The Talbot Inn Frome Reviews from The Last Year
Aces
Fabulous service and a delicious, prompt meal. Looked after my family (little one, included) really well and the food was really tasty. Great to have colouring in to do, wine was lush and the food was presented brilliantly but also so full of flavour.
A bit non-plussed
Went for a beer and some grub at lunchtime. Beer served, took some menus - jeez HOW MUCH - jaws hit floor! (£4.50 for "nibbles", £8.50 for a soup). OK needs must, we ordered after recovered senses. All the plates platters delivered are not even close to justifying pricing, are all pubs trying to out price each other? The top meat and pudding together would set you back £88!! As it was, fairly standard fair arrived, burger poorly dressed, no relish, soggy chips, a reasonable fish but same chips, and a ploughmans that failed to fill a habitually small stomach. Nothing special about the bread, and a scraping of butter (you wouldn't get a half acre ploughed on that). Thankfully the beer filled the space. Madame says she's been more full on a bag of crisps. Puddings were mentioned, and a joke was made about nipping to village shop. I know that of late, the cognescenti of a local "private members club" have deigned to cross the threshold splashing the cash, but don't believe their publicity. It was great as a boozer, is still good for a drink but pack a very full wallet, and a not so empty stomach.
Smashing place!!!!
Was part of a wedding reception, and had a meal in the " hall" To say the least....a fantastic place, the food was superb, the staff were excellent....an altogether wonderful afternoon. Lovely old place, charming and very atmospheric!...
A really friendly place
A really friendly place, they even gave us a personalised menu - saying congratulations on your 20th wedding anniversary - how sweet is that. the food was good and the service friendly and personable. Hopefully will get to go back soon :)
Xmas party
We were invited as staff members to our annual Xmas meal at the talbot, same venue every year. French onion soup, was a starter choice, from a cullenery point of view it was terrible, the chef needs to go back to college to at least get some training, mains were the same quality, disaster for the talbot, not as good as you think you are!! 😬
The apotheosis of the English coaching inn!
We arrived on a dark rainy November afternoon and were immediately conducted to our room which though niot enormous had a very comfortable bed. Fresh milk was provided for a restorative cup of tea, which I followed with a wallow in the bathtub (an array of first rate shampoos and bubble baths is provided). Thence to the wonderfully welcoming bar, which features local gin (one navy strength!) excellent real ales, including one brewed for the Beckford Group. Real ale can be hit and miss and is often underwhelming but here is is well kept and delicious and it is dispensed with real pleasure by the friendly and knowledgeable staff - the quality of service really is outstanding. The cosy candle-lit restaurant features an array of (carefully chosen) second hand furniture. The wooden floor is covered with old carpets and prints hang on the walls. One room has a large fireplace and this time of year there is a crackling fire which adds to the feeling of wellbeing - if I had to define the word German word 'Gemütlichkeit' I'd use this establishment as an example. Dinner was excellent - a pork terrine was particularly memorable. The wine list is good and prices are fair - we drank a very good Côtes du Rhône for around £40 but you can pay more or less. After an excellent night's sleep we opted for the Talbot full English - the ingredients for a Blood Mary were on offer, but we resisted the temptation. Discretion and all that. I cannot recommend this place too highly. The staff are friendly and attentive, food, wine and beer are first rate and it is so so cosy. We will return - as they say in the Michelin Guide 'vaut le détour'! Oh yes, there are some good walks locally and the church is a worth a visit. Bath is about half an hour's drive.
Wow, what a place
We have just returned from a weekend away here, and we were blown away by everything, from the room, to the staff to the food. The staff are amazing, they can not do enough for you. The room was very comfortable, with a very nice roll top bath that my wife loved. Dinner on both nights was amazing, lots of choice, with everything cooked and presented to perfection. We will definitely look to return on our next visit to the area.
Delicious, comfort food outstanding service
Fabulous food, wonderful service and cosy atmosphere. We loved the Talbot and we're so impressed with everything here. We would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal, it was one of the best this year.
Brilliant Pub!
Lovely atmosphere, outstanding service! very very busy! Great to see live music there, fingers crossed it happens again! outside bar worked wonders saved me queuing in the main bar. Got chatting to who I can only assume was the manager, Sam. Definitely knows how to organise an event. His staff member Maeve who was also helping on the outside bar as well as, as she put it “behind the scenes” done a brilliant job, very efficient. Will definitely be back. Nick
Fantastic day out
We stayed all day in Mells and had both lunch and supper at the Talbot Inn. Both were first class, as was the afternoon tea in the sunny courtyard. Staff - young and enthusiastic- were friendly, attentive and helpful. Wine and Talbot beer excellent. The whole plaice was a triumph.
