We have happy memories of the Idle Rocks, which has long been one of our favourite hotels and on our last visit we enjoyed the most delicious and exciting food, so we chose it for my birthday weekend. We had a package deal, which included 3 nights accommodation , an a la carte dinner at the St Mawe's Hotel, an a la carte dinner at the Idle Rocks and a tasting menu at the Idle Rocks. Our double room was excellent, with a spacious and well-equipped bathroom, fully up to the standards of the "Relais and Chateau" chain to which this hotel belongs. The staff, who were mostly young, were uniformly helpful and pleasant; any request was met with alacrity and charm. Sadly, the food, which had been one of our main reasons for choosing this hotel, failed to live up to expectations. At the St Mawe's Hotel, we had one good meal (Korean Cauliflower with nicely-cooked Cauliflower and a zingy sauce and a good Pork dish) and one bad (Fried Chicken which had been cooked in Oil at too low a temperature and was consequently soggy (and barely lukewarm) and a distinctly pedestrian Fish Pie). We were hoping that the Idle Rocks would restore our faith in the cuisine, but it was not to be. On Saturday night, when we had our 3-course meal, the dining room was absolutely full, which meant upwards of 50 covers. There were 6 waiting staff, and a wine waiter, who should have been able to cope with this number and it was not their fault that they did not. They were as charming and helpful as ever but uncoordinated. A dining room of this size requires a Maître d' or someone to direct and control the service and maintain a watching brief and this was lacking. As a result, our 3-course meal was served by four different waiters (not including the wine waiter, who made a single brief appearance) and we had an hour-long gap between the main course and the dessert. The tasting menu on our last evening was frankly disappointing. An amuse-bouche was nondescript; there is no point in having an amuse-bouche unless it sets the taste buds dancing. Tagliatelle could have done with a couple more passes through the machine. Consequently, it was thick and almost chewy. It had also been over-enthusiastically dressed with Truffle Oil. This was doubly unfortunate as the previous dish in the menu had also featured Truffle Oil to an unsubtle extent. To have two consecutive dishes on a tasting menu dominated by the same ingredient is not good planning. A Duck disk was superb, but by this time it was too late to save the day. The food here is not cheap (you wouldn't expect it to be) and at these prices one tends to be unforgiving. Will I go back? Sadly, I doubt it.
