Trattoria Sostanza Firenze Reviews
A total delight
My favourite restaurant in Florence, beloved by tourists and locals alike. The staff are warm, the prices are reasonable, and the food is excellent. I particularly love the gnocchi gorgonzola dusted with finely chopped arugula. The meat is very good too.
I'm sorry I can only give this place a 5.
It deserves a 10. it is a simple place. Modest decoration. it has limited seating. so you MUST reserve. they basically have two seatings. 7:30 and 9. And you will be served and done quickly. the prices are ridiculous (low) and I hope they don't read this and raise the prices. the food is fresh and delicious. ham and the sweetest melon ever. I could have eaten the tomatoes all night long. and the chicken in butter is the specialty. ORDER IT. the chicken is so flavorful and tender. the charm is also in the ONE dessert selection for the night. but get it. they are hard workers. two brothers (mention Sardinia...they close all of August to go) and the front manager from Bologna. they could not be any more pleasant even though they are VERY busy serving and cleaning tables at the same time. you will NOT be screwed here. It is the BEST place in Florence!
8 years later and still the same - but then surely thatโs the appeal
We last visited Sostanza about 8 years ago, might be a little longer, so when we decided to rent a villa outside Firenze we knew where to go for dinner. We loved its authenticity and the traditional food last time, and impressed to report it was exactly the same last night. One of the few place where you really feel it hasnโt changed in decades; the ambiance, the food, maybe the waiters. They do a few things exceptionally well. Clean, precise and true to its roots. I would eat here every week if I could.
Amazing restaurant!
OMG if you are in Florence, you have to come to Trattoria Sostanza for dinner - the food and service are absolutely amazing and you see a lot of locals also dining there as well and I can see why! The restaurant opens and immediately there is a line that forms outside. You have to have a reservation or you are not getting a table as the restaurant is very small. There are two seating times for dinners, one at 7 and one at 9:30 PM, nothing else. And you are seated in large family size tables, so you will most likely be sharing the table with someone else or a couple of parties. The servers are all so friendly and offer to answer any questions you may have about the menu. We ordered a bottle of wine to start with a good selection all at good prices. We started with the Tuscan crostini (each for 4 Euros), and then got the pasta with meat sauce (12 Euros), Tortellini in Chicken broth (13 Euros) and the butter chicken to share (23 Euros). All food is very simple, but OMG the quality is amazing and everything was fresh and flavorful. For dessert we got the dessert (meringue with strawberries) for 11 Euros which is a must get as well. If you're in Florence, definitely stop in, you'll be glad you did!

Food is delicious! What everyone says about the butter
Food is delicious! What everyone says about the butter chicken is absolutely correct: it is the best chicken you will ever taste. We also tried the artichoke pie which is yummy and the florentine steak served very rare is melt in your mouth good. Need to get here early to get a table or we went 2 hours before opening to get a reservation. Worth it while in Florence!! Located on a tiny alley away from all the tourists.
Rude owner and waiter
We had a confirmed reservation from their employee by email. Unfortunately it wasnโt in the book which looked like a 1st grader wrote in it. That aside the rudeness and loud voices telling us to leave were embarrassing. We did end up eating there because there was an empty table(imagine that). The food was good but not great. We will never go back.
great meal
Overall great experience. Food was great - order the chicken! not everyone likes the communal table. a couple seated with us, were very uncomfortable with sharing. So this is not for everyone.
Tourist joint, tourist prices and disinterested owner
Travaking 15000km to Italy to revisit this trattoria with my family. I called 2 times to book 3 weeks in advance. We showed up on time but they didn't have our reservation (they have an old book in which they write down names...). Owner could not care less: "may we made a mistake, maybe you make a mistake", the returned to cut his salami for his customers. He didn't try to help in any way, set up another table or anything (when there was a spare table used solely to store some kitchen stuff apparently). He just let us stand for 8 long minutes, totally ignoring us while still doing his things. I have never seen such an owner so disinterested in customers... It really contrast with all the experiences I had over the years in Italy. Point to be noted, 10 years ago, the place was vibrant with waiters chatting with customers, tables being shared and food that looked good. This time I noticed that the waiters were just doing their job, not engaging with customers. Also the ambiance was dull and I didn't see any Italians eating there (only english was spoken). In short, if you want to give your money to someone who doesn't care about his customers and expose yourself to a tourist joint at tourist price points, go ahead. If you want good food, lively ambiance and soak up what Tuscany is about, spend your money anywhere else in town.
A local diamond of a restaurant.
