Fabulous Stay
This was our first trip to Sidmouth, but definitely will not be the last; And if we do come back will stay at the Salty Monk once again. As we bought our fur baby with us, we stayed in one of the dog friendly rooms, which was extremely thought out for both needs!! Freshly cooked breakfast, room was clean with a high level to detail. Thank you we really enjoyed our stay :o)
Be the first to ReplyComfortable, friendly, Great Food!
Stayed in Heather room with our dog. Clean and comfortable. Breakfasts delicious and very generously portioned. Evening meal very refined and equally tasty! Nice area, ideal for exploring south Devon and pleasantly quiet despite being on a road that could be busy at times. Really enjoyed our stay and the engaging conversations we had with the owners. Would definitely recommend a stay here.
Be the first to ReplyTop dollar B&B albeit at a top dollar price !
Iris room - everything excellent - extreme comfort + service. We only had the breakfasts - but all top notch. No hesitation in recommending to anyone where budget not an issue ! Transport from central Sidmouth to the hotel - late at night - not very reliable !
Be the first to ReplyLovely place to stay
We stayed in the Wisteria room with our dog . Room was lovely and opened onto the beautiful garden - perfect for dog owners and non dog owners alike. Very comfortable bed, delicious breakfast and greeted by cookies and flapjacks in our room. Small thing, but making a big difference, was the fresh milk to have with coffee/tea in our room rather than those little cartons of milk and which are both disgusting and a waste of resources. Would definitely recommend.
Be the first to ReplyGreat dining experience
Viisted the Salty Monk with friends for an evening meal. The whole experience was very good. We initially sat in the courtyard for pre dinner drinks, where we perused the menu and the waiter took our orders. We were shown inside to our table and the stater courses followed on shortly. They consisted of an Amuse, and tapas style starters to share. Mains and desserts followed in due course, service was excellent and all of the food was superb. Highly recommended
Be the first to ReplyStress busting!
We stayed in the Heather Junior suite. The 'Tempur-matressed' K-S bed which was sublime in its comfort - we slept so well. This room is probably the furthest from the road so any passing traffic was unnoticed - except for those with sirens which the owners' two Spinoli dogs howled along with the siren, this made us smile For dog lovers like us the little brown nose poking through the fence in our private courtyard was great fun. Lots of nice thoughtful extras in the room which were every bit as classy as the materials used to furnish the room and bath room. We had a problem with the bathroom door having dropped slightly making it difficult to close but the owners were unaware and keen to put the problem right straight away. The huge Panasonic TV can be easily viewed from the comfortable arm chairs and when laid in bed some 20 feet away! We found the pre-ordering of breakfast not as easy as it should have been - make sure you tick everything what you want right down to tea/coffee and the milk for your cereals! We chose to experience the evening 4 course dinner on our final evening, it was quiet in the restaurant with only a couple of guests and no music but the 'garcon' (the owner's son) made up with his banter and tuneful ditties when making his way back to the kitchen! The food really was fine dining, the owner/chef had created such tasteful food squeezing every ounce of flavour from all the ingredients, not even phased by my wife asking for fries with her main course. This Italian Prosecco was very smooth yet lively and recommended! The gardens are beautiful and skilfully landscaped from the wood sculpture of the 'Salty Monk' hidden away in a hedge to the shipwrecked rowing boat next to the natural bond and marshy border. The Salty Monk is marketed as a boutique B&B and it lived up to this moniker. Highly recommended, especially for dog lovers/owners.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic restaurant and rooms
Just got back from a 3 night stay at the Salty Monk. The room was lovely with no issues at all- only a shame there werenโt more guests for Annette and Andy who were great hosts. Breakfast was always top class and we enjoyed 3 fantastic evening meals in the restaurant. Adamโs service was first class and really attentive. The menu was different every night- amuse, small plates, main courses and desserts were without fault every night and the wines recommended were lovely. All in all a great stay.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food great service, very dog friendly

Be the first to ReplyA GREAT TIME TO EAT AT THE SALTY MONK
After waiting so long to be able to revisit the salty monk for a great night out.
