Inventive, Beautiful, but Most Importantly Delicious
We were lucky to score a last minute reservation here and our meal was outstanding. Delicious, creative, and beautiful. We were celebrating my husband’s birthday and this meal was special. The Service was impeccable. The staff were charming and knowledgeable. The chef stopped by to check on us which was special. My husband has gluten and dairy allergies that were handled with great finesse as only minor changes were needed. The wine pairings were thoughtful and accentuated the food. The lamb course was astounding. I’d no idea lamb could be that tender. I loved the inventiveness of the meal as well. They currently have two Michelin stars but I would not be surprised to hear they had earned a third. If you’re planning to be in Ghent definitely give it a try.
Good food, service and room need work
Delicious food, especially the amuse bouche and first few courses. Service was friendly but we felt rushed. Vegetarian course is same price as meat menu, but did not feel like comparative value. Front room is pretty art nuveau, back room is boring

We have been abandoning high-level gastronomic restaurants for a couple of years now, as you can see from our previous review reports, due to high prices and self-absorbed attitudes. This lunch was a present from our children, so we had no other choice. We were impressed by the service, the delicious food and the excellent wine. Still expensive though ...
This is a place where everything is organize to intensify
This is a place where everything is organize to intensify your experience. BEAUTIFUL SPACE The space is a long series of small aristocratic halls, with marble fireplaces with mirrors on top. The contention in the furniture and the warm intimate lighting make it friendly and cost. EXTRAORDINARY FOOD Soy, chimichurri, vinegar, lemon, basil, 5 spices, salt, this place is a celebration of accuracy in the use and combination of flavors. This is clearly staged in the food, without ever saying it with words. The first aperture is just a tiny ball that melts in your mouth liberating two difficult to combine flavors -the saltiness of soy, with the acidity of a vinaigrette. Their dialogue becomes the entire course. Nothing else is needed, and it is amazing. But then it all starts, as a journey, that takes you to the spectrum of food today. The lamb, the squid or the fennel dessert are just formidable. Adding to this, the service is impecable. The chef is personally taking care of each customer, and that makes the team be happily engaging with everyone in both a respectful and elegant way, and warm. Close to perfection. Don't miss this one.
Must visit for vegetarian foodies!
Sublime completely encompasses our experience. A pleasant decor, extremely friendly staff who have a leisurely chat, surprising flavors in the various dishes. Really great. We opted for the 7 course vegetable menu and were delighted. Personally, I'm not a fan of desserts that don't involve chocolate. These are usually eaten with great pleasure by my other half, but this time he was still hungry. The flavors were excellent and, together with the wine, a delight for the taste buds :-) At the end of the lunch, Mr. Vrijmoed also made time for a chat, which could be called the proverbial icing on the cake. Where is that third star?? Hello Michelin??
Absolute top in Belgium
We have visited this place several times, and not once has it been anything less. In my opinion, this is one of the better restaurants in Belgium for price/quality. Absolute top; with a special mention for the vegetarian menu.
Top restaurant for gourmets
I'm running out of superlatives for this breathtaking gastronomic adventure. We had the vegetarian 7-course menu and this was truly the best plant-based cooking event we have ever experienced. The service was friendly, even cordial and fortunately not too stiff. There was not a single dish that you could say was a little less, on the contrary, every amuse and dish continued to amaze us and even blow us away. The tableware was rather ordinary, but perhaps this was a conscious choice. For me this was the only difference between a two and a three star restaurant. The pace of serving the various dishes was strict and perfectly timed, simply wonderful. An absolute must visit for vegetarian foodies!

After having tried several times to reserve a table at Vrijmoed, where we always came across a fully booked agenda, we finally succeeded this week in booking a five-course menu. What an experience! Perfection from entering to leaving; Anyone who wants to test the difference between a two-star and a one-star restaurant will find an answer at Vrijmoed. It is just not clear what else Michael and his team can do to achieve a third star. Or perhaps, provide an elevator instead of the steep basement stairs to the toilets. Every dish was a Wow experience for us and our table companions. Incredible flavor combinations, but always without any hint of artificial flavor boosters: only authentic, extremely fine and refined flavors. You should try bringing a dessert based on spinach... and amaze the entire table with it. We should also highlight the choice of wines, a real "pairing" as we rarely encountered. Especially the slightly sweet Moselle Spätläse with dessert could not have been better. And kudos to the sommelier who really explains everything in detail about the wines, the wineries, varietals and their percentages, aging, aging and comparison with neighboring domains. Also the perfect service by extremely friendly and warm people who were everywhere, but without us noticing. How fortunate we are to live in this culinary country and grateful that such addresses allow us to enjoy the highest gastronomic pleasures. Thanks Michael!
Best experience in recent years
We went there hoping to have a special experience. Well, the restaurant completely delivered on that promise. We are very impressed by the friendliness and stylish welcome, by the charm of the building, and by the time the chef took to have a short chat afterwards. But most of all we were enthusiastic about what was conjured up on the plate, from the starters to the desserts. We really couldn't find a less moment in it. Taste and appearance: it was all perfect. Add to this a very successful choice of food and wine pairing, and we can say that we have undoubtedly had one of the best experiences in recent years. It costs a few cents, but you really get something in return that is more than worth it. Date of visit: February 2024

