Fireworks of yakiniku delight
Excellent course. I haven’t had as tasty yakiniku or any beef for that matter since I last visited Tokyo several years ago. Took a quite spontaneous date for Christmas Eve dinner without knowing the place before. My first impression of the decor and atmosphere was a little disappointed, with some ventilation noise and casualish space, but as soon as the dishes started coming in along with the very nice personal service, all this was quickly forgotten. And not to forget the birthday special. A wonderful experience!
Be the first to ReplyVery good yakiniku, worth the calories! Delicious!
We had the lunch Omakase. Beef was high quality, expertly cooked to perfection. Their sauces were delicious and complemented the beef so well. Will go back!
Be the first to ReplyA marvelous meat-lover’s journey with Tomoko-san
Thank goodness for Tomoko-san who taught us that most beef cuts should not be charred but just gently seared on the grilled. She did all the cooking and we savoured every piece she placed delicately onto our plates. You won't get Matsusaka or Kobe beef here, but you will get a variety of good wagyu cuts from different parts of Japan. The space is cozy and best of all, they have excellent ventilation system so you won't smell of BBQ for days! Thank you so much, Tomoko-san, for the most unique meat birthday cake in the shape of a heart - very memorable!
Be the first to ReplyNice atmosphere, great service
Small restaurant with limited seating. Service is top notch and the server cooks and looks after your meat so it’s cooked just right. Explanation given for all the omakase cuts. Everyone gives rave reviews about the beef cuts but what stood out for me was their cold noodles. It was excellent and wonderful texture.
Be the first to ReplyThe best Yakiniku in Singapore
We’ve been to YAKINIQUEST twice, both times to celebrate birthdays. Both times we just feel like we have to come back again soon!! The service is just so amazing just like you are in Japan. The beef is grilled by the staff to perfection while explaining where the meat is from. The Wagyu beef in all dishes, may it be in soup, handcut ramen shape, or grilled ( lightly), were superb. We had the Wagyu fanatic course (S$168 ++ per person) both times and feel that it’s definitely worth it. Due to Covid, now you can only order omakase courses but if you feel you need more food at the end, you can order more of any of the items in the course. We also had sake pairing (6 sakes) with the meal the first time we went last year (2019). This was good to taste different types of sake (dry or smooth) and understand where your taste lies. For me, I lean towards fruity and smooth sakes. Second time we visited (oct 2020), we just ordered 180ml of sake that we enjoyed from last time . Highly recommend to try Yukinobijin sake from Akita prefecture which is listed under “fruity aroma & smooth” in the menu but it was very well balanced that even those who like dry sakes, will enjoy it very much. Also if you are brave, try the tongue which is bouncy and juicy goodness, giving a different pleasure from typical Wagyu marbled softness and flavor. Don’t miss it if you are a Wagyu lover and Gaga over Japanese service and hospitality!!!
Be the first to ReplyReally not the best
We came here for their most expensive omakase dinner course. Having tried both A5 and A4 grade wagyu in Japan we hope we can get similar taste here. And maybe because we have tried really fantastic beef in Japan, so we feel that the beef at Yakiniquest is not very delicious. But......
The taste of their miyazaki wagyu is very very underwhelming. The texture is good, but the taste is really lacking and does not have depth to it. I suspect their beef has lost all the flavor already during air transport. But the thing I disliked most is the "Tare" sauce they used. It was too sweet it covered the taste of the beef entirely! The server who grilled our meat did inform us it tastes like singapore bak kua? but why? Why would I want to taste bak kua in a YAKINIKU shop!!!!???
We paid more than $400 after gst and service charge for 2 of us.
One good thing is the service. Don't know his name but he was polite, attentive and well-groomed.
It was a delicious Anniversary
Made a surprise rsvp for an anniversary dinner. Staff were so sweet, calling to confirm the reservation and informed me that they’ll do something to commemorate the special day.
We were served by M ( or at least that’s the name he gave me I think!), he expertly explained on each dish before serving and the accompanying sauces. Food was excellent! The beef and uni combo was fantastic, as well as the root of tongue. Even the salad was so good. The dessert was an excellent ending to the meal.
Mind-boggling service, unsatisfying food, terrible cost-performance
A birthday friend was thinking yakiniku and I recalled many reviews praising Yakiniquest as the best in Singapore. It wasn't cheap but if it was as good as the reviews claimed, then I would be happy to try it out. It turned out to be one of the most disappointing restaurant experiences of the year.
We were brought to an upstairs table right beside the stairs, near the kitchen and the washroom, and everyone would have to walk past our table. Asked for a better located table but was told they were reserved. Wanted to remind the staff that we had made reservations too and also turned up earlier than others but decided to settle on what they had given us as we didn't want to make a fuss. Unfortunately, our area proved to be way too warm... even before any grilling had started. The highly uncomfortable temperature lasted till the end of our meal because the aircon literally was blowing straight past our heads without circulating around. The situation was made even more unsatisfactory since most of the other tables remained empty throughout the night.
Service failure was evident from the start. The waitress assigned to our table was genteel but very inadequate as a wait staff. Once we were seated, she placed the menus before us... and stood before our table without a word. No mention that she was aware of our pre-order of the omakase sets (pre-order was a requirement for omakase), no asking if we wanted a drink, no nothing. She just stood there, without saying anything for a good while. I had to nicely remind her that I had a pre-order of the omakase sets. Yes, she replied softly, and looked back at me. I had to take the initiative from then on to lead her to engage us to place any extra orders, such as drinks. Going through the menu I wanted to know the type of uni they were serving, and she smiled and replied, "Uni". I clarified that there's different types but seeing that she's not really getting it, suggested her to just ask the kitchen. She came back happily announcing, "Hokkaido".
It was amusing in the best terms. I highly doubt anyone would have done a worse job even on their first day of work. I don't ask for much, just a simple what would you like to drink or this is the menu or even just leaving the menu on the table and walk away. But she just stood there without a word. We had to initiate the exchange or it would be extremely awkward. Through the evening the only initiative she took as a staff was to ask us how we came to know about the restaurant. In fact she asked a total of three times. Geez... makes one wonder why they were so keen to know how their customers come to know about them (so they know which review platform was getting the traffic?), and, if that's the only thing they train her on her waitressing job. She was really polite, but was waiting for her customers to lead her in everything.
If the inadequate service was all there was that day, I could consider it an unlucky day with an awkward waitress. But service was not even the thing that had disappointed the most at Yakiniquest... the food was. The so-called premium wagyu were all in miniscule slices and portion, and they tasted bad as most were very poor cuts. I am not a big eater yet it was not enough to fill. Everything was pretty average - from starter to dessert, except the price. For the same price you could get a very good meal at many good restaurants.
It's been a few months since we were there yet I am still very disappointed by the very poor cost-performance we had from the restaurant, not to mention the amateurish service. It ruined a birthday celebration.
.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
WONDERFUL SERVICE FROM HIROSHI. Very good Omakase dining experience! Thank you. I had the 98 dollar menu and is it totally worth it! Mostly covered with A4 wagyu.
