Modena Washington Reviews from The Last Year
Soooooo good! My friend brought her toddler and was nervous
Soooooo good! My friend brought her toddler and was nervous at first because it's clearly upscale but they were so great and accommodating. They even made her a special off menu butter noodle bucatini with cheese that she loved. We had a big table and they got everything right. Service was amazing. I will be dreaming about the food (and drinks) for weeks to come I'm sure lol. Definitely made my lil graduation celebration feel extra special!

After traveling to the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, we were delighted to see a restaurant called Modena in DC. Perhaps we were incorrect in believing this restaurant would feature foods from the region, as our waiter welcomed us to a restaurant called "Moh-dayna" rather than Modena. We ordered gnocco fritto, a dish we loved when eating it at Hosteria Giusti or at Indegno (in Bologna). This was a very poor imitation of a gnocco fritto--ice cold fried dough absolutely laden with no flavor parmigiano. The Kraft green can has better flavor. They used and abused the culatello by covering it in some balsamic glaze. Not a legit aged balsamico, but something sickly sweet with zero acidity. The octopus with n'duja had no evidence of spicy sausage. Despite this, and a rubbery char, it was still the best dish of the night. The lamb bolognese tasted very much like Hamburger Helper, but with less salt and flavor. The pasta was drenched in sauce. Every bite was sodden with bland slop. The salad was oddly sweet (same balsamic as before). The complimentary bread was great but the olive oil was bland and slightly soured. Super disappointing meal and, at that price point it the whole thing felt like a real cheat!
I am an Italian food snob.
The pasta was amazing. Perfectly cooked, perfectly salted and delicious. My daughter and I were in DC for a 3 day visit. We LOVED Modena so much we ate there twice. I should add that we live in one of the food capitals of the US- New Orleans , LA. So we aren't impressed by meh. The first night we had the beet salad- it was unique with a modern flair. Savory yet fresh. A little bit of gastronomic science added a grin to this classic. Next I had the risotto with mushrooms - omg. Best risotto in years. Creamy, not sticky. Still to the tooth and the mushrooms had none of the sliminess that can happen with an inexperienced team. The risotto was so good I next tried - the egg yolk pasta with truffles. This well priced truffle dish renewed my faith in truffles. No icky fake truffle oil to be found. This was right on point. Much of the time that I get a truffled sauce in the us it is awful- chemical tasting and just wrong. This was divine. Rich, sweet, perfect. For desert we had the crème brûlée. They added a tiny scoop of sorbet for acid, an oil based cake crouton and something else I couldn't name. Sooooo good. To top it off service was friendly, fun, spoke italian and appreciative. A+++++ I dont review often but why isn't this placed PACKED????? Ps. I am a vegetarian- plenty of choices.
Service was impeccable! Food was fantastic! Waiter
Service was impeccable! Food was fantastic! Waiter accommodated teenagers desire for simpler pasta dish - spaghetti and meat sauce that wasn't even on the menu. Cod was fantastic as was the fusilli dish! Desserts were great too! Balsamic sorbet was a hit with the kids! Great to have them try something new!

Cocktails were well made! I got the seafood dish which was tasty! The ambience is enchanting! Great for a date night! The service was perfect! Tiramisu was delicious!
Came for dinner while in town.
The portion was small, everything was too salty including the bread. Service was mediocre and the waiter was impatient. Still, that's no excuse for the tiny portion and the bland tiramisu.. where's the mascarpone cheese?? I can't taste it at all. Disappointing.
Well, that was delicious.
After our planned dinner location turned out to be closed for a private event, we decided on Modena. Luckily, they had a space for us without a reservation. We got a cozy table, a fantastic server, and were well on our way to a delicious dinner. We decided to get the tasting menu and share everything. Our appetizer choices were the burrata and the fried artichoke, the entrees were the squid ink chitarra and risotto cacio pepe, and then we both got the butterscotch budino. The amuse bouches were fried calamari and arancini. These were exciting for two reasons - I hadn't realized we were getting amuse bouches and they were both fantastic! The fried calamari were like the epitome of what you want them to be and never are, and the arancini were delicious. And then there were the appetizers. I loved the fried artichoke. It was my first time trying the dish and it was delightful. The burrata was lovely - so creamy and light. The chitarra was a standout entree. It was so delicious. I wanted to fight my companion for it, but she is super nice so deserved to have some too. I also liked the risotto- it's just not as great as squid ink pasta. The only sad part is that they were out of the lamb and roasted carrot pasta, which sounded amazing. Guess I'll need to go back. And then there was dessert. If there is a butterscotch anything on the menu, I will get it. I'm glad I did. It was fantastic and I didn't want it to end. I can't wait to come back.

We booked dinner here for restaurant week but also our dear friend's birthday. We were seated in a private dining space near the door which allowed for some privacy and separation (the reason for the 3rd star!) Unfortunately our waiter provided lackluster service, they were away quite frequently leaving us to wait a bit longer to place orders and ask questions--which was OK at times but not really. Also, when we asked for more insight and breakdown of a few menu items, he was a bit flippant and mansplained things as if we were regulars and knew the menu intimately-- we were first timers and the presumptuous disposition was off putting the few times that it occurred. Half of the food items (not all pictured) were good and the others left much to be desired--almost completely due to lack of flavor, we had to often add salt and pepper to the dishes. On top of that, a few people ordered the same dishes and they all came out a bit differently lol. I don't know if that's normal but it was a surprise to us and unusual. The winners for the evening were the wood grilled octopus, the smoked hamachi crudo, and the Faller' Wheat Squid Ink Seafood Chitarra. I don't remember everything else that we ordered unfortunately :( All in all, we would probably return once more to try a few other items.
Tasty Italian food but disappointing cocktails.
We visited Modena on a Saturday night and the restaurant was mostly full. The restaurant is richly decorated and creates the feel of a fine dining experience without the dress code. We visited during restaurant week, so I ordered the fried artichokes, acquerello risotto, and warm Parmesan cake. Before dinner I ordered the Passione Liquida and had a sip of my wife's cherry pie cocktail. Neither drink was particularly satisfying and I wouldn't recommend either. Before our first course was served, we were brought warm bread and olive oil. The bread was as good as it gets. The fried artichokes were excellent with a great accompanying sauce. The risotto was rich and cheesy. The Parmesan cake was interesting to try and I think it was well executed, but it is not something I would order again. Overall, I had a good experience at Modena and would recommend them for food but not for drinks.
Pretty underwhelmed for a restaurant week experience.
The staff was pretty pushy time-wise wanting us to order quick even though we were one of two tables in the restaurant at the time. One party member had a couple allergies and there weren't many accommodations or willingness to help out. The octopus was a delicious appetizer and I really liked the lamb ragu pasta, but other friends at the table didn't enjoy their choices very much
