Food is incredible and service is well trained, attentive, and very helpful. Greens are a can't miss, corn bread phenomenal, and gumbo is at the very top of any I have ever had.

Everything was amazing! One of the things we loved was how our waiter took our order and customized how everything would be served to make sure we had a full experience. He made some amazing recommendations, and we enjoyed every dish. We also loved the ambiance. Not to mention, we were 20 mins late for our reservation and the host was extremely accommodating. There are some items we want to try so we will definitely be back!
Be the first to ReplyThe vibe is good.
The food is pricey but worth it. I've been there twice and had salmon both times. It is very good. The service was excellent. The overall experience was outstanding
Be the first to ReplyOoowwweeee what a hit! I mean I didn't expect anything less
Ooowwweeee what a hit! I mean I didn't expect anything less from a James Beard award winning chef! Here's a little rundown of the things I ordered. Fried green tomatoes - cornmeal crusted coating. The perfect bite. There was a crunch and then you got into the tomato. The sauce brought the creaminess, but the addition of the shrimp took it to another level for me. The shrimp were plump and gave a slight seafood flavor that brought it home. The best starter! The greens are delicious and I make greens every week. I'm trying to figure out what that flavor is. Maybe apple cider vinegar? Sugar? Truly balances the bitterness of the collards. Either way, I truly enjoyed and so did my baby girl. She ate a plate full and wanted more. This cornbread is superior to any other cornbread. Just order it. Full stop!! Buttery, moist. We should've ordered 2. The pork steak is so tender. I didn't know what to expect but wow. The outside is crispy, almost like grilled and the sauce is not too sweet. A very balanced bbq sauce. The smothered red cabbage brings an earthy element to the dish too. I'm very happy I stepped outside of my comfort zone and ordered. Finally, I had the scallops and was blown away. I'm normally not a scallops girly! The scallops had the perfect sear and a grilled char with the black eyed pea carrot medley there was a hit of spice and once I added a bite of the charred broccoli - I felt like I was in heaven. Every dish had a lot of flavors happening at once and it was so good. I mean incredible. Can't say enough good things about this place. But also want to note how kind the people were. I don't know if he was the manager or what, but he saw we had our toddler at the table and made us feel so welcomed. I appreciated that because sometimes it feels like you're not supposed to take your kids to restaurants. So thank you to him and the server who also shared that he has kids. I will be back soon!

Loved the atmosphere and the service.

"I had a wonderful dining experience at Virtue! The southern fish was perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with just the right amount of seasoning. The macaroni was creamy and flavorful, the ultimate comfort food. The atmosphere at Virtue was cozy and welcoming, with a charming southern flair. The service was impeccable, attentive without being intrusive. The attention to detail in both the food and the decor was evident, creating a memorable dining experience. I highly recommend Virtue to anyone looking for delicious southern cuisine in a welcoming environment. It's the perfect place to enjoy a comforting meal with friends and family. Will be coming back!
Be the first to ReplyI have had Virtue on my list for a couple years that I need
I have had Virtue on my list for a couple years that I need to try this restaurant, and I am so glad I finally was able to. Everything you've heard about this restaurant is true: amazing food, fine American southern cuisine, etc. I have to say, I wanted to try everything on the menu because it all sounded delicious and wasn't just another Chicago steakhouse. Virtue is different than most of the well known restaurants you hear about. The biscuits had a honey drizzle on top which I wished had a little more. I like a good honey sweetness of my biscuits and I feel like it didn't have too much, but the biscuits were still a must try! I had to order the blackened catfish to try some southern cuisine. The catfish was cooked beautifully, seasoned very well where it had a little spicy but not too spicy. This dish definitely gave it the southern vibe with the rice and carrots. All a great combination, especially for the rice to soak in the flavors from the catfish. My friend ordered the Short Rib and it just sliced right off as you cut a piece. The creamed spinach and potatoes gave it a nice touch as they were creamy and there to soak up the sauce from the short rib. We had to try the Mac & cheese because it's a southern cuisine classic and who doesn't love Mac and cheese. The top layer of toasted cheese on top just makes the Mac and cheese great with every bite. You can never go wrong with this side dish. The staff were all great, always checking in on us and answering any questions we had. They were very attentive and came to us quickly if we ever needed anything. Everything was great to eat and the portions were large where I had leftovers to take home except for the biscuits. I cannot wait to come here and try some more of their menu.

