🤢 2/5 - Wabi was slipping the night we were there

We’ve eaten here before more than once, at least four times. We had two family dinners there with at least 6 to 8 people. It’s always been pretty reliable, nothing really fantastic like the reviewer that raved about the place, but definitely solid. Our experience tonight was definitely disappointing and not what we expected. We ordered “Angry Shrimp,” a noodle and broth dish. This was incredibly hot and we are used to hot food. We ask if it could be remade With a Szechuan level of spiciness vs ghost pepper, in other words not off the charts hot. The kitchen was kind of offended (Chef Rain?) and said that it was impossible. All we asked was to remove the massive amount of pepper flakes, the next time they made it, I don’t think that would’ve been too much to ask as we were fairly good customers and had been to Wabi with large family groups in the holidays. The Karrage chicken was brown/black and overcooked. It was obviously burnt. We had maybe four or five bites and that was it. It was dry inside the oily burnt batter crust. We placed a couple of nigiri sushi orders. The salmon sushi was decent, but the bright red of farmed salmon. The Japanese Haikaido scallops were not good, they we’re starting to turn yellow and we’re perhaps not the freshest. We had rolls the last few times we went and they were pretty good. I wonder if the quality has dropped it. We have planned on ordering rolls and more sushi, but based on the first several orders we decide to bail and ordered fast food from Door Dash after we got home because we were hungry. The staff were all very friendly and sociable. Our waitress was very nice and service was good and fairly quick. The check came to over $100 before a $20 tip. We were kind of in a hurry to go home so I neglected to check whether or not we were charged for the angry shrimp. It’s surprising that they’re only two reviews. My recollection was that wabi had accumulated quite a few. I believe they also have another branch in Culver City. For a Sunday night, the restaurant was busy when we were there and it looked like there were a lot of millennial and Gen X locals having a good time. Given that Hama Sushi and Sugarfish are reliably good, local and less expensive, we probably won’t be going back to Wabi. But I am hoping it was an off night at Wabi and that we had an unusual experience.