Wow ! This small family run restaurant down a small side street is a wonder. From the outside it looks like a small cafe, inside it is a mix of styles, small, intimate and not indicative of what is to come. Locals know about this place, you HAVE to book. The waiting staff give you a hand written menu, and quickly arrange a drink and some bread. We had been recommended to have the artichoke pie, which is more of an omelette, and the butter chicken, so we did. Incredible. - the artichoke is so soft and creamy and the chicken tender, having been cooked in butter. A side of green beans and a salad made two incredibly simple dishes outstanding. How they produce such great food in such a small kitchen is beyond me. You sometime have to share a table if you are just a two - but do. Everyone is there to enjoy the food so book it and go!

I made it a goal to avoid tomatoes on this brief trip to Firenze. There is no shortage of quality options for authentic Neapolitan pizzas and pastas in NY, but a distinct lack of the delectable rustic bean and vegetable dishes that for many years were synonymous with la cucina povera. So of course I had to try the famous tortino de carciofi at Sostanza, on a small alley pleasantly devoid of most tourists. The unique dish is akin to an omelette with fried artichokes, but with a bit of puffiness that resembles a quiche. The dish has a generous amount of oil, but the flavor of the artichokes gives the dish its real richness.
A little difficult to find, but worth the effort.
There are only six tables and three seatings per day. Make the effort to get a reservation! We were lucky enough to talk to the owner in person and obtain a reservation for two, for later in the evening. Persistence paid off! This was the best meal we ate in all of Italy. Small, nothing fancy, but truly authentic old school cooking. The staff were awesome! Like other reviews state, BUTTER CHICKEN!

This is the best meal I had while in Florence! Simple but absolutely delicious! I had heard of butter chicken but had no idea how delicious it was. The staff were wonderful and extremely helpful. Highly recommend every try butter chicken!
Food n service was amazing! The best burnt butter chicken
Food n service was amazing! The best burnt butter chicken I've ever tasted. Artichoke dish was also very good.
Do not miss the Butter chicken and steak in this place if
Do not miss the Butter chicken and steak in this place if you are visiting Florence. Make sure to have a reservation a while in advance because this gem of a restaurant is not the secret it was once. Seriously. This is the best chicken my wife and I have ever had and positively the best piece of steak. Both are unassuming and seemingly simple but are exquisite. The chicken is an old family recipe and not to be missed. Service is honest and friendly. Decor is unpretentious with photos on the wall that remind you that this place has been around for a mighty long time. You could easily miss this gem of a restaurant if you didn't know it was there. As far as our family is concerned, no trip to Florence is complete without a stop at Michelangelo's David, the Uffizi Gallery and most importantly Trattoria Sostanza. Seriously.
Two seatings a night, don't try and get in early, they open
Two seatings a night, don't try and get in early, they open the door at 7:30 for the 7:30 seating. Everyone orders the same main dish, butter chicken and one dish is enough for two people. It's the star of the show. Maybe get some spinach or beans to go with it but trust me, you are here for the chicken... Five stars
Fantastic! A must visit!
The restaurant had been highly recommended by a couple of people and rightly so! It was an absolutely excellent meal! Very unassuming from the outside, reasonably traditional and unpretentious on the inside, the atmosphere built as diners arrived and the place was quickly very full. Service was great, the hand-written menu was definitely not overly fussy and the food was, quite honestly, amazing. My daughter loved her generous veal steak and I ordered the butter chicken, which was very probably the most delicious chicken dish Iโve ever eaten. Just incredible. Looking around the different tables, it was clearly very popular and I would strongly recommend. Dessert was also excellent and the overall cost was really reasonable. Amazing!
So good
Booked a table over the phone since they donโt have any booking site. When we arrived they just had finished the first seating and we had to wait for some minutes. We then had a fantastic dinner with prosciutto that melted in our mouths and bistecca and butter chicken from heaven. We rounded off with some cake and coffee. You shouldnโt miss this gem.
Friendly and good good but long wait
A friendly spot and family style. Many locals were there but the wait was 1.5 hours. Food was good and inexpensive. We had fun since we talked with the other group sharing a table. For each of us two couples it $40 per couple. This included a large bottle of wine , roast beef and pasta etc. we recommend it but be advised of the LONG line.
Soooooo Good!
This is a true Tuscan experience! The Butter Chicken is especially delicious and the Meringue Stawberry cake was equally amazing! All of our food and the house red wine was delicious but it was the experience, the service, that made it really unique and special.
Best hidden Gem!!!
