London Stock Wandsworth Reviews from The Last Year
Worth the trip and the money
Went for a birthday celebration. Our usual dining preference is a definite cuisine with homestyle cooking and no pretension. Once a year or so we do a fine dining option. She is vegetarian, I am less fussy. I am a good home cook, she works in the restaurant trade and we are sympathetic to current difficulties. We didn’t need to be so here; OK so I usually blench at the sight of a man tweezering food and waitstaff that serves the first course with “Let’s start our journey”,; it often signals a night of pretension and not much else, but this was excellent cooking and service to back it up. There is a £65 four course menu and a £85 tasting menu incl a veg option. We had the 4 course. Yes the portions are small, its not quite the ‘bag of chips on the way home’ scenario but its not gluttony either and ‘langoustine’ is exactly what it says. One langoustine, £15 additional option, doubtless because of the dab of caviar on the top of it, but it was the most perfectly cooked specimen I have ever had. They don’t travel well and often past their best before they arrive at a kitchen. The brioche melted in the mouth, the risotto was al dente but not raw and the parmesan crisp on top of it had obviously taken a lot of work, a sea bream ceviche was seriously fresh and beautifully balanced. The monkfish delicate and moreish. The wine list is expensive but that’s how it is these days – deal with it. The (presumably) head chef with the tweezers had obviously put in a lot of hard work in prep before he picked them up. Watching the kitchen staff in the open kitchen you saw zero macho heroics and a lot of surefooted care. The room wasn’t full all night and so I cannot vouch for the noise level past that, but mercifully no-one had turned up a ‘curated’ playlist. Service was attentive without being obsequious; you don’t usually get a recommendation for a Ukrainian ‘shots bar’ at the post dinner chat – we will check it out on a less refined evening. Really enjoyed it, you would be hard pressed to find better at this style of cooking and certainly not at this price level. Definitely worth a visit. Damn fine stuff.
Real talent in the kitchen
Setup like a chef's table, you see the full action in the kitchen. No rush or crisis at all, surprisingly "in control" all the time. I liked the tasting menu a lot, and nice touch that the head chef comes and served himself a few dishes. Risotto is a masterpiece, so is the chocolate soufflé ! <-- don't leave without trying this.
Really lovely restaurant
Really good restaurant. Lovely atmosphere, great music and delicious food (especially the burrata and the tomato risotto) We ordered the 4 course meal which was brilliant, along with 2 bottles of wine. The sommelier was really passionate and interesting (and the wine excellent). The service was a little slow but as most of the tables were having tasting menus we were probably a thorn in the side of the chefs! Would definitely return ....
Badly thought out tasing menu
I was with a friend and we had the £85 8 course tasting menu, which for Mayfair is excellent value. However, it quickly became apparent that the value came from the ludicrously small portions. The main issue was that nothing had any sort of accompaniment. First up were 3 small slices of mackerel with a sauce. Then a langoustine with some sauce. Then a ballottine of quail (about 1 inch in diameter and height) with some sauce. By this point I was getting irritated. Where are the vegetables? Spoiler alert: not to come. Next up was a risotto which was again quite small but I think probably fairly sized given it was risotto. Then came a single small scallop with sauce, and the final savoury course was a piece of venison with a single piece of beetroot the size of your little finger (if you have average size hands). I should point out that service was very slow; we had been in the restaurant for 2.5 hours by this time and spent most of the time discussing how hungry we were. So disappointing to wait 15 minutes between courses to be given yet another canapé sized dish. To put it into perspective each course was about the size of a piece of sushi, but in an omakase restaurant you would be served closer to 20 courses, not 8. Weirdly the main pudding was at least twice the size of any of the savoury courses. It’s really a shame as everything tasted lovely. So whoever is doing the cooking is doing a great job at that, but whoever is coming up with the menu has no concept of how to provide guests with a great dining experience. Oh and you couldn’t even really ask for bread to fill you up as it was served as one of the 2 canapés. I should point out a well that I am very used to tasting menus as I have eaten at nearly all of London’s Michelin starred restaurants and many more around the world. I wasn’t expecting massive dishes you might serve as a starter, main and desert, but this was ridiculous.
Excellent good value High-end Modern food
A group of 4 had the tasting menu with wine pairings last Saturday. All the courses and wines were excellent! We especially enjoyed the Quail stuffed with duck liver, and the vegetarian stuffed courgette flower. The cherry tomato risotto was truly amazing! The staff were all attentive and helpful. Just to mention two minor points: the was no coordination between the somellier and the kitchen, so she was unaware that we had changed certain items. Also exactly the same wines were served for the vegetarian options as the meat options, which does not seem right. Finally the downstairs bathrooms were too dark. There should also be some more lighting by the front door, as it is hard to see, especially as there is a small step near the front door. Overall though, the food and wine pairings were excellent, and very good value - and we definitely plan to return.
Reasonably priced excellence
A genuine joy and pleasure. Food was surprisingly light but satisfying and delicious. . Chef brings you your main course and the staff are young and friendly. We had the pre-theatre menu which was a slimmed down version of the full tasting menu but it was superb. Highly recommend it for relaxed and unpretentious evening of culinarily excellence.
Delicious and debonair
We visited here for my birthday and were so impressed with this restaurant - classy and cool but very down to earth and welcoming. The ambience is set by the calm, industrious work behind the open kitchen, the friendly and welcoming staff and general air of zen. We opted for the tasting menu and wine flight which included a range of inventive and tasty dishes, from scallop to venison, burrata to a tangy foamy take on a tomato risotto. Just the right amount of detail from the chef and servers when presenting the food, well paired wines. Will certainly return for the 4 course dinner... though expect it will be hard to get a booking once word gets out about Stock's new location.
Superb !
What a great culinary experience in the heart of Mayfair. The flavours were exceptional, the ceviche and the pigeon were perfect, with incredible flavour. The service was also impeccable. Not to be missed !
Mayfair Perfection!
We had an absolutely fabulous meal at London Stock. We were group of 6 and all agreed that it was one of the best meals we have had in a long time. The staff were all very obliging and friendly. The atmosphere and ambience were both fantastic. We would highly recommend.
A small pearl a stone's throw from Regent Street
Excellent restaurant, in a modern, refined and informal style. Worthy of the Michelin guide recommendation in every way! Open kitchen... or rather directly in the dining room... you can snoop on the preparation of the dishes which is carried out in a professional, attentive manner and with silence and rigor on the part of the chef and his collaborators. All the dishes on the menu are fantastic both in terms of presentation and taste, perfect combinations, a symphony of flavours. Amazing desserts. Perfect timing in service and excellent staff in the room. For those who want very high level cuisine in a modern and informal environment but with a lot of taste, intimate and welcoming. Adequate but honest prices compared to the offer.
