Amazing bakery
On the hunt for the perfect croissant I came across this bakery in the neighbourhood we were visiting. The lineup was long at 9am on a Saturday but it moved very fast. Once at the front of the line my eyes where greeted with a beautiful assortment of bakery goods. I had to try them all. Well at least most of them. We tried 5 different croissants, as well as purchasing a baguette that came highly recommended by one of the patrons in line with us. They were amazing. So fresh and perfectly baked. The service was warm, welcoming and fast. The price point is high but you get what you pay for here. I’ve paid similar prices for a far inferior croissant so I don’t mind the prices here. I consider it a special treat.

Excellent bakery. Went multiple times for morning pastries during our time in La Jolla. Opens at 8:30 and there’s usually a lineup but it moves quickly and it’s definitely worth the short wait.

Wayfarer Bread-La Jolla. Small bakery producing some quality products in La Jolla. Recently reopened after a Covid related closure. Currently limiting capacity inside to make purchases but have a nice outdoor area to wait/eat. From what I saw being purchased on my visit their fresh baked breads are very popular. But I was on pastry quest today and all these items looked delicious also. Choices today were: two cookies-Ginger Molasses & Salted Chocolate Chunk, Kouign Amann, and Almond Croissant. We ate our cookies almost immediately and were very happy and impressed. The Ginger Molasses had much more of a “fresh” ginger bite than most which I loved and the Chocolate chunk cookie was an extremely decadent version of a chocolate chip that will satisfy ANY fan of that cookie. Our almond croissant (spur of the moment buy as he was small and looked lonely) was very good. Light and airy with many visible sheet layers and flavorful almond filling. The Kouign Amann was chosen to wait until the next morning and while still sweet and tasty may have suffered a bit by waiting. Not as moist the next day I believe. My mistake. Their offerings on our visit also included some savory filled croissants and premade sandwiches that looked very good. Wish I had a place like this somewhere close to where I live. Recommended.

Pastry aficionado here. Snob even. Long story short: it does't get much better than this. Slight crisp on the outside and soft on the inside - top notch. Had a passionfruit pastry and it was sublime.
Be the first to ReplyAm I the only one who gets kind of an Australian vibe....?
I lived in Australia for 2 years, and this place really gives me an Aussie vibe. Their coffee is amazing, really smooth and lovely. They have flat whites on the menu; they sell Anzac cookies; and they had pastries with passionfruit. All of these things scream Australia to me.
Either way, this place is totally worth a stop. I'm not normally a pastry person, but I had to get their passionfruit pastry, and WOW, that thing was so good. Crispy and light as air, it's hard to believe something that great exists. I also loved the coffee. The spot is really cute with a pergola-covered patio for outdoor seating. I took my pastries to go and ate them at a park overlooking the beach nearby. Highly recommend a stop here!
Not worthy of the hype
Wayfarer has amazing reviews on TripAdvisor and Eater. The lines on weekends are crazy long, partly because they only have two people working the counter. The pastries are good, but not great. The coffee is just ok. With so many other bakeries/pastry shops in the area, Wafarer is not my first choice.

Every time I have the opportunity to introduce a friend to Wayfarer I am happy to do so. This is a must go to place anytime I am in the neighborhood and I am always happy to go out of my way to stop for coffee, pastries and a salad if I arrive after 11

I was just recommended to come here by the chef at George’s.....wow he was spot on. This is a bakery that will make you smile the moment you walk in. You’re at "home" with the smell of the bread....fresh and inviting. Very nice people, fair price. Leave the bread in the grocery store....come here for a fresh baguette and rolls. Loved that we know about this. Go there once, you’ll never eat store bought breads again

Don’t miss a trip (or two ) to wayfarer bread . Outstanding bakery and sandwich items . Plus , they’ll even cut a loaf in half for you . Aromas alone are worth standing in line for ... genuinely nice folks here make this a quality stop .

Oh my! This place does have wonderful bread, but also lovely pastries. Amazing sandwiches, ~great bakers, lovely location! It has it ALL!
A must try stop for coffee, lunch or a round of bread!!
Yea! Great bakery in Bird Rock!
Breads are exceptional, baked goods are excellent. Croissants are the best I have ever had. Service is slower because they are slammed. Great food equals longer lines. Staff were okay but being friendlier would be helpful.
They need two baristas. Seating inside and a small patio outside.
