Dear Hutong Management,It has been two months since I dined at your restaurant. I was holding off on writing a review but I felt compelled to do so after a sumptuous meal at Yue Jing Xuan at the Park Hyatt in Guangzhou. On October 15th I was visiting London and my girlfriend reserved a table for 2 at 6pm to celebrate my birthday. We arrived and opted to select the tasting menu with wine pairing. While the food was indeed delicious and the view phenomenal, I have never encountered such unprofessionalism from staff in ANY restaurant anywhere in the world, especially one that purports itself to exemplify such a high-class dining experience as Hu Tong.Your servers insisted on rushing us through every course, bringing the main courses while we hadn't even finished the appetizers, pouring us our second wine pairing after we had barely tasted the first, and the entire experience left us feeling like you just wanted to take our money and shoo us out the door. In fact, your servers even asked if they could combine the appetizer dishes into one plate to make room for the mains! I had expected service worthy of the name for such an extravagant tasting menu: instead, you degraded yourselves to a low-rate restaurant that's hard to find even in some of the worst Chinatowns in the US. There are two incidents in particular I would like you to note: after the first main course, my girlfriend went to the washroom. Your waiters and sommelier did not even have the courtesy to wait for her return and showed up table-side to give me their whole spiel and description of the next course along with the wine pairing, unceremoniously set it down, and walked away. I made a point to call them back to re-explain it to my girlfriend once she returned from the washroom as I was outraged by such behaviour. The last and final straw was when I got up to go the washroom, and our server approached my girlfriend to inform her at 8:15pm that we had overstayed our reservation time and that they had graciously added an extra 30 minutes to our seating time, at the cost to you of delaying the next guests who were waiting for their seating. I could not believe my ears when she relayed this to me... You already reached number one spot for "rudest and least professional" service in my book, but this was the cherry on top!Such service is truly disgraceful and unbecoming of an establishment trying to exemplify high-class dining at the Shard in London. If your rent is truly so high that you absolutely must enforce a 2h dining limit, perhaps you ought to consider raising your prices so you don't have to rush customers out and also consider hiring more professional staff. I will be sure to recommend to everyone I know to never waste their money at HuTong and suffer through the abuse of your pathetic staff members. My dinner last night in Guangzhou reminded me of what a high class chinese dining experience should be, and needless to say, HuTong falls well beneath that mark. My only regret is that I did not inform you of this sooner and I am sorry that several other customers will have endured the same treatment over the last several months. Judging by the reviews on Yelp and Google, we are not unique in having endured this at the hands of your staff. I have dined in fine Chinese establishments in Macau, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, London, and Toronto, and the experience at HuTong was a complete waste. For nearly £200 per person, we deserved much better. Though I doubt any decisive action will be taken as a result of this complaint, perhaps you will resolve to improve your professionalism and class for the year 2020. Sincerely,Mark Soberman (Reservation under Janet Feng, 6:00pm 15.10.2019)