It's worth a special trip to Ghent just for this restaurant. We've been to this restaurant more than 50 times. The wonder never ceases to amaze us. Dishes are not like the other star restaurants with a whole bunch of things thrown together to look pretty. The difference here is the taste. Balance, savory with acidity, in delicious harmony. It's open only four days a week. Truly a class act. The chef is in the kitchen himself not like some other famous chefs with so many restaurants that are more like a brand. This time, the marinated cod with foie gras, calviar, salmon eggs, beetroot was beautifully presented and simply delicious. The ox tail with truffle marvelled at the best classic french cooking. The dessert was light and heavenly. What a delight!
Review Vrijmoed in Ghent
The experience at Restaurant Vrijmoed was extraordinary. From the excellent food to the refined service, everything was of an exceptional standard. Upon arrival we were spoiled with delicious appetizers and an extensive selection of aperitifs. When choosing the menus, from the Vrijmoed menu to the vegetarian menu, the preferences of each guest were effortlessly taken into account, including supplements. The food was phenomenal, especially the salt-crusted celeriac was probably the best I have ever tasted. The wines paired perfectly with both menus and at times the difference between food and wine was almost indistinguishable due to the excellent combination. The sommelier was very knowledgeable and shared his knowledge with great enthusiasm. The service was attentive; For example, I never had to open the door to the toilet myself. The staff were professional when necessary and created a relaxed atmosphere at the table. In short, the food was superb and the service was excellent. Even the chef personally came by at the end to listen to our experience. Definitely worth the two Michelin stars!

Vrijmoed has 2 stars and are those 2 stars really worth it. Every course was a feast for the eyes and a delight for the tongue.
Very nice address, in the heart of a very beautiful city
Lunch on the occasion of my birthday. And discovery of a very beautiful address. High level of quality and precision. From homemade gin for an aperitif, to sweet treats with coffee... More than the taste or the associations, I was impressed above all by the technical mastery and the level of execution. Special mention for the Scheldt lobster (on the menu that day, magnificent). Very efficient and warm service, pleasant atmosphere (beautiful decor, open kitchen, friendly chef). Second special mention for the sommelier, who managed to surprise us with the majority of the wines (magnificent quality and pairings). A very nice souvenir.
An unforgettable dinner.
Second time that we Rest. Visit Vrijmoed, we think it is a fantastic restaurant. We enjoyed it 100%. The reception, service, everything went down to the last detail. We thought the food was fantastic and will definitely visit Mr Vrijmoed and his team again. Have also purchased the new cookbook. Highly recommended. Plain and simple. Congratulations Mr Friday.
Perfection at Vrijmoed.
An exceptional vegetarian experience, where the chef managed to surprise us with a meat-free menu. It was a truly extraordinary experience, especially since this restaurant is located in Flanders. Every aspect of the meal reflects Flemish culture: the organization, the attention to detail, the exquisite flavors, and a deep respect for cooking. The chef's signature dish, made with mushrooms and tomatoes, was the highlight of our meal, a true celebration of indulgence. The chef welcomed us with great distinction and sincere respect. The atmosphere in the room was simply perfect, the choice of wines was sensational, and I would like to emphasize again, the atmosphere at Vrijmoed is impeccable. I really hope that this chef continues to be talked about, because what he offers in his restaurant is simply exceptional.
Great seven course meal
Vrijmoed has two Michelin stars, and it's as good as most of he three-star restaurants I've had the pleasure to visit. The dishes are small but have great mouth feel and are exquisite in flavour. Two of us had the seven-course menu, the third had the vegetarian option. We began our meal at 7:30 and left just after midnight, feeling totally satisfied. Check the menu and see if you're willing to pay the high prices.