Trattoria Sostanza was recommended to us by friends who ate their ten years ago. Many times they have raved how it was the most delicious and memorable meal of their trip. We had to make sure we went on our trip to Italy. We read that you have to have reservations, so make sure you do it or you might get turned away, especially during peak tourist season. The locals love to eat here too. Even though we had the address, it took us a minute to find it. It has a roll top metal door closed until 7 when they open. They do have not a lot of markings to find it except the address number, so give yourself a little extra time to find it. Once the metal door is open you will be easily able to locate it. The service is exceptional!! The menu is simple, but heavenly! We started with the ham and melon plus the house wine which was delicious! We ordered the butter chicken and the bistecca alla florentina with a side of beans and salad. By far that was the best chicken and steak we have ever had. It all came out piping hot and so flavorful. The couple next to us are living in Florence for a couple of years and frequently eat here. They canโt get enough of the butter chicken. To top it off, we ordered the merengue cake. One piece was not enough. It was amazing. You MUST eat here when you travel to Italy. You will never forget this meal!
Butter Chicken!!! Yes Please!
This restaurant was a highlight for us. We had heard about it before traveling to Italy. All the reviews raved about the butter chicken and rightfully so. Simple, delicious perfection. Also the artichoke pie. reservations are a must and the tables are community seating style (so fun). The chefs were friendly and happy that we enjoyed our meal
Fabulous food, a must tryin Florence!
Loved this small, friendly restaurant. The food was spectacular. You must eat the sizzling chicken and artichoke frittata. Our service was incredible. The setting is very intimate with lots of photos of patrons on the walls. I dream of returning on a future trip to Florence. Also check out the wine window nearby!
Came recommended by dozens of people my husband works with
Came recommended by dozens of people my husband works with in travel. They did not miss the mark! Without a doubt, the best chicken we've ever had in our lives. All future chicken will now be judged against this and fail wildly. Our server was hilarious and super friendly. All of our food was great and if we could eat there again, we would do it in a heart beat. Good to note that this is communal seating so if you're a small party, you might be seated with people you don't know. It's also very popular so make a reservation well in advance/enlist your hotel to help, if need be.
Just delicious! Butter chicken and the ice cream wild
Just delicious! Butter chicken and the ice cream wild strawberry dessert were definitely not to miss. Enjoyed every bite!
Operating without a website or PR for over 150 years
Operating without a website or PR for over 150 years Trattoria Sostanza is something of an institution, and although locals may gripe that the Restaurant has become overrun with tourists those with the prudence to book one of six tables will discover textbook Tuscan cuisine served by a pleasant staff. Not remotely fancy, the bar up front doubling as a prep-station for Dessert and cashier, it is surrounded by family photos that house Wine is poured liberally prior to the arrival of bread made fresh and replenished on request. Known for signatures including Bistecca alla Fiorentina, according to some the best in town, an antipasti of sliced Salumi compares favorably to many while Tortellini en Brodo split to share comes hazy but packed savory notes and a vegetal finish. Sporting an open kitchen, its small size comparable to Sostanza itself, both the Artichoke Omelette (labeled "Pie") and Chicken in Butter Sauce are highly-regarded for good reason while Meringue Pie with Chocolate Chips and Wild Strawberries is a textural masterpiece.
Unchanged for a hundred years. Wonderful in every respect
A very special time capsule, apparently unchanged for a hundred years. As our first class immaculately presented waiters brought us perhaps the best Italian food ever, a T-Bone on the same scale of the statue of David I was detracted by the quiet always hard working grey haired proprietor on the front counter. As we left I chatted to him, he followed his father whoโd been there for 51 years. He then added that his partner was 3rd generation founder in 1933. SO SPECIAL - unforgettable.
Butter Chicken is the Best
There is nothing more that I can say about the Butter Chicken other than do not miss it. It was fantastic. You may be seated at a table for 6 with others. At first this was a turn off, but we met nice people whose visit was their first time to Italy, and gave them recommendations from our many visits over 50 years. We even bumped into one of them in Rome at one of our favorite places.
Best evening out in Florence.
My sister recommended this restaurant to us. I suggest that whatever you do, make a reservation. It opens at 7.30pm, we were in promptly and within ten minutes it was full. Whatever you do, order the butter chicken. Perfection. I also thought that their zucchini fritti were the best I have ever had. Service is efficient and friendly. Perhaps the greatest compliment that I can pay them, apart from the fact that we had a marvellous evening, is that when we got up to leave we said good bye to three tables around us. Stunning atmosphere and cannot praise it highly enough
Lived up to the reputation
After reading all the great reviews we just had to come during our brief visit to Florence. Since they don't take reservations on line, we asked our hotel to make reservations for us. We came in at 7:30 PM and were promptly and warmly greeted. We had the steak and buttered chicken, which was to die for. It is in a small valley. Google had trouble pinpoint it and tried to send us another trattoria up the street.
