Unconventional Diner Washington Reviews from The Last Year
Everything was excellent! Unconventional but
Everything was excellent! Unconventional but delicious! Love the crunchy kale Definitely recommend
Went there over the weekend and expected it to not be as
Went there over the weekend and expected it to not be as busy due to the rain. Well we were wrong. To sit inside there was a wait for more than an hour, but they did have an opening outside. Since it wasn't hot, sitting outside was just fine. Food was good, service was decent, and I say decent because our server didn't check on us as frequently as I would have expected. There were 4 of us, the burger was awesome, the people who both had the chicken sandwich also praised it was good and then the last was a salad-don't recall which one but it was good.

I have been to Unconventional Diner a few times and I haven't had a bad meal yet. Reservations are strongly recommended for the best experience as brunch is always busy on the weekends. Service is always quick and food comes out quickly while still being hot and fresh. This is a great place to take guest that are visiting.
Excellent food, drink and service.
Awesome place to visit before a show at 9:30 Club or The Atlantis!
Not unconventional, and not a diner.
Food was tasty. When we arrived we were told they might not be able to accommodate us. A couple minutes later someone emerged from the back and said they could but we would have to leave in 90 minutes. We said fine. It was funny because we were escorted to a whole side room full of empty tables. Waitstaff was friendly. I would suggest they improve service at the front, and re-brand the concept. Pricey for what it was.
We were so lucky to have stayed so close to here.
We came unexpectedly at 8am on a Saturday. Even then, there were people here eating breakfast. We split the blueberry pancakes and the loaded breakfast biscuits with a side of grits. The loaded biscuits and side of grits may be the best brunch food I've had in a long time. The service was also super friendly. I wish I ate here every morning when I was here!
OMGoodness.
.. put your phone down and go! The food was delicious. We had the poutine, with beef and mushrooms, with the blueberry pancakes (topped with some kind of cream cheese whipped goodness), scrambled eggs and country bacon. BAAABBBYY... you best believe everything was eaten. Everything was impeccable. The service was top notch, with friendly waitstaff, full of smiles and suggestions. I couldn't finish my food, but hubs ate his and finished mine. Make sure you have reservations, or pray to find some open bar seats! Bravo on all execution! This was an al around 10! LOL
Food was truly amazing and truly inventive.
Restaurant was noisy, but service was speedy. Very highly recommend if you're in the area.
Outstanding breakfast, lunch and dinner were all fantastic.
Shrimp Scampi is off the charts. Service is the best and the prices are more than fair. Go!
The real deal and possibly one of the best restaurants in
The real deal and possibly one of the best restaurants in DC. It is not cheap, but the quality matches the prices. And while they include automatic 20% gratuity on any size table, they make it very. very clear with it on the menu, highlighted on the bill and the waiter telling you ... and I appreciated that. Besides, the service was fantastic and would have tipped 20%+ anyways. I had the meatloaf which was wow, good. I didn't know a meatloaf could taste that good and have so much flavor. And the mashed potatoes it came with were out of this world good. My friends also greatly enjoyed their seafood dishes. The appetizer of taquitos was just ok. The drinks were also delish and made strong. Worth the hype and I'll be back soon.
2nd time here.
About as good as you can get in downtown D C. Great variety and service. Great variety and quantity was just right!! Our server Kareem was just a great guy. Keep an eye out for tip being above the line as most restaurants in DC hit you for this.
YUM. And great service!
This place was amazing in many ways. We had a reservation (on Mother's Day) and were seated immediately. Everything was clean. Server was there in an instant, taking care of us and answering my multitude of questions about gluten and other assorted food intolerances. They were EXCELLENT in dealing with all of that. The best part, though: the food. Five people, five different dishes, all absolutely delicious! Plus we got two sides to share, which were delightful. We live in Maryland, so it's kind of a hike for us - but honestly, we would do it again in a heartbeat. The "all day brunch" was wonderful. By the way, they add a gratuity - and then they TELL you (twice!) that they've added the gratuity, in addition to listing it on the menu. Which of course makes me want to give them even more than the 20%! All-around great place.
Good choice.
Stopped in on a Wednesday for lunch. Easily found street parking. They have a dozen or so tables on the sidewalk. Inside is large and very loud. We were seated immediately without a reservation. Their fresh juice is so good. Salad and chicken sandwich with fries were fresh and tasty. The menu and bill make it very clear, a 20% service charge is added to every bill. Which isn’t a gratuity, it’s 100% employee wages. Take that how it hits.
