Super friendly, very local
I’ve never had Tonkatsu. I researched this place as a local lunch spot and went with friends. The staff were very helpful with the small menu to help us order as we were unfamiliar with tonkatsu. They told us what to order, what sauce to use with what dish, etc. It was a fantastic experience. We came early for lunch at 1115. When we we left there was a line of people waiting outside for a table! Great spot.

This was such an awesome meal but on top of that it is a very unique experience. The pork was so delicious and tender. The pickles, cabbage, rice and everything was the best.

Great food that is akin to enjoying great TONKATSU in Japan itself. Service is gracious, food is super delicious and the seating is comfortable. Getting a reservation is a pain but if you can score one, definitely visit.
Be the first to ReplyBest Tonkatsu in Hawaii!
Our friends invited us to dinner at Tonkatsu Tamafuji because we are all Japanophiles who love Japanese food. I must say that Tamafuji did not disappoint! Their tonkatsu dishes were the next best thing to actually having Tonkatsu in Japan! Service was fast and courteous, and they adhered to all Covid screening requirements. You will need to make a reservation in advance, and pick one of two daily dinner seating times. It gets crowded quickly as this place is very popular! We are already planning our next visit! Enjoy!

OMG. Just got back from eating lunch @ Tonkastu Tamafuji. We are so full and had a great experience. There was so much food. Better come hungry. Husb and i ordered the oysters and couldn't finish.
First you MUST make a RESERVATION or stand by in the event of no shows, which is unlikely since you are given every chance to confirm or cancel reservations as the day approaches. This restaurant is on the second floor of the old Hee Hing building and parking was $1 for our stay. Lloyd the parking attendant advises if arriving after 5pm, park only if you have reservations, otherwise, $2 fee is non refundable!
Two separate copper vats to fry either seafood or meats, but not both, so helpful since my husband doesn't eat land animals.
Shin, our waiter, was attentive, pleasant, courteous, and encouraged us to request more tsukemono/rice if we needed. What a place! We felt like we were transported to Japan for that short hour experience.
We were given a bowl/pestle to grind our sesame seeds, then add the original or sweet tonkatsu sauce as you like. Tsukemono and miso soup were delicious. I ordered mine with clams and husband ordered his red miso. My favorite was the multi=grain rice, finely shredded cabbage, and salad dressings. Our oysters were big and flavorful w/delicate lacy panko.
The cooks are skilled; table staff: very professional! See attached on how to order your meal. Just a nice way to spend our Saturday!
Next best thing to Tokyo
Eating at Tonkatsu Tamafuji is an adventure. First, book well in advance. Secondly, what appears to be total chaos outside the door sorts itself out, and it becomes apparent there are two lines, one for take-out and another for dine-in. If you are dining in, check in at the desk. We had an 8pm reservation, and you have to wait for the entire earlier seating to leave before you are admitted. Once seated, you are treated to tonkatsu-lovers heaven. Juicy, delicious pork cutlets with traditional accompaniments. Very authentic, and be prepared to smell like grease until you take a shower.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Tonkatsu meal!!!
We were lucky to get to try this restaurant as it is fully booked for this August month. The inside decoration is nice and the food is well presented. The tonkatsu (pork cutlet) was so juicy and tender. The all you can eat rice and cabbage salad are another plus! !!!
Overall it is a great experience and delicious food.
Highly recommended to book it way ahead of time as this restaurant is always super busy.
Best tonkatsu in the area
Tonkatsu Tamafuji is amazing. The pork meat is juicy. The breading is perfectly fried and crispy. Even the shrimp and oyster katsu are delicious. The seasoned rice and red miso are like a cherry on top.
Delicious Katsu You Cannot Miss
A trip to Oahu is not complete without getting my fix of authentic katsu (crispy breaded fried cutlet of meat) and this is the perfect spot for it. Reservations are required to dine here during the pandemic and they seat everyone in waves. We were able to snag a table at the 6:45pm seating and I have to commend them for such a flawless process. When we left the restaurant, tables were being cleared and prepped for the next batch of diners who were waiting in line outside to get seated.
Service was exceptional with a staff so attentive and efficient. With the help of our server, we were very happy with what we ordered that evening. A Big Jyukusei Loin is a generous portion of pork katsu that can feed 2 people. It comes with your choice of red or regular miso soup, unlimited refill of cabbage salad, and a bowl of white rice. Go for the red miso soup if you want a bolder and robust flavor. The pork was juicy with a golden crisp coating on the outside. There are 2 kinds of sauce on the table which you can't eat the katsu without. I enjoyed both sauces equally and the fun part was grinding the sesame seeds prior to mixing the sauce in - this you do at the beginning. Another dish worthy of getting is their Cheese Chicken Katsu which has melted cheese lathered on top of the beautifully fried morsels of poultry. Again, uber tender and simply mouthwatering. Cheese lovers, don't miss out on this. You'll also get soup, salad, and rice with this order.
Easily one of my favorite meals on this trip.
TakeOut nightmate
This review is based on the takeout food I had. Early in our trip, we got takeout from Ginza, and it was delicious, so I know Katsu in Hawaii can be successful when ordered to go.
Heard great things about Tamafuji, and was super excited to order. The phone was busy for an hour, so they are super popular. Ended up driving down and placing an order in person so we could try. They said pickup in 45 minutes. Was back in 43. Grabbed the food and was unpacking the food back at the hotel in 8 minutes.
Packaging was beautiful. Great looking paper box around the bento container.
Rice was excellent. Pickles were ok. Umeboshi was not so good.
Now for the worst part. The Katsu itself. Picked up first piece, oil was dripping off of it. Then the Panko and batter fell apart. Was a soggy oil laden mess. ate half and had to throw the rest away. Stomach hurt for a day after.
I think the pretty box may have been the downfall as no air holes or ventilation to let the steam out after frying. And the Katsu wasn’t raised so it just sat in oil.
Would not recommend this place for takeout at all. Based on how much oil was in the katsu, would not really recommend period.
The best tonkatsu in the world!
Probably the best tonkatsu in the world!
This is our go to spot every time we come to Waikiki. If you love shrimp they got the best shrimp tempura!
Great
Food and service great; however, I would prefer rice bran oil versus canola oil for tonkatsu deep frying. The sauces were tasty as well as presentation.
Be the first to ReplyDon’t listen to the haters who thinks all restaurants should be McDonald’s!
the food is great! You have not eaten a proper tonkasu unless you have eaten at Tamafuji. Some dude from Las Vegas gives a one star because he waited for 2 hours to get seated! Someone is feeling special! Stop your whining! It’s not a McDonald’s!
