The Curse of the single diner strikes againI was in the mood to try this restaurant out as I've been eyeing it for a while. Unfortunately it didn't meet my expectations. I arrived later in the evening so all seats were taken. That's fine, I was expecting to have to wait. Maybe they were wanting to move people along as they offered me the option to sit in their sister restaurant next door (can't recall the name). Once in, most of the tables were full but I was guided to the high bench facing the rest of Emporium or another lower table (still with stools) next to the entrance or further back in the restaurant. I mentioned to the server that I had a bad back and that as the stools at the higher bench had a slight back I'd try them. When I climbed up on the stool I found that the bench was at around the height of my armpits. Just a tad higher than anticipated. I thought I'd see if I could be moved to one of the lower tables with stools (I wouldn't be surprised if it's a policy that single diners aren't seated at tables with proper chairs. It's something I come across way too frequently so the best I was hoping for was a table top closer to a usual level)I decided to order the Fisherman's basket to trial a variety of their offerings. I wasn't particularly surprised to be told they couldn't move me (despite the aforementioned alternative tables still remains vacant). My meal was not exactly quick to arrive. In fact the orders of the table of seven (?) behind me arrived before mine did. The fisherman's basket was served in three tiers. Hot food on the top, roll and canapรฉs in the middle and prawns and oysters on ice on the bottomAs I didn't want my food to get cold I started at the top, lifting the plate off the stand as it was too high to comfortably eat off when on the high bench. Turns out I needn't have worried as the fish and chips were already tepid which sucked any appreciation I had for their preparation to the dregs Onto the prawns and oysters then. I lifted the plate off only to be splashed with ice cold water. The ice had melted (of course it had!) This water also spilt on the bench which meant that after a couple of minutes I had to contend with a constant drip of water onto my legs. I strongly suspect that my meal was made and then just left in the kitchen to cool/melt while others were served. Or that they plain forgot about me and where I was seated. To top it off, sitting on a stool and reaching up to eat caused my back to start to seize so I couldn't even finish my meal. When I departed the lower tables were still vacant. I don't foresee any circumstances that will get me to return here. I may be a solo diner and as such not as profitable as a larger group but not bringing food to the table when it's ready is poor service in my mind

Lobster pasta is amazing, the sauce is rich and flavourful, presentation is really great, they put half a lobster on top, with rocket salad as well. For drinks we ordered iced green tea with soft serve, the tea soft serve is pretty awesome never had anything like this.
Be the first to ReplyWell it was an interesting dinner.
The people were nice enough but the service could only be described as slow, chaotic and frenetic. I actually felt ย sorry for the people working there. They give you the menu for the gyoza joint next door along with their menu and a drink menu. It would take a few hours to read all 3 menus. No wonder the staff are on overload. We got some salad, gyoza and oysters and here is how it scored:Gomaae Chicken Salad $6.80: this was the first dish and it was fabulous 4/5Pork and Garlic Gyoza $6.80: this was also pretty good 4/5Chefs Special Gyoza $6.80: this was just ok 3/5Shrimp and Chives Gyoza: this was all chives no shrimp. Pretty sad 2/5Coffin Bay Oysters with Ponzu $19/6: these were just ok for me. They didn't have much liquor and didn't taste super fresh. 3/5This place was hit or miss for me but I would come back ย to eat the salad and pork gyoza.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent oyster bar in Melbourne.
The Sydney Rocks oysters were nice and creamy and really fit well with the Japanese style green chilli and Yuzu Tobasco sauce. Quite refreshing! They have many other oysters to choose from and various styles to prepare them with. Different oysters based on availability. Excellent oyster bar to dine at if you're in Melbourne! Of course, while you're here, indulge yourself with the Lobster & Buckwheat Risotto (fresh lobster meat, lobster stock, 63 degree Celsius poached egg, mixed mushrooms and rocket salad) and Moreton Bay Bugs Crispy Rice in garlic butter. Moreton Bay Bugs are not bugs at all but more like a giant prawn, found in Australia. Wash it all down with an Apple/Lychee Tea(pot). Great spot to get your lobster and oyster fix! Oh, and their Souffle Pancake is amazing! Super soft and fluffy!