Enjoy the Patio
Sit outside and enjoy the people watching or make a reservation for inside since it is packed ! Had the breakfast sandwich which has a great combination of food and not too big you can’t savor every bite. Comes with a mountain of seasoned fries.
This place deserves it reputation. It did not disappoint.
Every dish was delicious and I will come back again next time I am in DC. Service was great and the food offered was “unconventional”.
Delicious
Food was phenomenal!! We ordered two appetizers and two entrees along with two of their flavored lemonades. Everything was delicious. Just awesome. Really well seasoned and enjoyable. We loved the waiter and all his recommendations as well. Overall we can’t speak highly enough about our visit and experience there. Highly recommend.
The food was large portioned and absolutely delicious.
It was so good we were all overjoyed with it. I loved the coffee but one of our party was not crazy about it. I think it was maybe too strong but then she drank it anyway. It was fresh and hot. James was our server, he was friendly, made jokes back and forth with us and walked us through all the questions we had. The menu had a southern lean to it which is fine with me. I had the (I think it was called) the overloaded biscuits. It was fantastic. I want to know how to make that bacon jam!! The place was large, airy and a noise level like you would expect in a diner. The tables were far enough from one another that you have enough space to have a conversation without worrying about eavesdroppers. Definitely go here !
I went during the week for breakfast and the food was
I went during the week for breakfast and the food was delicious. It is exactly as the name says....unconventional. I got the chicken & waffles, which was a cheddar and cornbread waffle definitely not your typical waffle, and the chicken tenders were moist and drizzled with a honey sriracha sauce. I was told that the chicken is fried in a pressure cooker of some sort but it really helps to keep the breast meat from drying out. It comes with something called granny gravy on the side but I was not a fan but the habanero butter OMG! I need that by the batch. I also got a side of grits to taste and they were creamy and flavorful. I was greeted by two hosts who were very nice, and they stored my backpack while I ate which I thought was very nice. I sat at one of the bar tables and Roberto the bar manager waited on me and he was awesome! Very easy to talk to, answered my questions, provided recommendations and checked on me frequently. Later another gentleman assisted and he was just as nice. The decor is chic and the establishment is well lit. They offer indoor and outdoor seating. Abstract art added a nice touch to the decor. They do offer breakfast every day until a little after 3PM and they have dinner options as well; full bar and desserts. I must say I saw plenty of the blueberry pancakes floating by and they look delicious so now I have a reason to come back.

My husband & I stopped in to Unconventional Diner while
My husband & I stopped in to Unconventional Diner while exploring DC one weekend. Very glad we did :)! The restaurant was cute and semi casual. You could turn it into a nice date if you wanted to! The ambiance was cute for any occasion! The service was great, they recommended some amazing things that we ended up trying & loving! We tried... The cast iron brussels, I didn't know I needed these in my life! They were coated in a tiki masala, which may sound out there... but it worked beautifully! The perfect crunch & spice. The mac & cheese was ridiculously delicious! I am usually really picky when it comes to mac... but they did it right! It was creamy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked! The double cheese burger & fries, and it was a mouthful! A perfect medium cook & this tasty "sexy sauce" really set the burger apart from regular. Overall a great option you are looking for tad more upscale burger. We finished with the Mango Passion Fruit sorbet, and it was the perfect closer! Creamy & the flavors were so sharp and fresh! We would definitely go back... I have my eye on that brunch menu now!
Delicious Food! Awesome Drinks! & Great Vibes! Celebrated
Delicious Food! Awesome Drinks! & Great Vibes! Celebrated my bestie's birthday at Unconventional Diner at it was amazing from start to finish. Reservations honored on time; seated at a nice table and our server was so sweet and kind. She recommended entree's and cocktails to start the night and we were thrilled. We enjoyed the following: 1.) Cocktail: Stone Fruit Spritzer 2.) App's: Spreads & Breads 3.) Entree's: Chicken Parm Florentine and French Dip Pappardelle 4.) Dessert: Basque Cheesecake Everything was superb!!! We couldn't have asked for a better night. Can't wait to return!! Additional perks: Street parking available; or you can park in the Cambria Hotel lot and walk 2 blocks! Super convenient!
Good food and good service.
Solid meal all around. Would definitely come back with the family.
I don't know how this place has so many reviews and so many
I don't know how this place has so many reviews and so many good ones. We flew in today and I looked on here to find a place and it looked good but the food is just not good. Soggy French toast, smallest chicken on top of a gross smaller waffle. Service was awful and I'm sure it's because they get an AUTOMATIC 20% gratuity. Avoid this place.
