Poor House Bistro San Jose Reviews from The Last Year
Took my wife to brunch for Mother's Day 2024.
We arrived at approximately 10:30 AM and appeared to be one of the day's first customers. I was immediately disappointed that we had to order from a counter and serve ourselves. The menu was another issue, having eaten at many cajun and creole restaurants, we expected a more authentic cajun/creole brunch menu. Instead, the menu consisted mostly of standard breakfast fare that you can get from almost any diner, for half the price. Everything on the menu was overpriced well above offerings at other restaurants, that actually serve at your table. The quality of the food is yet another issue. Both of our entrees came with potatoes which were undercooked. My wife ordered a Mimosa at the cost of $12, which is an outrageous price anywhere, not to mention the fact that it was served in a tiny plastic disposable cup. To add insult to injury it was the worst Mimosa she ever had. Either the quality of the champagne or the orange juice or both was very poor but the taste was dreadful. For a $73 brunch, I expected I much more authentic experience, better service, and much better food.
Poor House has great food and live music.
So glad they were able to stay open during Covid and move to a new location. The new location is great.

I live in the Evergreen area of San Jose and from calling in my delivery to it being at my doorstep was a mere 40 minutes. Everything was still toasty warm and the food was excellent.
The new location was underwhelming.
I know the old location was temporary but it felt quaint and helped the music acoustics. Food got cold fast being outside too
Nice Sunday afternoon on the patio with great live music.
Spit out to the breaux show band you got to check them out. The food was great we had the muffuletta, beignets, and red beans and rice. All the food was great. Never been to New Orleans but heard from others it was the best they had outside of the. The only knock is the servers didn't come around to check on us much other than to pass the tip jar around for the band but whatever. It was still a great time and will be back again soon. Check them out!

Our family of 7 enjoyed our visit there Friday evening, though we were disappointed in the food. First, we did not know there was no table service and that we would have to place our order and pick it from up in the kitchen. No one was totally satisfied with their meal, but two of us were especially disappointed in the jambalaya. It was rather bland, and my order consisted of just a very small bowl each of gumbo, jambalaya and red beans and rice served with a cold, dry piece of corn bread for $24. Several were disappointed in their sandwiches, which they said were also bland. We did enjoy the casual outdoor setting and the music though.

F A N T A S T I C! Great vibe - excellent service = (thanks Kennedy and staff), and delicious food! Friendly, engaging patrons = We were in San Jose to see the Sharks vs the Kraken. Even wearing opposing team jerseys, we were welcomed and treated like friends. We opted to dine in their heated outdoor patio area. What a delightful option especially since we don't experience this amazing weather where we reside! The food was delicious and plentiful! Mr. Wonderful had the catfish Po'Boy and it was massive. I had a house salad and a cup of red beans and rice - the servings, also generous. *John - Thanks for recommending The Poor House Bistro! You were 100% spot on! We'll definitely be back. Congratulations Sharks!
We use to go a lot at the old location.
We even donated and went to fundraisers- like raise the roof and helping Ron Thompson. The food was good and the music was wonderful. But, on our last visit we couldn't find a place to park so we didn't stay. There is no email address on their website to ask questions and there is no parking information either. Sad, making it difficult to go to one of our favorite hangouts. Even the temporary location we visited many times.
Poor house is a great venue great food perfect place to go

We came here for a Sunday brunch and we were thrilled that they also had their regular menu items because as someone who doesn't like to eat eggs for breakfast, there were a lotta egg dishes on the brunch menu. I ended up getting the bowl of gumbo and fried catfish, and my partner got the fried chicken and waffles. The best thing on the table was the fried chicken which was seasoned well but only came with one piece of breast, normally this kind of dish comes with a few pieces of chicken so we found that odd. The waffle was more savory than sweet even with all the syrup. The catfish batter was good but could tell the fish was under seasoned and not freshly fried, and my gumbo was okay I've definitely had better! All of this food plus drinks cost us $80 which is steep for the low quality of food we received. The service was okay, we were confused about what to do upon entering the restaurant and wasn't too sure if we were to wait to be seated. Eventually if you just walk further to the back there's a cash register which is where you order your food and also where you pick it up when it's ready. This set up makes me wonder what they have waiters for if I'm doing all the work. The outdoor area was nice, the game was playing so we were able to watch that for a little bit but otherwise the seating was kinda scattered all over the place and not very cohesive. It was definitely giving poor house vibes! If you're passing through the area and looking for good food, do NOT stop by here, it's not worth the money spent.
Glad to be back and see its new location.
Lots of space. Good food. Had a shrimp po boy and fried cajun chicken sandwich. Both were good but needed to be spicier. Beignets were awesome as always. Service was lovely. Will come back on a live music night as it was quiet for a sunday. Come support them!!!

The clam chowder was amazing and the chicken wings were delicious . Went on a coldish day but the outdoor heaters were great at keeping us comfortable. Great food. Great ambience and service was great as well.
A thrill to have one of my favorite places open again !
Wow! Just so happy that Poor House is back and serving the fantastic food that they are known for! I can’t stress enough how much I enjoyed eating the Poor House Po Boy again, it was just as I had remembered from before their move. The location is next door to the Hi Life BBQ restaurant and as close to the Shark Tank as before. Parking can be a challenge especially when local events are held but the food is always worth it. Congrats to Jay and team for getting such a huge enterprise accomplished and meeting the high bar they set previously. I was recognized by one of the kitchen staff which made me feel so welcome and happy to be there. Just check the schedule before heading over to get your grub on, all the best !