Very warm welcome. Great drinks. And an amazing tasty.
Now is the time to book and enjoy some of the best food. Great drinks combined with excellent service made the evening.
Accommodation is available here as well.
A great restaurant with rooms
We stayed here as a part of a Devon exploratory holiday and were very satisfied with our experience. Our room was cosy and comfy but a little damp perhaps as downstairs; our dinner and breakfast were delicious on both days/evenings and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. We cycled from here for the day and swam at Sidmouth which was in glorious sunshine despite it being late September. We recommend...
Be the first to ReplyFantastic meal, great staff and lovely ambience
We visited the Salty Monk on 28 September. We opted for the tasting menu and wine flight and wow did we make the right decision. Each course was beautifully presented and both the food and wine explained and more importantly tasted incredible. We canโt recommend this restaurant highly enough - we will be back and will probably stay as there are rooms there as well. Thank you to all the team.
Be the first to ReplyAugust weekend in Sidmouth
We had a great stay, hosts were very accomodating and always willing to meet our requests. Room was tidy and well equipped with huge TV and a Spar bath. Lovely well kept gardens and ample parking. Breakfast ws high quality and well presented with a nice choice including Soda bread. The location was great for us to head out east to Lym Regis or west to Exmouth. We managed to visit all the main spots in between.
Finding a table to eat out at was a problem with so many people doing stay-cations and most places short of staff, so do plan ahead and book up.
We would higly recomend a takeaway from a provate residence 6min walk away - its called The Shawarma Stop, you wont find anything tastier on the planet!
Ruined 60th birthday weeked
We booked two nights in 2020 but were unable to attend due to Covid, we said to keep the deposit and would rebook. On the 13th May this year I phoned to make a reservation for 13th August for two nights, this was all agreed and an email confirmation was received after the phone call. A week before the stay an email reminding us of the stay was received. On arrival on the 13th we entered the hotel and was greeted by a woman at reception, we said that we had a booking for the two nights, when she brought up the booking screen on the computer I could see that there were 3 arrivals that day and our name was on the list. After some checking she said there was a problem and the computer had put us in a non-existent holding room, when asked what that meant she said that they did not have a room for us and that they were fully booked, all the time blaming the computer. The woman (I believe to be the owner) said she would book us in to another hotel a few miles away, we refused this as that was not where we wanted to be and my wife was now visibly upset, a quiet village setting swapped for a busy seaside town in the summer holidays. The email confirmations were shown to her but she said it was the 'computer' that sent them out, we then asked for our deposit back and then left. On the the next Monday we received a bunch of flowers but this in no way makes up for a ruined 60th birthday weekend away. We have stayed here on 3 or 4 occasions with no problems but this was disgraceful.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful tasting menu to start our Honeymoon
Having got married yesterday we wanted to start our first night on our honeymoon with a tasting menu and stumbled upon the Salty Monk online. We were so well looked after tonight, thank you to the staff for being so welcoming. The 7 course tasting menu was beautiful, our favourite course was the beef fillet, it was absolutely sensational! Weโve had a wonderful night. Highly recommend!

We all really enjoyed our stay in the Salty Monk. A very friendly welcome, comfortable rooms with attractive decor and an excellent breakfast cooked to order. We also ate in the restaurant in the evening which was excellent. The location is exceptionally dog friendly with an extensive park which leads into the centre of Sidmouth. Dogs are welcomed in some of the rooms and part of the restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyLived up to its reputation
This is a small but stylish restaurant deserving of all its plaudits. The food and flavours were delicious, I particularly enjoyed the fillet of salmon with a Thai curry twist and coconut lentils. It was cooked to perfection as was the praline creme brรปlรฉe. The wine and cocktail list was extensive and interesting. Service good and with a smile!