I've been waiting to dine at Virtue for awhile-finally my hubby and I decided that we don't have to wait for a special occasion- we can make date night a special occasion. The ambiance is cozy and chill-low lighting, art everywhere and an interesting touch-tobacco baskets line the ceiling in the dining room, providing an interesting textural feature to the decor. The service was very attentive, even though we were given a carafe of water, our glasses never went below half full without someone refilling them. We had the biscuits and gumbo to start-both were delicious. The gumbo tastes like it's been brewing for days-the flavors are so rich and textured. For our entrees we got the short rib and the fish and grits. Both were perfectly seasoned and delicious z for desert we split the red velvet cake-it was the moistest, most delicious red velvet cake that I'd ever had. We will definitely be back-I wanted to try at least four of the entrees. The cocktails were also interesting and well-balanced. Make sure to make reservations-it's packed all night long- I heard a walk-in get quoted a 75 minute wait. Check it out!
Be the first to ReplySeriously great on every level.
Joe, the server brought us great foods which he thought we would love. We insisted on the gizzards and in addition to that he brought us cornbread, collard greens, short rib, scallops, and for dessert , banana pudding. I can't wait to go back.
Be the first to ReplyVisited here for my man's birthday.
We thoroughly enjoyed the food ambiance and service. Seasoning was heavy handed but that did not bother us. The chipotle black beans were a huge surprise treat for my tastebuds. We of course indulged in the "trifecta"; cornbread, Mac and cheese, and collard greens. I ordered the Blackened Cat fish. The dish my partner ordered had the black beans but I don't see it on the menu anymore... I think it was steak? We also got cocktails which were on the side of palate cleansing, whereas I usually prefer sweet. Will revisit

Outstanding service and incredible food!My family and I really enjoy eating there from time to time. The atmosphere is always warm and inviting thanks to the professional staff. True artisans in the industry. Plus, they have fantastic holiday meal packages for pick up! These have been a big hit when we gather with extended family during the holiday season.

The name Virtue is a guiding principle of this Hyde Park restaurant. The food is always excellent and consistent, the staff is warm and attentive, and a feeling of both community and elevated dining are ever present. Can't recommend Virtue highly enough. Chef Erick Williams and his team have created something special.
Be the first to ReplyHave been here three times and it was delicious every time.
I love the vibe in the room by the bar, but if you want a more lowkey energy, better for hearing everyone in your party talk the room by the kitchen is more ideal! For appetizers you have to try the gumbo when you first go (some of the best I've ever had & I've spent a lot of time in NOLA & Houston). The smashed potatoes are also amazing they have a great almost sour cream and chive flavor and are closer to mashed potatoes with a nice texture! The corn bread is also a classic and sure to please everyone. Turkey & collared greens was also amazing. For entrees I've gotten the étouffée twice and hope to get it again soon! The gritz are rich and buttery, packed with flavor and the ettoufee itself is thick and packs a great flavorful punch. I also had a fall cauliflower entree and a fall squash and puffed rice appetizer. I'm not sure that they are on the menu anymore but I enjoyed both and especially liked the squash appetizer it had a surprising mix of textures and flavors that I would never thing to put together but found delightful! Finally, if you like banana pudding you have to get theirs. It is the BEST banana pudding I have ever had and I think about it multiple times each week without fail. Honestly you will want to get an extra one to go, it's that good!! There is a beautiful banana flavor that stays with you but lacks any gross artificial taste. Drinks (alcoholic, mocktails, & iced tea) are all great as well! Servers are very knowledgeable about the menu and have great recommendations! Hope to be back very soon!

Make a reservation. I saw people being rejected at the door, and it tugged at my heart. No one was being unfair. It was heartbreaking. Ok, moving past that. From the moment you walk in, you are acknowledged and taken care of. The team, yes, a clear team. Like fingers on a hand, they are all working together to create the absolute best experience. You do not need to ask for water or utensils. I have been here several times. Always consistent. The food. The beet salad was fresh. The cheese was creamy. The pistachios were some of the best nuts I ever had! Have you ever cracked a pistachio and accidentally ate a burned one? Not in this salad! Blackened catfish. Perfect. Grits creamy. Collard greens perfect. The cornbread. It comes in its own pot. Hot out of the oven. This is a must-have. This review is longer than I like, and if you've read this far, thanks! Last but not least. Our server Allen R. is awesome! Thank you! Bottom line, go here. MAKE A RESERVATION!

Absolutely incredible and unbelievably delicious experience! Every dish executed at the "best ever" level. Shrimp & crawfish grits, short rib, chicken, fish, gumbo, pimento cheese biscuits, honey butter cornbread, carrot cake and banana pudding were over the top. Service was warm, friendly and professional- every one is so proud of their chef. You feel the love
Be the first to ReplyThis has become my yearly "Happy Birthday" spot.
I've never been disappointed by anything I've ordered. My friends & family have heard my praises of this place! They've come & told others & so on & so on!The service is Great (our last server, Anthony, was absolutely amazing!
Be the first to ReplyThe food and service was outstanding.
My party of three had between us the catfish dinner, gumbo as entree, greens, Mac and cheese, cornbread as mains. Desserts of banana pudding and carrot cake. Everything wonderful. Our server Allen was phenomenal from beginning to end. He described the menu highlighting popular items, was very courteous and patient to request as well as accommodating to them. Our only issue continues to be the haphazard seating policies. We were there for happy hour at 4pm, told there would be a 90 minute wait. Then we express well it would be over then, but besides just 3 people sitting at the bar the tables around it were all empty except one. So one in my party says well how long for a table, hostess again says 90 minutes. As we get ready to leave another hostess says well you can get a table in the bar area but you have to be done in an hour. So we take it because the friend really wanted to try the place but us other two were really put off (we've both been there before) . It turned out to be nice as I wrote above but I probably will pass in the future. The "down payment " thing, employee health insurance surcharge and then it all being presented to you like the establishment is "giving " you a discount of the $10 you paid to reserve its alot just my opinion.