Fun with food
Enjoyed our outdoor visit to this foot spot which specializes in multi-national comfort with a twist. Enjoyed conventional classic cocktails with delectable food. I'd pass on the head of cauliflower, which was good not great. I took matzo ball soup to go. It was among my favorite things that I ate during this visit and was able to eat for days hot and cold.
Brunch is amazing.
I had the blueberry pancakes. The very best ever. Bacon was topnotch also.
I had heard many good things about this restaurant and it
I had heard many good things about this restaurant and it lived up to the hype! The food was tasty with many different options from curry to chicken parmesan to chicken pot pie poppers. The waiters were helpful and the hostesses were friendly. The interior is very fun with accent walls, colorful graffiti paintings, and modern chandeliers.
Unconventional, creative and delicious dessert
Stopped in for dessert and sat at the bar. Great service. One dessert was stellar - it looked like breakfast eggs and bacon and was full of flavor. The other dessert was a cheesecake that was good, yet very conventional and not that exciting.
Great pre tour dinner and drinks
Just had a pre tour dinner with my daughter and the food was great. My daughter had the alcohol free fruit punch and meatloaf (a lot of food) and it came with a side of mashed potatoes- all delicious. I had the pina colada and I haven’t had one that fresh with real coconut since I was in Puerto Rico ( I would come back for that alone). I had the sweet potato curry and it was fantastic. We also got the cornbread and it was good but beware the iron skillet they bring is hot- they didn’t warn me and I burned my finger - but when I come back in a few months I’m bringing the rest of our family here.
The best diner not diner
Superb cuisine! This is described as a diner adaptation but it definitely exceeds any expectations. It has a Mediterranean and middle eastern flair, with items like falafel that you can add to a broccoli /quinoa salad and cornbread with some paprika like butter atop. Yum. I didn't want the meal to end and wish I lived nearby to frequent!
Great food . Well worth a visit
This was a great recommendation from a member of the family. So good we came back twice. On the first night we sat outside and were served by Hugh who was an undoubted enthusiast for the menu. What was so good was that many of the mains could be added to by a variety of proteins making the menu adaptable for all tastes. The first night we both chose the Lebanese Fried Rice with chicken in my case and shrimp for my wife and it was spectacular. The other dishes we tried over the two nights, Bonsai Broccoli, Cuban Stew were great as were the desserts. The Hibiscus Citrus Cocktail is a must try! Sadly service on the second night was not so good and we left without dessert as it was slow. I'm not going to mention the server's name. Great value for money EXCEPT that at the bottom of the bill it says" 20% service charge will be added to your bill. 100% of this is used to pay our service team members' wages. Additional tips are not expected but always appreciated." I find this insulting. I am happy to tip for good service, although as a Brit where 10% is acceptable 20% is not, but in the case of the second server he did not deserve a tip as his service was poor, but put this way it almost suggests that tips ARE the wages. I hope this is not the case.
The food is very tasty
I stayed here three times during my stay in Washington DC. The food was truly delicious every time. That's why I kept coming back. The restaurant looks cozy on the inside. Two out of three times I was also helped and spoken to very kindly. Had nice conversations during breakfast at the bar. I would like to give 5 stars, but on my third visit I unfortunately had to deal with an overbearing bartender who could not say a kind word and who, without asking, shoved the bill under my nose, while I wanted to order a dessert and a drink. Hopefully this experience was an exception. Nevertheless, I would recommend going here.
Unique delicious breakfast
Cool vibes, amazing unique breakfast - loaded biscuit and chicken & waffles - delicious mix of flavors. Service was great! Everything was 10/10. Still dreaming of the food 🤤
Excellent
Food and cocktails was very good! And server Henry C was so nice, always checking on us if everything was good and the wait for the food was short!
Great experience. Outstanding service
Excellent meal. The Unconventional Diner was firing on all cylinders the night we went. The service was exemplary, drinks were outstanding and the food was fantastic. What a diverse, friendly crowd of people. Lovely watching the crowd of guests. Being pampered by the outstanding staff.
Holy Breakfast Biscuits, Batman!
My Bobby's still in shock! I've had insomnia for a week since I devoured The Loaded Breakfast Biscuits .. I think I'm addicted. They're M M Good!

The site doesn't have resources to properly execute a reservation transfer. Some places allow it however the best bet is to open a chat on the listing from the seller and communicate there

Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
