would be very hard to fault anything at all. The food was exceptional, the service from all the staff was courteous, warm and accomodating and the rooms were extremely comfortable with wonderful views across the bay and a huge and very comfortable bed.It really was a perfect stay and I can't recommend the hotel enough. We will definitely return.

What's not to love?!
Outstanding views, fantastic food, comfy sofas, courteous service. I'd love to return to stay for a month in the summer!
Cocktails were recommended as a must, and though the menu was limited, they did not disappoint!
Absolutely Lovely
As with the 'other' hotel across the bay, we always eat here once when we stay in St Mawes.
There was a bit of a scare as we understood that it had closed due to a Covid outbreak over Christmas which must have been a nightmare for the business. Fortunately, we were able to get a table on December 30th in the evening.
We really love it here - the décor, the staff, the views, the ambience and of course the views.
Initial drinks service was a little 'clunky' and staff apologised for a delay and explained that they were still a little short on numbers - Not a problem for us really, we were in no rush!
Food was epic and service thereafter was faultless.
As with the competition across the bay, it's not cheap here but it is most definitely well worth it.
We'll be back again in a few months.

Mixed feelings
Beautiful location. Lovely front of house staff on arrival. The details were a let down. It took four phone calls and numerous emails to get confirmation of my booking. No deposit taken until call number three so got quite concerned. The final call for confirmation to me in writing made me cry. The man I had spoken to three times was very rude to me. Told me he was doing me a favour as we had agreed a discount on our three night stay by including a free meal. I then requested to be put onto the winter rocks deal because it was better than the one he had put me on. When we arrived they had forgotten to put in the sparkling wine, I had to ask. They hadn’t booked us into their restaurants at the times I had requested or even booked us in. Luckily we got in. The seven course dinner was underwhelming. Our monk fish was dried out and tough. I could hear other customers complaining too. The deserts were not special. It was not, in my opinion, a memorable meal. On a positive the staff that we met were so helpful. They made our visit a pleasure. It was the back office that let the hotel down and the poor dinner we received in the hotel. We have had much better tasting menus elsewhere. Breakfast was excellent.