Amazing food!Delicious cocktails!Great customer service! We made reservations for 6:30pm. No open tables when we arrived. The staff apologized and gave us complimentary glass of bubbly. We were seated at the best window table and was greeted by the most professional waiter Rog G. She was extremely knowledgeable and informative helping us navigate through the menu throughout our entire dinning experience. Excellence!!!
Be the first to ReplyEverything was amazing.
I had the beef short ribs that covered creamed spinach and potatoes. I also had a side of collard greens that would've made my great grandmother proud. The cornbread was an additional treat as well. For desert I had caramel apple cheesecake and it was worth every penny. Everything was deliciously seasoned and well thought out flavor wiseThe staff was great and although they didn't have any dishes for kids they weee quick to bring a side of rice which my 3y/o nephew devoured. It was a cozy and upscale feel as well with attentive staff that all worked together Also- my grandmother has a bit of dementia but she remembered the banana pudding and short ribs she had from there and talked about it days later, so I'm questioning her diagnosis (seriously)
Be the first to ReplyThis was my second time here.
The first time was nice, April 2022. A year later, the customer service declined tremendously! The manager Jesus was not empathetic and the waiter, Joseph, was quite rude. The waiter took my glass off the table before I finished my drink. I was appalled on how they were so welcoming to the white patrons but treated my friend and me, two Black women. They were dismissive and rushed us throughout the entire experience. It was embarrassing as I invited someone from out of town to dinner. I thought this snide Hyde Park pompous attitude was a myth. I would love to have a conversation with the owner as I know he would be ashamed.I followed up with a call to the restaurant to reiterate my concerns. Jesus, who stated he was the managing partner, told me there was no one else I could speak with. I reminded him of the power of social media. Again, horrible experience, and I'm good not going back there.

I ordered the pork chop and it was delicious and tender it came with sweet potato and cabbage. My husband order braised short ribs with creamed spinach and mash potatoes. It was also delicious and tender. Our waiter was amazing.

While visiting Chicago someone told me about this Michelin Star and James Beard award winning restaurant. I can say that I was not disappointed at all! The service at the bar was great and so were the drinks. Then the food itself was just amazing. The greens were well seasoned; the lemon chicken was flavorful and fresh; the short rib was so tender it was unbelievable; the Mac and cheese was creamy and flavorful; the short rib was so good that I couldn't believe it. The short rib was tender and seasoned, but complimented by the creamed spinach very well. We even ordered the chicken wings and they were deliciously fried, as well as served with a perfect biscuit and homemade hot sauce.
Be the first to ReplyVery disappointed in customer service.
My partner and I had reservations for my birthday and I was so excited. Unfortunately, I tested positive for COVID 4 days before our reservations. I understand there are no refunds for the $50 reservation, but I let the restaurant know immediately via email (I'm sure they were able to book the table) and inquired about their COVID policy and if that $50 could be applied to a future bill. I understand canceling for whatever but I actually HAD to cancel given public health guidelines and not wanting to spread the virus.3 emails later, 5 attempted calls when they are open (phone just rings and rings) and I have not received a response. I was so excited to try Virtue and am very disappointed in the lack of a response and a policy that is aligned with public health guidelines.

Its my third time here and it's been consistent every time! It's such a great neighborhood gem in Hyde Park.If they're offering any seasonal items on their menu, make sure you order it because it's delicious and it's only there for a limited time. It's always busy so make sure you make you more reservations! The reservation fees will be applied towards your bill.I see that they have happy hour and it's pretty worth it if you're in the area! I'm not sure if you can make reservations for happy hour though. Please let me know if you can! Here's some of my highlights from dinner:Mac n cheese: their baked Mac n cheese is delicious! It's cheesy good. If you're lactose intolerant, take a dairy pill before having this! Gumbo: yes, you need to try this. It's hard to find good gumbo in the midwest!Lemon chicken: I get this every time when I'm here because their chicken is so juicy and flavorful! For dessert, I love their banana pudding and carrot cake. Their carrot cake is baked to perfection and the brittle topping adds texture to the bite! I could've went without the caramel sauce because it was a little too sweet for me. If it's your first time here, you gotta get their banana pudding! You will not be disappointed.