Go for the chicken - seriously
Fantastic local spot. Great atmosphere (locals out to eat together who were very friendly to tourists). Saw photos of many famous previous diners About 3 different people told my wife (then fiancee) and myself to get the chicken, which on its face did not sound that interesting. It was perhaps the best chicken I've ever had. I still think about this dish years later. Wild strawberries and raspberries with lemon and sugar were also great. Considered gatekeeping this but it is too good not to share
Good food and good value
The service was first class and the menu had many good choices. Booking is essential as the restaurant is not large. The food chosen was excellent
Get Dessert!
I walked in with my husband, nervous since we didnโt have a reservation, and found out they were booked up to a week in advance! Lucky us, they had a table of three not show up, so on the spot we were fortunate enough to get seated. This is a Trattoria, please remember, so seating is minimal and the area is small, but the charm is endless and the food even better. Our server was charismatic and wonderful, helpful in speaking English with us despite our broken attempts at Italian. We were in close proximity to our table partners, but even they were lovely and social, and they even encouraged me to try the dessert (please get their cake with seasonal berries, it will highlight your week!). Our food was incredibly delicious, and while we didnโt have any wine (shame on me for drinking a bit too much the night before) I saw many enjoying it with a merry atmosphere. The food could have its own paragraph, but Iโve spent weeks here in Italy eating all over, and I was still blown away by how incredible the food was! Well worth the price, and surely the wait if you come here. I recommend a reservation, and of course showing up on time (or youโll make someone lucky like we were).
Front Desk was extremely rude given we had online
Front Desk was extremely rude given we had online reservations. He claimed that the restaurant doesn't have an email . Regardless, he eventually warmed up on us and ensured we had a table for two. I discovered later this was the owner. Servers were extremely friendly and food came out quite fast. I'm from America so the Florentine steak had something to be desired. Butter chicken was absolutely fantastic - some of the best chicken we'd ever had. It comes out in the pan sautรฉed in brown butter. Chef's kiss... Ambiance had a hole in the wall feeling but was quite the gem in Florence Italy. There are two sittings each night so be sure to call or have your hotel call for reservation.
A six table restaurant in Florence... simply fabulous
A friend recommended this six table (!) restaurant to us and we're so glad we followed up on her suggestion. Reservations clearly required... and smaller parties may share a table. The four of us had another couple at the far end of the table... far enough away that both of us had privacy but close enought o chat if we wished. The staff is very friendly, profficient in English and know just how to manage a full restaurant placing stress on their small kitchen all at once. They basically have two seating a night..7:30 and 9:00 pm... and have relatively limited menu.. a few pastas, salads and entrees so the staff can submit each course en-masse to the kitchen. We didn't know this but you can bring your own wine..their selection is Chianti. period. We had the Florentine steaks and pasta with meat sauce selections with some different slalds/apps. All were VERY good. The meringue desert is to die for!! strongly recommended by our waiter and we were so glad. Try this hidden gem.. but reserve early and consider bringing your own wine.
I am so glad a Google search of where to eat in Florence
I am so glad a Google search of where to eat in Florence led me to this fantastic little eatery. Unassuming on the outside but full of character on the inside. It's a small and very popular place, so I highly recommend making a reservation well in advance. From everything I read and saw online, I had to go and see what all the fuss is about behind the butter chicken and semifreddo with meringue, chocolate chips and raspberries...it all holds up! The chicken is juicy and flavorful--a nice change from noodles we'd been eating. The semifreddo is light, fresh, and not overly sweet. Perfect dessert after such a meal. So simple but so GOOD! Plus the staff is very warm and charming. Go here! You're welcome.
Very underwhelming- truly shocked at the 4.
6 rating. We came here because my husband was a little tired of noodles and wanted chicken. We ended up getting the butter chicken, florentine steak, green beans and mushrooms. The chicken is tender but relatively flavorless. Menu items are very straightforward with no creativity. Green beans are intentionally cold, mushrooms are plain, steak feels unseasoned. I feel like they let the cuts of meat do the talking, so if that's your thing then you might like it. I personally found myself filling up on bread and wishing I'd gone somewhere else.
Our hotel helped us book this restaurant in advance.
