The Old '76 House Tappan Reviews from The Last Year
Everyone's food was outstanding--every part of every meal.
We were visiting Tappan from Washington DC, where plenty of excellent restaurants are available to us, and the '76 House matched or topped all of them. We made definite plans to return to Tappan specifically for this restaurant. Its history, too, adds a fascinating element to the dining experience. Several members of our party have food allergies, and this was handled with tact and expertise, perfectly in all details. Our server, Laura, was knowledgeable, professional and personable--just wonderful. Highly recommended!

Absolutely fantastic! Food, service, drinks, entertainment, and building are stellar.
Where have you been all my life?
What a great place. The food is fantastic. Had a fabulous crispy duck and my vegetarian daughter had the moussaka. Bartender was so attentive. Happened to be jazz night-perfect
We had an early dinner during restaurant week.
We stuck with the prefix menu. I had the sirloin steak with blue cheese drizzled on top-it was fabulous. The rigatoni with bolognese sauce was the appetizer I chose-fantastic! I would definitely go back and have this as an entree! My dessert was the lemon tart-OMG another winner. My meal was so good. I definitely look forward to returning with my family. Also of note-there are a few historic sites in the neighborhood worth visiting while walking off your excellent meal! I highly recommend this restaurant.
Service was excellent.
Setting was excellent. Food was good to very good. We had a birthday dinner here with the little ones. They sat us in the big room next to the fireplace, which was nice. Our server was very nice and personable, had good history and details to tell about the restaurant. I ordered the pork chop with sweet potatoes and sauteed vegetables. It was good and thick. A little hard and dry but that's the nature of pork chops. They overcook easily. Wife has the scallops, very good and cooked perfect. Little one had the burger, which came redder than I would have preferred. Flavor was good. George Washington has a favorite beer on tap, which was like a porter and very good. It was interesting to drink something historical like that. After said and done it was not an inexpensive dinner. The location is factored in the price. If I could do this review properly it would have been 3.5 stars.
If you want history setting this is the place - and awesome
If you want history setting this is the place - and awesome brunch. Service was great and something new to try and they now have events coming up - do not pass the opportunity
A Museum with great food and drink
The experience is mostly about the history and ambiance, so I would suggest going when it's relatively empty. We went for dinner at 5;30 so we could walk around and examine the artifacts without bothering other diners. I did not have high expectations for the food so I was pleasantly surprised by the quality offerings. Another surprise was the specially brewed ale that dates from Washington's time. It was terrific. Also, while visiting, check out the small graveyard down the street with headstones dating from the Revolutionary War.
My sister and I happened upon this place awhile back.
Stopped in for a cocktail one Sunday afternoon and we're amazed. A lovely jazz singer was performing. She was incredible!!! We decided to come back for dinner this past Saturday night. I can't say enough about the Service. Our Waiter, Joe, was incredible. His knowledge about the place was fascinating....my brother in law, being a history buff, as well as my sister and I were so impressed. Joe suggested menu items to us and I have to say he was dead on.....my scallops were done to perfection...my brother in laws steak AMAZING...my sisters Crab Cake was delicious...then to our surprise..there was a Brazilian Jazz guitarist performing, who was so incredible we stayed for dessert and Cafe. Nice Crowd, wonderful Ambiance....we will certainly be back. Thanks Joe for making our night so special!!! Hope to see you again soon!!!
Thanks, Joe, for making our evening memorable! Fantastic
Thanks, Joe, for making our evening memorable! Fantastic food, attentive service! Mom and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal-
A good night all around
Arrived for a 6:30 reservation and we were seated immediately. The decor was cozy and pleasant. The waitress was friendly and attentive. It was a varied menu with some meal choices that you dont always see. Our table enjoyed the diver scallops, schnitzel and skirt steak. All in all we felt like our dinner was reasonably priced and enjoyable. We did not try dessert however we sat for quite a while after finishing our meals enjoying our cocktails and we were not rushed. We noted the live music happening in the front of the restaurant when we were leaving and all of us spoke about how it would be nice to come back for it next time. We will be back.
Great meal!
Fabulous dinner from the signature cocktails to the last course. Have the Caesar salad made table side! Services and atmosphere also great.
Food has gone down hill
We have always loved the 76 House. Today not so much. We came for the Sunday brunch which we have had many times. This time the place was very noisy. Noisier than usual. I have to say our waiter was wonderful, quick and attentive. The food was sub par. My daughter and myself each ordered the chicken and waffles. It came with bacon which was very good. The waffle was very thin and the chicken was thin and greasy. I think they are cutting costs and it shows. The orange juice and the soda that my husband and daughter had tasted watered down. It was a shame since we spent over $100 on brunch for 3. I do want to add how much I love the beauty of the 76 house I just wish they would focus more on the food more.
Wonderful all the way around, great music and dinner.
The building is well kept and the service is stellar..
Had dinner here tonight.
Excellent. Joe our waiter was very attentive and a pleasure. The pork chop was fantastic and the atmosphere makes this a special place to dine.
Excellent atmosphere.
..visiting was such a pleasure, we walked around the town and saw the history stories about President George Washington during his stay in the Midhudson region. There's a lot to see and enjoy at the 76 House in Tappan
For the History Buff
Big history buff so this was fun, although kinda disappointed this is not the original building which burned soon after the Civil War. Food good, but not great. Great menu, service, and ambience, but pricey: $77.68 for lunch for 2 before tip.
Highlight of Tour
Fabulous restaurant! I brought a bus tour group here and we had a wonderful time. The historic building is a big plus and the food was outstanding. Everyone in the tour group raved about it. The owner came out and gave us a great talk about the history of the 76 House, which was another big plus. All in all, this was one of the tour highlights.
A step back in time
My wife and i had been touring the oldest bars in north america and the old 76 came up. We stopped by and went in. Turns out it wasn’t even open for the day but the owner welcomed us in. He told us stories of his family which was the story of the founding of america. We had drinks and excellent food. This is what it must have been like for travellers 300 years ago. Stop by any time. And try the apple crumble. It was excellent. As for the building. The exterior is as authentic as the interior. Even with updates, it’s still a step back in time. Way back.

I have a reservation for Kasama Chicago I listed but it’s not showing up because the listed opening hours are only until 3 or 4 pm. My reservation is for their dinner service at 5. Is there a way I can change the times myself?
