My wife and I passed up the room service breakfast for two at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis in order to enjoy an a la carte breakfast on the morning after we had experienced a first-class dinner in the hotel's luxurious Chez Philippe. Adjacent to the elegant lobby, the dining room simply oozes with tradition and opulence. For breakfast, my wife had Cinnamon Challah French Toast with maple syrup, fresh berries, bacon, a Bronx bagel with cream cheese and a cappucino. I had two scrambled eggs with sausage, breakfast potatoes, toast and a large glass of orange juice. Then we were off on the next leg of our trip to Florida. The night before, after being entertained by the five resident ducks, we enjoyed a sumptuous dinner. My wife started with a Wedge salad with iceberg lettuce, Bleu cheese dressing, crumbled bacon and heirloom tomato, then had a six-ounce filet mignon with mashed potatoes, asparagus and truffle sauce and finished with a delicious vanilla creme brulee. I opted for a bowl of lobster bisque and a Caesar salad with romaine, garlic croutons, parmesan cheese and Caesar dressing, a grilled ribeye of beef with mashed potatoes and asparagus and a large slice of pecan pie. The Peabody is advertised as "The South's Grandest Hotel." With its elegant surroundings, Chez Philippe could be advertised as "The South's Grandest Restaurant."