We were running late from our tour and asked our guide to call and let them know. We arrived 15 min late very apologetic and they were so gracious about it. The service was the best we've had in Italy though I would come back for the food itself even if they were mean! We got the chicken breast in butter and it was simply the best white meat I've ever had. I usually avoid white meat because it's bland and dry. This one was tasty and moist! For the reviewers who said it was dry, I wonder if the left it on the pan plate too long. We took it off immediately when it arrived. The tortellini and broth and meat sauce were both also good. The vegetable soup was really flavorful too, as were the mushrooms and string beans we got for sides. My least favorite was the steak- only because we had a better one the other night and because the chicken was so good. With all that aside, the steak is quite good. As I went to pay, I saw a slice of meringue cake on the counter and of course I sat back down and ordered one. It was wonderful and I usually don't care for meringue. The meal was the best we've had in Italy so far overall. We tried to make reservations again for tomorrow night but sadly they're not open. Definitely highly recommend and will come again if I'm ever in Florence.
You just can't get more authentic atmosphere, better
You just can't get more authentic atmosphere, better service (they treat you like you are part of their family), or more delicious chicken in the pan anywhere else. We absolutely love Sostanza and make it a point to dine here every time we are in Florence.
Great food service and wine
Great food and service at great prices. We were made to feel at home with some of the best food (Florentine steak, butter chicken, spinach and even the mixed salad) were excellent. The wine list is the best priced and fantastic.
The best!
Oh my goodness. One of the best at great prices. Love the smaller restaurant feel. The waitersโฆ.amazing. Alessandro was SO welcoming. The steak was so tasty and bigger than youโd see in the USA unless you paid handsomely for it. If you can get a reservation, take it! Even our local tour guide today knew how wonderful and authentic this restaurant is.
Our pilgrimage restaurant in Firenze.
You need reservations now, and call early. The dinning room is bare bones trattoria, but the food is marvelous. Petti do pollo in burro, tripe, and bistro a are some of our favorites. I am going back in zapril. Can't wait!
Lunch
We were recommended this restaurant by endless trip advisor reviews so made a reservation. I know Florence well and lived here for a while. It was hugely disappointing. We had a tasteless lunch and literally could not understand the hype. We could have had a much better lunch if weโd cooked it in our air b and b. There are So so many better places to go. It prides itself on being honest Tuscan cooking, but it is basic.
To add to your to do list in Florence
Excellent Restaurant (small) . Historic plates very well made . Try the artichoke Tortina and the Buttered Chicken . Meat of course is excellent . Very good service . Massimiliano the owner is very pleasant and available to tell you the restaurant history that starts in the 1860. Highly recommended for the food and the service.
Charming, rustic and authentic trattoria with delicious food.
We situated ourselves at the back right corner and had a fantastic view of the kitchen and the chefs at work, with the theatrics of ginormous, Florentine steaks being flame grilled and chicken sizzling in abundant butter. The food did not disappoint and we enjoyed delicious tortellini in brodo, the chicken in butter and the meringue with berries. You could clearly taste that the chefs use Hugh quality ingredients. We enjoyed the warm, friendly and accommodating service and the cosy atmosphere. Wonderful, memorable experience.
Authentic!
Very unprepossessing from the outside but a very warm welcome, a traditional, cosy interior, friendly and efficient service, and a tiny kitchen producing delicious, largely meat based dishes.
One of our favorites.
Most recent visit, we got the Parma ham (definitely the right choice over the Tuscan salami), Tuscan crostini (good but I'd probably skip next time), pasta with meat sauce, pasta with butter sauce (for our kids), tortellini in chicken broth, steak, butter chicken, white beans with olive oil, and the meringue cake. I think this is still my favorite steak in Florence. I also think they have the best bread of all the places we go to regularly, and the cake is among the best desserts. The pastas are great but not top tier for me.With so many amazing restaurants in this city, it's hard for me to absolutely 100% commit to coming here every time, but it always makes for a really amazing dinner.
Best butter chicken around! Delicious strawberry meringue
Best butter chicken around! Delicious strawberry meringue cake to finish. Only way to get a reservation is to call, they rarely have space for walk-ins.
Yummmm.
Was recommended this place from a random person we met and told specifically to eat the buttered chicken and artichoke pie - so we did! We were really lucky. We arrived at the restaurant about ten minutes after the opened at 7:40 pm. It was a Saturday night and the place was already packed - the lovely man at the front managed to squeeze us in at two seats he had open at a table. So, make a reservation if you're more than one or two people!! Chicken was 5/5 stars, maybe even 6/5. Artichoke pie was unlike anything I've had before - think more eggs less pie, but was also delicious. Highly recommend if you're in Florence!
