The Lookout by Gardener's Cottage Edinburgh Reviews from The Last Year
A restaurant recommended by the Michelin Guide can't be that bad, can it?
We thought so. The biggest disappointment of our journey through Scotland, which was not short of culinary disappointments. The disproportionately high price for the meagre menu was probably not due to expensive ingredients. Although the restaurant was almost full, half of the staff had nothing to do ("Never before have so many worked so little") In addition, questionable hygiene: tables and chairs were wiped with the same cloth and then the food was prepared without washing hands That's it. We will definitely never eat in a Scottish restaurant again.
Misty-Mixed Experience
If we could have enjoyed the stunning views of Edinburgh, it would surely enhance the experience. The night we went, the heavy midst socked in the views, and it felt like you were eating a white cube. While there were 'food pleasures' during the 5-plus-course meal, it didn't feel as unique to rate this restaurant as good overall. The restaurant must also let its patrons know how to best arrive at their lookout location. Walking up from Prince Street in the midst is not for the faint of heart. Taxi arrivals and departures should be recommended.
Amazing
Lovely view, great hopitality and food. When our booking changed they really took the effort to with the perfect alternative. It was the perfect ending of our city trip in edinburgh
Great view with expensive hors d'oeuvres
The location and views are is amazing. But the chef obviously went to the school that defines good food as dots on a plate. I left as hungry as when we arrived. This wasn't a tasting menu, just a fixed menu with courses the size of hors d'oeuvres. The quality of the food just didn't justify the outrageous price and pretentiously small portion sizes. Apart from the bit of venison, which had a wonderful sauce, the flavors were not so interesting or diverse to warrant being called a tasting. The bar menu is also extremely limited. They only had two cocktails on the menu, including an oversweet negroni. They didn't have an actual bar so didn't have equipment to make other drinks. The waitstaff seemed to just look at us for a while after we arrived, without offering a menu or a drink. They did try and were very nice, but they seem untrained. It's an odd setup with rickety tables and chairs. Worth trying once for the view but it's kind of a con. With talent and investment, it could be an amazing restaurant.
Super visit in a unique location
Loved our visit on a sunny Sunday. The service was second to none and good very tasty. We had the set menu with wine pairing and throughly enjoyed. While the first half of the menu wasn’t to my personal liking I could still appreciate the quality and my partner thoroughly enjoyed. The service was wonderful and very accommodating to a coeliac. While the menu is pricey I am happy to accept that as paying for the view and customer service. Would go back for a special occasion.
Bit disappointing
It was a bit disappointing not what I’d expected The staff were all lovely and helpful We had the special lunch 2 courses for £24.00 t the deer terrine was really nice I didn’t really enjoy the potato bake although my friend did most of mines was like mash potato in gravy with some ,leeks and some mushrooms on top, my friends desert was really nice, we’re glad we went but wouldn’t go again
Mostly worth booking
First visit in poor weather but hey ho still a fantastic Edinburgh view point. Our excellent corner window table for 3 was well served by staff. Grillo wine £41 very pleasant. I had for warned that our guest was not a meat eater but they had not prepared for that and served a very poor veg main course to her. Our Pork was delish but crackling hard to cut as allways. Desserts (@£5)were extremely poor and need far more prep.
Beautiful restaurant
Amazingly beautiful restaurant with an awesome open kitchen. Have been here for both lunch and dinner and can say it dose not disappoint. Lunch is amazing (3 courses for £29!!!) and Ben has always killed it with his wine recommendations. Dinner was just as amazing and even more romantic with the city lights lighting up the room. Definitely stop by if you’re in Edinburgh and fancy a nice meal and a view.
Overpriced and low quality cooking
I'd been here years ago and it was stunning. Food, service and location. This visit was disappointing. The staff are pleasant and attentive. The drinks, we tried their cocktails, were lovely. The food was not great. Veloute was ok, mains, were not great and dessert was lacking in imagination. I had the game main, it was under seasoned, tepid and chewy. Dessert was ok but nothing remarkable, definitely not fine dining calibre. I'd suggest they think about repeat diners, as if they want this, then they need to increase the quality of their food. It was under seasoned, lacking in skilled cookery, bland and unimaginative. The location alone is not enough to forgive the low standard of food. Few other points. No espresso machine, french press only. Closes at 10, so bear that in mind. I wanted to love this place like I did a few years back but sorry, it's so disappointing. I wish I'd gone elsewhere and not forked out over £250 on this mediocre dining experience. Owners, please take this as constructive - this can be improved but I won't be back.
Overrated
Overall the food was nice, service was good and alll staff were friendly Though the experience was not what we expected. The restaurant seems to be aiming to be fine dining, yet its paper napkins rather than serviettes. The food was nice, but it wasn’t anything to rave about and the portions, especially the main were very small. The food wasn’t bursting with flavours as expected and we left unsatisfied. The menu had 2 options for starters and mains, just the one for dessert costing £59 per person. Doesn’t sound bad till you see the mains portion size. They automatically add a 12.5 % service charge to the bill and also asked if we wanted to add a tip. Clearly that was optional, but isn’t that what the service charge was for. I am shocked at what we paid for something I can only describe as mediocre.

Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.

When it says working on bid, it means there are people looking to fill it.
