This unassuming Uptown storefront hides a regional Mexican food gem.
We made a reservation for a mid-week dinner. When we arrived a little before 7pm, we were only the second party in the place, though others trickled in after us until it was almost full. We were given a warm welcome and menus, including a page with the week's specials. Since we'd studied it online beforehand, we quizzed the waiter about his favorite dishes.
We first ordered a couple agua frescas which came in big Mason jar mugs. It's BYOB, so we spiked them with some rum we'd brought. Everyone else we noticed had brought bottles of wine or beer.
The waiter brought house made chips and a small dish of warm bean dip to munch while we waited, which was not long after we ordered.
Everything on the menu seemed so appealing, we had a hard time deciding. We began with a beet and apple salad which we shared. Then I had a Oaxacan tamale filled with shredded pork in a mild green mole sauce while my companion had warm mushrooms cooked in a plantain leaf. These appetizers were followed by a main dish of 2 juicy grilled quail in plum sauce with rice and refried beans for me and seafood soup for him. I was stuffed by this time but he made room for a small dessert of vanilla flan; it was very firm, almost like cheesecake, with a dark, burnt-sugar sauce (a smidge too dark for my taste)
Everything was made with care and quality ingredients, well seasoned, and attractively plated. We were very pleased with our choices and impressed with this little place. All that food, with tax, came out to $100 before tip.
The restaurant space is attractively decorated in a homey way. The tables are well-spaced apart. Service is friendly and competent. Street parking was plentiful and the Sheridan bus runs right past the place, so it's not hard to get there. In warmer months, there's a small patio out front on the wide sidewalk.
Very impressive! I'm so glad I learned about this place. We'll be back.
