Party of 3, we ordered a cold appetizer, two side dishes, and a main dish. As this is a Sichuan place, 3 of the dishes had to be spicy, otherwise there's no point in eating Sichuan cuisine. **Atmosphere:**The location of the restaurant itself is within an alley, fitting of its name. Connected to Main Street, however hiding away, which is unfortunate because it serves great food. The exterior of the restaurant is red, a bit modern, and oriental, compared to the other run-down stores in the same alley. The interior was very inviting, with oriental furniture, wood, and a fish tank that some very pretty parrot fish, which were colorfully red.**招牌黄伞肺片 Ox Tongue & Tripe w. Roasted Chili Peanuts, $16.95:**- This is a classic cold appetizer I get at Shanghai Cuisine Restaurants, however as usual it is highly priced to my disliking.- Small portion size for ~$17.- The first bite hit me with the mala immediately at the back of the throat, I immediately felt the heat.- Heat was not overpowering the flavor and managable with ice water.- Lots of umami and "ma" numbing heat, which I enjoyed.- Temperature was great for a cold app.- Was a little oversalted for my taste.- Tripe is tender, but the oxtongue was a little tough for my taste.- Overall it was good, but I wouldn't order again due to the price and nothing stood out.**成都冒鸭 1/2 Roasted Duck w. Chef's Special Sauce, $21.95 :**- Strong duck flavor, but not gamy- Nice aromatic smokiness from the spices- The meat was medium rare/still pink, so the meat was tender and juicy- Not spicy, which served as a balance for the other heated dishes- Overall pretty nice as an appetizer, definitely don't want to finish all of it though.**血旺肥肠 Pork Intestine w. Duck Blood in Spicy Sauce:**- Presentation is a little rough with the green/yellowish colors, but the flavor makes up for it.- Duck Blood was perfect, had just the right texture of tender, juicy, and a bit of springiness, not dry at all.- Intestines well cooked, tender, no gaminess, and went with the sauce well.- Sauce was excellent, with the heat, spice, and acidity from the pickled veggies.- For side toppings, pickled veggies were nice and sour, bamboo shoots had a nice crunchy contrast, and the enoki mushrooms provided an aromatic flavor, and clung the sauce well.- Garlic had a nice edge.- Eating one of the small chilis is dangerous.- Overall I thought this was the best dish ordered, flavor was unique and delicious, and the components were well done.**霸王沸腾鱼 Boiled Sliced Fish in Hot Chili Sauce:**- Presentation screams spicy and inviting.- Had a distinctly different flavor profile of the chili sauce from the previous spicy sauce, noticable by taste.- Broth didn't have any noticable fish umami.- The fish itself however, was fresh and flaky, and had a nice strong flavor.- For side toppings, lotus root and bean sprouts were crunchy, tofu skin had a nice bite and was able to cling onto the sauce.- Great to eat with rice, it soaks up the broth and oil for a better experience.- Too much oil for my liking, as I would have loved to drink the sauce but the amount of oil was too unhealthy to consume.- Overall the fish is excellent and the toppings provide nice texture and flavor, but the broth is lacking in fishy flavor and has excess oil.**Final Notes:**- Heat level was strong but not overpowering for all the dishes, was deliciously spicy.- Service was great, they gave us drinks when asked, and immediately gave me napkins when I asked for them twice, due to my nose running, and jokingly teased about the heat.- They have a cash discount, and a 15% discount if you post about them on Instagram or any other social media, which I gladly partook in.- Total cost of around $100, and party was full with some leftovers to take home. Well satisified.
