😒 3/5 - Good - Not Great - And Overpriced

This restaurant is good -- not superb -- and way overpriced for what it is. A friend and I went recently for dinner, and we both ordered the 3-course tasting meal and accompanying wine pairings. I had the pork ragu and pappardelle pasta, the rockfish, and the carrot cake. The first two dishes were good, though not especially memorable, but I found the dessert to be overly sweet and rich, with much of the carrot flavor being overpowered. I will say the food portions were generous. The wines were very good, particularly the Domaine Huet (from Vouvray), which is one of the best wineries in the Loire Valley. The quantity of wine served for each pairing, however, was the smallest I've ever seen in a restaurant (and I'm accounting for the fact that this was a tasting menu, where typically you wouldn't be served a full glass.)
The decor was OK. It seemed overly dark in some areas, overly bright in others. Also, a bit of a weird mix of textures and materials -- lots of stainless steel, the copper oven, white tiles, industrial concrete, the dark wood tables and chairs. Didn't quite seem to jive or be coherent.
Service was uneven. Waitstaff were friendly and attentive but at times amateurish. At one point they cleared my dining partner's finished plate before I had finished that course. During another course the waiter said something to the effect of "are we almost ready for the next course?" while I was still working on my food, making me feel rushed. For the first wine pairing they brought a Rioja, not the Pinot Noir, as specified on the menu. At another point, the waiter came by to ask how a course was when we were both actively chewing, awkwardly forcing us to hurry up with our mastication just to reassure him how delicious it was! Etc., etc.
I realize that some of the above may sound like petty complaints, but the bill (for my meal alone) was around 133 dollars (including tax and tip). I have had more satisfying meals in DC in the last few months for half that total. When you spend that much at a restaurant you are expecting a certain level of excellence, and I have to say I did not experience that at Shilling Canning Company.
